The Rangers and Mariners close out a four game series in Seattle on Thursday. These long time rivals are on opposite sides of the AL West standings this year as Texas is just 23-34 and 12.5 games out first place. The Mariners are exceeding expectations and are currently 33-21 and just one game out of the first place lead of the Houston Astros. The loss of Robinson Cano only has the Mariners playing better. The Mariners won the first game of the series, 2-1 on Monday, but the Rangers responded with a 9-5 win on Tuesday behind a big three run double by Roughned Odor. These are big games for the Mariners as they try and keep touch with the Astros who are destined to go on a big run sometime this summer.

Golden State Warriors (58-24, 29-12 Home) at Cleveland Cavaliers (50-32, 21-20 Away), Game 1, Series tied 0-0
After what can only be deciphered as an inconsistent postseason all around, we’re ready to kick off the NBA Finals out west. The fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, champions of the Eastern Conference, are on the road to face the second-seeded Golden State Warriors, champs of the West, in Game 1 on Thursday night. Cleveland advanced by winning an ugly Game 7 87-79 on the road in Boston Sunday night. Golden State erased a double-digit deficit for the second straight game as they knocked off Houston 111-102 on the road in Game 7 Monday night. The Warriors own a 59-52 edge in the all-time regular season series and have won three straight meetings, including both this season. In the playoffs, the Warriors have won two of the three previous series between the teams and hold an 11-7 edge in head to head playoff wins.

Colorado Rockies (30-25, 11-12 Home) at San Francisco Giants (25-30, 11-20 Away)
The Colorado Rockies are atop the division and while they have Jon Gray on the mound for this one (he has struggled), we also note that the Giants will be sending out Derek Holland and he has gone just 2-6 with a 4.73 ERA on the year, including 1-4 with a 4.09 ERA on the road. The Rockies have struggled at home and on offense, but that offense may be coming around and this team usually always hits well at him. They should have a field day against Holland in the one. As I stated, Gray has struggled this year, but he is taking on an offense that has averaged just 3.23 rpg on the road. He will not shut them down completely, but enough to get the win.

Vegas Golden Knight (63-26-5-3) at Washington Capitals (61-31-8-1), Game 2, VGK leads 1-0
Although being outshot 34-28 by the Golden Knights, the Capitals still had plenty of chances to grind out a positive result in Game 1 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. Two separate leads and a golden chance to tie the game with seconds remaining? Not bad against a team, which has lost just one of its last 17 home outings against sides with a winning road record. Still, Washington’s best bet to grab a win away in Vegas was always going to be in Game 1. With the Knights now aware of how aggressive the Caps are approaching the Final and, most definitely, expecting them to step up a gear in the following fixture, it is very unlikely the hosts will drop their own urgency levels. Truth be told, the Knights are quite likely to play even better in Game 2.

Two of the top teams in the American League should provide plenty of excitement for the fans. Morton has really rejuvenated his career over the last season or two with the Astros as he had floundered in previous seasons after leaving Atlanta. He’s striking out guys at a much higher clip than in his early years and one has to wonder what is the root cause of that. Sabathia started the season strong but has struggled of late and was roughed up by a bad Texas team in his last start, failing to get out of the fifth inning. Look for the Astros to take advantage of his struggles and pick up the win in this contest.

Houston Rockets (65-17, 34-7 Home) at Golden State Warriors (58-24, 29-12 Away), Game 7, Series tied 3-3
So much of this contest is going to come down to how Houston responds after getting destroyed in the second half of Game 6. They seemed to have the Warriors on the ropes in the opening quarter as they were bombing away from the perimeter and making like miserable. Unfortunately, Houston completely fell apart after the opening quarter as they were doomed by terrible turnovers like backcourt violations, passes that went way out of bounds, losing control of their dribble and offensive fouls. If Paul can even go, he’s going to be limited. The Warriors have been here before while the Rockets haven’t: that might be the difference as Golden State gets the upper hand.

The Capitals are yet to win a competitive game against the Golden Knights, being shut out in Las Vegas with a score of 3-0 in December before losing 4-3 in Washington some six weeks later. Ovechkin & Co., though, have been in deadly form lately, posting two consecutive shutouts in their very last two fixtures, while also impressing on the road like no other team during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Caps have gone 8-2 away from home this postseason and have notched 13 road victories in their last 16 travels to see off teams with a home winning percentage above the .600 mark. As good as the Knights have been on own ice lately (15 wins in the last 16 meetings versus sides with a winning road record), the confidence and determination Washington has at the moment, fueled by Alex Ovechkin’s more than apparent drive to get his hands on his first Stanley Cup, will definitely be a problem for the hosts in Game 1.

Boston has the upper hand in this series but the problem they’ve had is finding a way to win on the road in the playoffs. Five of the Celtics’ six road losses in the playoffs have come by double figures: only a 104-102 defeat in Game 4 of the opening round to the Bucks was closer than 11 points. That’s part of being a young team but it is rather strange given that the Celtics led the East and were third in the league with 28 road wins. Cleveland knows that their backs are against the wall and James tends to deliver in these situations: look for him to carry the Cavaliers one more time to send this one back to Boston for Game 7.

While the Angels are still in the thick of the AL West race, one has to wonder how long they can hang in given the questionable rotation they have. Heaney is a prime example: he has a decent enough ERA at 3.35 but he has caught a break as six of the 21 runs he’s allowed are unearned. Even with his numbers being what they are, he’s no match for Severino, who has been mowing down hitters left and right: his ERA is actually four-tenths of a run HIGHER than his FIP ERA projects for this point of the season based on his numbers. In a game with plenty of power, it’s Severino’s arm that is the difference as the Yankees prevail.

After three days off following that contest, they were blown out in Game 3 before bouncing back with their gritty showing in Game 4. There’s no extended layoff here so that’s something that seems to work in Houston’s favor. The Rockets have momentum as they showed they can grind Golden State to a halt with their defense. Both teams really shortened their rotations in Game 4 and it will be interesting to see how that effects players going forward. Playing at home with the momentum of the fourth quarter in their pockets, Houston finds a way to win here and take a 3-2 series edge.

After a poor league finish, for their lofty standards, and despite looking a bit long in the tooth at times this season, Real Madrid have still managed to claw their way to a third straight final and a fourth in the last five years. Their opponents Liverpool, on the other hand, have not been in this competition all that much, only taking part in it twice since 2009/10. Those are huge numbers to suggest that Madrid are favorites. But they shouldn't be by much. Liverpool have the attack to give any team a major headache, and goals should rain down freely in this match. The team that scores first, due to both having an impressive counter attack, should end up on top. Madrid just to edge it for history.
