Houston beat Minnesota in five games in the first round and dispatched Utah in five in the conference semifinals as they took a 112-102 win at home Tuesday night. The Rockets own a 121-92 edge in regular season wins and took two of three this season, including a 116-108 home win in the last matchup January 20. In the postseason, Golden State has won both previous series and holds an 8-2 edge in head to head playoff wins.

Winnipeg Jets (61-23-9-2) at Vegas Golden Knights (59-26-5-3), Game 2, Winnipeg leads 1-0

     The Winnipeg Jets really started out fast in game one, but after scoring three goals in the first 7:35 of the game, they were able to pot just one more goal the rest of the way. The Golden Knights really settled in after the fast start by the Jets and I will look for Vegas to continue that solid play in this one. They have been a very solid road team this year and will not get caught off guard in this one. Winnipeg has played a few more games than the Golden Knights and they must be getting a bit tired by now.

     It’s the start of the Eastern Conference Finals up in Beantown and it’s a rematch of last year’s conference finals. The fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers are on the road as they square off with the second-seeded Boston Celtics Sunday afternoon. Cleveland reached the conference finals after eliminating fifth-seeded Indiana in seven games in the opening round before sweeping top-seeded Toronto in the conference semifinals. Boston advanced with a seven game win over seventh-seeded Milwaukee in the opening round before dispatching third-seeded Philadelphia in five games in the semifinals. The Celtics lead the all-time regular season series 125-80 but the Cavaliers took two of three this season, including a 121-99 win here in the last matchup on February 11. In the postseason, Boston has won four of the seven series but Cleveland has a 20-19 edge in head to head wins. The Cavaliers took the last series between the teams, winning the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals four games to one.

Tampa Bay Lightning (62-25-5) at Washington Capitals (57-28-9), Game 1, Series tied 0-0

It’s on to the Eastern Conference Finals and we will see the 2nd seeded Washington Capitals invade Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida to battle it out with the top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in game one of their best-of-seven series. The Capitals took out the Penguins in six games to get here, while the Lightning advanced by beating the Bruins in five. The Lightning took two of the three games between these teams in the regular season this year. Goalie Probables: Getting the nod for the Capitals will be Braden Holtby (8-3, 2.04 GAA) and the Lightning will counter with Andrei Vasilevskiy (8-2, 2.20 GAA). games here in Pittsburgh. Miami Marlins (13-23, 7-11 Home) at Atlanta Braves (21-14, 13-7 Away)

     While the Braves have won six of their last seven games facing the Marlins with Foltynewicz on the hill they have lost 13 of his last 16 starts overall and seven of his last eight road starts. Those last two trends will continue facing Smith, who has been lights out in his last two starts. He will tame the Atlanta bats and lead the Marlins to a win in the first game of this division series snapping the Braves seven-game road winning streak.

     After three shut-out victories against the World Championship outsiders, Russia’s task gets tougher on Thursday when it faces the Czech Republic. Next season’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk head coach runs the rule over that game, while Belarus continues to struggle despite switching its staff mid-tournament. Russia has filled three more slots on its roster – and won’t be inviting any more players from the NHL to this year’s tournament. SKA forward Nikita Gusev proved his fitness in today’s practice and joins Ilya Vorobyov’s team, while CSKA goalie Ilya Sorokin and Nikita Soshnikov (St. Louis) also take their place on the team.

Boston Celtics (55-27, 27-14 Home) at Philadelphia 76ers (52-30, 22-19 Away), Game 5, Celtics leads 3-1

     Philadelphia gave themselves life by grinding Boston’s offense to a halt in Game 4, setting them up for another win or go home situation here in Game 5. The 76ers made a shrewd move by going with McConnell, who was sharp in Game 3 as well while Simmons struggled: he went nine of 12 from the floor in Game 4 and made life tough for Boston’s guards. The 76ers have to get more from their key contributors like Redick, Covington and Belinelli while improving their perimeter shooting. Boston has grit and tenacity but the 76ers aren’t going quietly into that good night. Look for Philadelphia to scratch and claw out a win to force a Game 6.

    The standout match on the schedule for Tuesday has to be the one between third seed Grigor Dimitrov and Milos Raonic, who will face off in round two. It will be the fifth match at main tour level between the former Wimbledon finalists with Dimitrov leading the head to head 3-1. It will be the first time on clay though, a surface that would tend to favour the Bulgarian. After a knee injury caused him to give a walkover in Monte Carlo, there didn’t appear to be any issues for Raonic in his opening round win against Nicolas Kicker. He served 17 aces in a strong performance, coming out on top 6-3 6-2. The second set was especially impressive for Raonic, dropping just 1 point across his four service games. It bodes well for this match although Dimitrov is sure to provide a much sterner test on return.

Cleveland Cavaliers (50-32, 29-12 Home) at Toronto Raptors (59-23, 25-16 Away), Game 4, Cavaliers leads 3-0

     Cleveland has to consider itself fortunate after winning Game 3 after blowing that 14 point lead entering the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers could easily be down 2-1 in this series but relied on James making the clutch buckets when the team needed them the most. Toronto is going to need DeRozan to step up and play better as he was a complete non-factor after a couple of early fouls in Game 3. The Raptors are now in a situation that 129 other NBA teams have been in: down 3-0 in the postseason. None of those teams went on to win four straight and the series. Toronto picks up one win though, pushing the series back north of the border for Game 5.

Pittsburgh Penguins (47-29-6) at Washington Capitals (49-26-7), Game 6, Capitals leads 3-2

This series really has the feeling of going the distance. The Caps took a 3-2 series lead with a 6-3 win in game five, but it wasn’t easy as the game was tied with 15 minutes to go before the Caps scored three goals late to grab the win. The Penguins have been a very good home team this year and while the caps have played well on the road in the postseason, they did struggle away from home during the regular season and they are just 4-9 in their last 13 games here in Pittsburgh.     If this year's El Clasico feels a little anti-climatic, that's because it is. At this stage, the match itself is not for much in the context of the league.
