Mine ON!!!
And they were very nice. The caveat is that padrinogtr needs to be able to understand it well enough to explain it. I think this will be a useful exercise for everyone else to understand and make for a fool proof method of explanation for future newbies.

I was looking for a way to pass the hash (not to be confused with hashish). Padrinogtr was having a hard time understanding it and it is quite the hot topic, so it was a good opportunity. That would have been 2 blocks under the contest if there were a winner. If it goes too long and I lose interest it would be a shame, but I would find another way to help the smaller guys out for fun.
Just figured I'd check if it's applicable to submit another way of explaining it that I believe Padrinogtr will understand and be able to explain...

Is that allowed?  Huh

bring it on!!!

Whatever it takes. At this rate, I may just open it to anyone, but if they are over 20 TH/s I'll just reduce the reward to 25 TH/s. It may or may not be enough incentive to get the creative minds cooking.
I don't see why not, hash is hash and it would definitely open it up to more creative suggestions.

One suggestion; it's easy to get caught up in the full explanation of mining with the scenarios, but really we're only after the explanation of how the 5Nd works as that seems to be the hangup.
Maybe just stick to the difficulty and shares. I was wondering if it would be easier to compare an actual screenshot of shifts with some graphics or very simple explanation with the pictures at least.

Remember the goal is to explain it and have padrinogtr 's lightbulb go off to where he could explain it to other members with his own example. If this is just impossible to do (which I don't believe it is) then I'll get creative another way with the hash.

If yer looking to win the contest he has said he learns best with a visual representation.

I don't really care much about the contest. But I did make some rudimentary drawings a page or two back.

I just cant imagine making it any easier than what I have previously written/drawn. Mining isn't a hobby for children. Nor for idiots trying to get rich quick without taking more than 10 seconds to understand what they're doing.

...anyway

Come on green blocks!

Once you've ramped up, your reward 'matches' your hash rate when the block is found, since that is (expected to be) your hash rate for the last 5Nd also.
The variance the 5Nd deals with is during changing hash rates.

If you have the same hash rate (forever) then the 5Nd makes no difference to you after you've ramped up, until you ramp down.

Kano's post above is why the 5nd ramp up is a non-issue for me. 5nd reduces pool variance. For miners this is helpful to not miss rewards if you need to do miner maintenance or have power/internet outages.

Well something is going on at my house. All of my miners quit showing up at the pool at the same time. Im stuck here at work so I cant even check to see whats going on. Now im going to lose a day of mining.  Angry. I must have either lost internet or power. This sucks.

The good news is that because of the 5ND, you won't lose much rewards.

Likely your internet went out, or you could've lost power.

This is why I love this pool right here. My internet went down all day. I just finally got things back up and running. In the meantime we find a block and since I was fully ramped up. I got basically my normally payout. Never would have happened anywhere else. We've had a rough go at it lately with blocks. Go figure my internet goes down and we find one. I'm pumped.

It's for reasons such as this when 5Nd really comes in handy Grin

Good to see a 24.5% block!  We needed that! Cheesy

you should look into "ausome miner" properly configured u can manage your miners from anywhere. wont help if yer house burned down or the wife ran off with your miners.

Lol if my wife runs off with anything it won’t be my miners. In fact those would probably the only thing left. I found out our internet is out. There is a line down and the service provider is trying to get it back up. Guess I have to wait.

East Coast? we're getting crazy winds today...

No Just some freak incident here with a down line.

- All else being equal, on a long enough time scale, the ONLY thing that makes one pool pay more than others is a lower pool fee.
...
Yes, but the "All else being equal" also includes pool hash rate to some extent.
If the pool gets too small - as I've been trying to avoid over the last couple of months and will hopefully have some more hash rate here soon again - the diff changes also can affect your reward dramatically.

This is why I mention on occasion "as long as we are expected to find a number of blocks each diff change"
The issue is that if you're mining for multiple diff changes per block, then your reward loses around half the diff change from start to finish.

A simple example is that since 13-Jan difficulty has increased by 55.73% (yeah that's a scary number)
So if you were mining from say 10-Jan to now and then found a block, you'd actually lose over 25% of your expected reward!
All your shares from then to now have different PPS values, but your reward is based on 'now', the much worse PPS value.

This also affects us here to a lesser extent due to the fact we don't expect to find many blocks per diff change.
Thus why I'm trying to get that hash rate back up again.

Small pools like to pretend this doesn't happen Smiley

So basically this is a bad side effect of the N in PPLNS stretching over difficulty changes?
No, not exactly.
It's the bad side of blocks stretching over multiple difficulty changes.
For the N in PPLNS, it affects people ramping up or down.

Once you've ramped up, your reward 'matches' your hash rate when the block is found, since that is (expected to be) your hash rate for the last 5Nd also.
