PPLNS mining is not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. We are like block warriors trying to break the algo shield wall.

But the biggest reason for PPLNS, in my opinion, is that it matches the design of Bitcoin.
Quite literally, the only way to avoid variance is to use PPS, but the only way to run a PPS pool, without major risk of the pool failing, is to charge a high fee.
PPLNS removes the risk of the pool failing due to bad luck, and thus removes any
need for the higher fees all of the larger pools charge.
... including the large PPLNS pools, that charge higher fees
It does mean a rough road sometimes, but it's winding through very safe territory.
