Atletico Madrid is in the second spot because they scored less than Barcelona, otherwise in terms of points and games played, both teams are equal. In case Barcelona miss any point and Atletico Madrid win the next match then definitely Atlético Madrid will be the first.
It is pathetic the situation of Real Madrid in the other hand.. The whole team is at fault for underperforming, and I think the coach needs to redesign his squad and tactics to bring them back to winning ways.

Sometimes teams struggle even after having a brilliant season before so I don’t know why people are criticizing Real Madrid, they are not too good not to have a bad season so if they don’t perform well now they would definitely bounce back next season I believe.
