Nah, he´s not going to refuse it after playing c3. If he wasn´t interested in meeting the Marshall he´d have played a4 or d3.

There´s nothing wrong with d4 per se, it´s a reasonable move. And it´s a variation of the Marshall. But it´s not known to cause black much problems which is why it´s pretty rare. It can lead to setups similar to the Open if I remember correctly.

We will do great if we arent sacrificing pawns in this kind of game. A grandmaster would easily take advantage of that. Best way to keep it as equal as long as possible.
The Marshall Attack may not be the best possible opening but it should be an enjoyable choice. It has a good reputation compared to many less sound opening gambits and is not easy to defend even for a GM. Many world class players have lost with white against the Marshall including Anand and Kramnik in the games linked above by hermesesus!

I was expected 8.a4 so was happy to see 8.c3 instead
