My vote for d6. We can castle next move.

I vote for d6

It opens up the possibility to pin his knight and that pin could not be resolved without giving us time for one additional move

Can you explain this further?

To prevent that from happening he would have to move his pawn to h3. so we would have protected e5 and still have a move to continue developing

if he doesn't prevent it from happening we pin his knight with Bg4 so he can neither move his knight nor his queen unless he severely opens up the structure around the king (which he would not do Tongue)

it would probably happen the first way

I will also go for d6. Think it's still not the time for b5. Just let his bishop stand there doing not that much.

I don't like this opening so far. I always go for the Grunfeld defense when I play black.
Right now, as things stand, I would play d6 to defend e5, but I have never played this position before.
You can't really go into the Grunfield when they go for an e4 opening.
I did a little research: the opening starting with 1. e4 Nf6 is called Alekhine's Defence
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alekhine's_Defence
and the one starting with 1. e4 Nc6 is called Nimzowitsch Defence
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimzowitsch_Defence

The Grünfeld Defence is characterised by the moves: 1. d4 Nf6  2. c4 g6  3. Nc3 d5

I'll go for b5 as well. Do we want to fianchetto the bishop on c1?

I can't remember the last time I had to google as much as this thread! I thought bishops had vows against that? Cheesy

Do we want to fianchetto the bishop on c8?

I cannot answer that yet as it depends on what white does in the next few moves. In some variations we may play Bb7 but in others the bishop is better off on another square (such as e6 of g4).

I like playing the Grünfeld Defence when I get the change against 1.c4 and 1.d4 too. What opening do you prefer against 1.e4? The Sicilian?

I'm gonna go with b5 over d6 because i think it gives us a more open field for attack while also putting pressure on him. I'd rather not block the bishop in, I like it holding that line and where it can head to.

Thx for the explanations guys it really helps. Smiley

I'd love to be able to march those pawns up a few but I'm sure we'll never get that chance. Lol

For any beginners wondering, b5 prevents the threat of Bxc6 and Nxe5. For example:

6.Re1  O-O
7.Bxc6 dxc6
8.Nxe5

The same idea did not work last move because of e4 being unprotected:

6.Bxc6 dxc6
7.Nxe5 Nxe4 regaining the pawn.

Thanks for your explanations. It's clear now. I suppose we can also play 6...d6 to prevent this threat?
