I think he should choose to go to a weaker team and just change ambient.He should show his skills with a weaker team and that will be a kind of personal comeback and if he shows good results with this team probably someone of the big teams may think to get him.If he quit for a year maybe he will not be as competitive as he is now.
The issues is that he is not competitive now either. I don't question his motivation as he is one of the rare normal guys on the grid that just wants to race without PR bullshit around it, but he is making quite a lot of mistakes in last years and Ferrari is not in the good shape because of the engine issues this season and it seems that will continue throughout the entire season unless they manage to somehow minimize that with some updates.
Taking all written above into consideration it might be better to take one year of, recharge batteries, restore yourself and inner fire and then come back again with hunger if there is enough fuel in the tank left to go through that process.
All of us humans sometime need time to reinvent and reinforce ourselves, discover a new identity with new set of values, F1 drivers are no exceptions.
