Seems like a fair policy to me.  Although there is a small chance that I'm just using this thread to take care of one of my 5 necessary posts.

Big #3 for me.

These are good general rules that I feel I will like a lot more when I am a member. Grin

Yea, it's kind of annoying, I'm used to lurking a lot until I've got something to contribute or some burning question. Now I'm here putting down posts discussing this Grin

Man what a giant pain in the rear.  I guess weeds out the BS though.

It kinda is. I've always been lurking and now I find myself needing to PM pirateat40. First post made, now just gotta stay logged in for another four hours ... yay.

There's nothing wrong with the 4 hours requirement. I guess really special cases might come up, but how often do you really need to reply to something within 4 hours as newcomer?

Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have spent 4 hours online and have made 5 posts.

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic.

Also:
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted.
I think 4 hours online is too much. I think that it should be 1 hour, maybe 2, but not more.

Nobody's lurked for years on the forum. For those who claim they did, how could they never have discovered the newbie forum and this requirement? Chances are they didn't find the FAQs about posting etiquette either.

I've never lurked years anywhere.  Okay that's all I have to say for my first fluff post.  I'll try to make the other four better, so I'll wait until I actually have something to say.

Makes sense but its rather rude on people who lurk and just want to post on 1 topic thats it, lurked for years decide to signup one day... go to post on the topic they would like to then find out they cant.....

its kinda painfull, but i can respect that..
