My EVGA 3080 mines at 97-99 all day long no problem and it looks like it has mixed caps.

That is what I read about the evga cards. So it is right on point.

just the 3080 has had a lot of complaints so far as they have the inferior cap pattern.

a mixed pattern of round and rectangle caps seems to be good.

gigabyte is all of one cap (can't remember if all round or all rectangle)

this causes the hash rate to fade  from 95-100 to 75-80 over an hour or two of mining

caps? as in capacitors?

if so, seems an odd thing for caps to affect hash rate.

Not really those caps are directly on the back side of the gpu chip.  The use of loer cost caps also means they geneally have less tolerance on operational temperature.  This the ones using the cheaper mlcc caps have over heating issues that cause lost of hash.  Probably not an issue in gaming but sure creates issues for mining...which may be part of their plan.

Remeber a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Yeah exactly this.

Caps filter noise. ( my speaker builds in the 90's is paying off.   Grin. )

So if you use all one cap it will filter best at freq x

If you use mixed caps it will filter multiple frequencies .

What do sound freq filters on an audio cap have to do with memory freq on a gpu.

they are  pretty much Both based  on the vibrational pattern of the electrical power passing through them.

My guess is the "noise" missed by a one cap size patteren on the gigabyte units  gets expressed as memory ram heat.

So hash rate fades when you run a higher memory freq for 2 or more hours.  The inferior caps get saturated and don't do the job.

This is another reason for delay of the 3080 units as some better cap work is getting done on them .  There was a great link in this section to a really good detailed article.  I am condensing the general ideas  in the article.

Let me look for it. As I do not take credit for what I said.
here are some of the articles.

https://hothardware.com/news/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-stability-woes-faulty-capacitors

here are two cap patterns from article above

one is 2 sets of caps

other is all the same caps

All Gigabyte models?Aorus are quite good, have 54 of them never had an issue, but the Gaming OC models had to replace all the fans at least once for all 6 of them over 2,5 years of mining.

They are talking 3080’s...you dont have any of those

Yes, I know, was just wondering what kind of issues they have, because if I would see Aorus on stock for sure I will buy some....

Probably gonna be tough to get but the early rumors are the new AMD 6800 non xt does 1.5 times a 3090 at a cost of $579.  I assume it's on eth.

https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-radeon-rx-6800-allegedly-1-5x-faster-than-geforce-rtx-3090-in-cryptocurrency-mining

Gonna have gamers and miners going for this if it holds true.

I am trying to get some 3080s through work - we sometimes buy HPCs and I will see, if my supplier can get me some. But am not confident. Are there any specific models of 3080 I should buy or avoid?!

I would replace my 1070s with 3080s if I could find the damn things. Looks like I'm going to go more team red this time because nVidia is still a paper launch after 1 month out. I've tried the auto add to cart gpu script but the bots still beat me. People must be sitting by the PC watching for stock to pop up or they must have knowledge of when the stock will be listed on the website. Really takes any joy out of getting new hardware...

The nvidia 3000 launch has been Pathetic.

Not the first time on their part.

the 1000 series was slow

the 2000 series you could buy mostly because the cards sucked.

@Philip, if you could pick and choose, which GPUs to buy right now, which ones would it be? I probably have free electricity for about 6 more months and after that would have to sell the cards. Right now, most of my rigs are 4GB cards, so thinking about selling those and the I have two options:
-upgrade to new gen cards - RTX 3080 for example
-upgrade to polaris 8GB for cheap

The first option would be more expensive, but the resale price would be better
The second option would give me a higher hashrate with less capital invested.

I am actually leaning towards the second option - or just holding on to the 4GGB cards and mining whatever is most profitable. But would love your opinion.

what cost are the nvidia. 700 to 800 usd get some.

and keep some of what you have.

try to sell some of what you have.

if you can get 3080’s at proper prices 700 to 800 usd.

sell one to me.😀

ie pretend you have 100 4gb cards.

try to sell 50 of them cheaply and replace with 3080 cards.

This is what I'm doing, replacing 1070s with 3080s when I can find them.  If things be come unprofitable the 3080s should retain their value.  Also nice having less cards.

It almost never all or nothing. Mining is a grinding slow business.

I never sell all old gear.  Just some and replace with new.

APY means per year - it's in the name. You get 1% per year!

The 7 days just means the rate on a moving average (averaged over 7 days), because the rate can change on a day to day basis.

Binance does not give you 0.98% per 7 days. It’s 0.98% APY - averaged over 7 days since it can change day to day.

Otherwise it would be insane returns.

Yeah 1% a week before compounding would be pretty nuts. That's like the crazy rates seen on Polo when everybody was margin trading the alts and people were paying 0.5% per day for margin shenanigans. It seems to good which means I should probably avoid it. Even though it's Binance nothing to keep them saying "we got hacked" and losing all your deposit.
