i think you made this coin come-from-beyond but used a dummy account because of that orange colored ignore button under your avatar.
I just tried the http://localhost:7874/nxt?requestType=getAliasURI&alias=Google URL but all I get is an error reply.
Do I need a version different than 0.3.20 to use the alias feature?

Could you maybe write a short explanation, just what it is and what it can be used for? So I have somthing to link people to?
Alias System is like decentralized DNS but, unlike DNS, Alias System can link names to any URI - website, phone number, email, bitcoin address, location, anything. Alias System is included into version 0.4.0 and will be activated at block 22000. Nodes that don't upgrade to 0.4.0 won't be able to validate blocks containing AS-transactions.
To assign an alias someone should open https://localhost:7875/alias.html, fill the fields and hit OK.
Aliases may contain only digits and case-insensitive latin letters. Currently it's impossible to transfer aliases to other accounts, but owner of the account can reassign an alias to any URI at any time. Alias is considered tied to an account after the 1st confirmation of the AS-transaction. NRS picks transactions with higher fees in the 1st place (actually fee/size ratio is used).
The most valuable aliases (like "nxt", "sex" and "batman") r waiting for that lucky guy/gal who will become a billionaire after squatting and reselling them...

After about 10 minutes after going through the Alias process, i see no deduction of 1NXT in my account. What does this mean? That it wasn't registered, that someone put a higher bid, that it's already taken?

You need to wait for block 22000 to assign Alias.

But that doesnt explain why you would need to know who future signers are. It only says that you would need to calculate the 1440th generationSignature and pre-empt it by creating an account with a key-pair that would cause your hit to be lower than everyone elses targets right? how do future signers effect that situation?
Output of the last digest depends on ur public key and generating signature of previous block. It's deterministic but still can't be guessed. Look at this example:
Alice signs block 1 - signature is A
Bob signs block 2 - signature is Digest(A + Bob_public_key)
Charlie signs block 3 - signature is Digest(Digest(A + Bob_public_key) + Charlie_public_key)
See? U can choose any Charlie_public_key but without knowing Bob_public_key in advance it gives no advantage at all.
yep! i do understand. we just weren't communicating properly. as soon as i thought i saw a problem what you wrote up there is exactly the solution i proposed.
bcnext is a freaking genius. I worked so hard to try to figure something out like this myself to no avail. What i proposed in my thread is a far cry from this much better solution. Good to hear... but I was talking about the Alias!

"nxt:myalias" requires a plugin. Noone is developing it AFAIK. Also u will be able to type "http://anypublicnode.com#myalias" to be redirected to the URI (if it's URL).
If you try and buy an alias that has already been bought, do you still pay the fee or is this returned to you?
