I know you guys have been good at answering emails in the past, and the last week or 2 you guys have stopped responding because you are too busy/backed up... that is okay.  But when you guys do get a chance, please look into these 2 things for me:

1) I will send you my verification id's via email, instead of going thru the site.

2) I never got the 30 day trading promotion. (that would be a lot since i am a gambler and make a lot of trades)

thanks

Something I must bring up-- There are a few posters who have said that bitfinex is the next bitcoinica and have only bad things to say about bitfinex.  As someone that is unfamiliar with the history with bitcoinica (all i know is that bitcoinica was closed down, whether users funds stolen or not, i'm not sure), could some one clue me in on how bitfinex is different than bitcoinica, and what bitfinex's legal status is (for example, could some entity legally shut down bitfinex?)

Thanks

A question to the Bitfinex team:

What are your plans regarding denomination in mBTC?
Are there any concrete plans yet?

Maybe it would be possible to choose denomination in milli Bitcoins in the Account settings (in a similar vein as if choosing an accounting currency). Obviously such is not outright trivial to implement -- when an account has been switched to mBTC, the $-rates should be divided by 1000 too, since the motivation of using mBTC is to get back to tangible values, which are easier to judge and easier to enter into forms by humans.

Please check if you are affected by this security issue: [removed because they ARE affected, sent a PM]
Could you tell us how this affects BFX Users?
Shouldn't be too bad from what I understand - session cookies might be valid longer than expected, so you should take care that they don't (or didn't) get stolen, as it might be possible to log into a quite old session using an old cookie.

Bitfinex is back up for me

And lucky enough, the market has stabilised also.
If you ask me, someone tried to trigger a drop. Happened on some of the last nights to. Well, night in Europe means day in Asia.

TL;DR

This is the last straw for me and BitFinex.

After this I move everything out.

This was posted on IRC and I thought I'd add it to this thread.

*******

I am guessing it's DDoS , because it says "too heavy load".

I am guessing Bitfinex is lying about what's happened here.

i think it could be someone trying to manipulate the market again , like in march / april

with mtgox -  same thing happened

t would be nice to hear from someone , to know what's happening

somebody ran the price up from 1000 - 1020

then , started DDoS on bitfinex

because its probably the easiest exchange to DDoS

then , dumped a hella lot of coins

what happens next ? we wait to see

*******

Bottom line: I think BitFinex are lying about problems in Iceland.

Worst of all there is not even an update on their situation.

This is the last straw for me.

After this I am moving everything to MtGox.

Dear Customer,

At midnight (24 hours) the local time (GMT) an emergency maintenance is planned affecting customers relying our hosting networks. Expected disturbance is estimated up to 15 minutes. This is emergency maintenance caused by a network error that has been causing interruptions on the network today.
We apologize for the very short notice and any inncovenience caused by this!

I had problems with my wikileaks mirror & tor server @ hetzner. But that was at the very early moments. I moved that stuff back to Luxembourg ( http://server.lu ).

Agree, but HE was forced by a torrent of customer complaints and issued a statement later that WL mirrors is in compliance with the law and thus fine with them. It all comes down to a country's current legislation, you can sue a hoster in Europe if he acts against the law.

There is no law against BitCoin in Germany, this is why bitcoin.de is successfully doing business in Germany. They are even about to merge with a German financial institution and expand.

Anyway I believe Orangewebsite might have been an optimal choice for Bitfinex for many reasons (see OrangeWebsite's standing against SOPA, running 100% on renewable energy or offering the use of BitCoins), I am sure the Bitfinex team will learn from this little fiasco and act accordingly and responsibly.

@ Xavier: So as you  know this is a DDoS - can you tell me the price for BTC on May 11th , 13:00 GMT pls? - Srsly, calm down - one of my last server outages was caused by a pigeon nest...

Bottom line: Whatever is happening, I think it's clear that BitFinex are lying about problems in Iceland.

They will not even post an update on the situation

Geez man. This problem happened just some 20 minutes ago. How can you assume that there must be someone communicating to you right now? Probably you assume, in your imagination, that there is a huge control room at Bitfinex, where herds of people are buzzing around like in a Hollywood movie?  Wink

Just try to judge such a situation with a grain of common sense and realism.

How is this a coincidence Huh

Their site gets DDoS'd at the same time there is a massive pump and dump in the price ??

Seriously , what the hell are you smoking ? Or maybe you are the attacker or related to them in some way?

If I can vouch for Raphael and Giancarlo - I know that 1.) this is not a DDOS, and 2.) this is the hosting provider not the result of a hack/unannounced maintenance on their part.

Of course a DDoS is the hosting provider's problem , not their problem.

It doesn't change the fact this is a DDoS.

Maybe they are not lying intentially because they hosting provider is lying.

However it has been way over 15 minutes and the site is still offline. This is not a routine maintenance. A maintenence would mean that the site did not appear at all , whereas in this case we are seeing it appear, but the following message

This website is under heavy load

We're sorry, too many people are accessing this website at the same time. We're working on this problem. Please try again later.

This is 100% DDoS, and 100% somebody (BitFinex or the web host) lying.

Even if BitFinex are being honest , why did they host with such a crap provider? (Who the hell is OrangeWebsite... makes me think it is somehow related to BitFinex , therefore equally dishonest. )

I guess painful lesson learned from this episode:

Don't put your money into the hands of incompetent and dishonest people

Just let me access your site again so i can move my money out

While DigitalOcean and Linode are probably the most advanced and hottest (as in 100% SSD) Hosters on earth right now, they are located in the U.S. - Fear of getting shut down is huge there if you are a BitCoin startup.

Iceland however, host of Wikileaks and a country where the Pirate Party has recently been an elected member of the ruling Government, is a much more intelligent choice for BFX. However the government changed recently and is not so progressive anymore.

If I might suggest these Germany-based hosters, who are extremely reliable (99,9% uptime) and spoke themselves out publicly for hosting Wikileaks Mirrors with them is welcome. (They have not said anything about BitCoin, so this is why I keep bringing WL up as an measurement of political progressivism)

www.df.eu
www.hetzner.de
.. probably many more.

Oh yeah i forgot that they can't operate on US land ^^. Those germany-based hosters sound very sexy.
