you can not overclock them with that heatsink, that thing is pure trash, is sitting at 89°, will blow your card on the long run, better to wait for custom design as usual, which would mean paying more than $200

I bet i can overclock the card with that heatsink without any problem. I got over 70 Reference 7950 here with the " small heatsink".
They r all running at 1150 core and 1500 mem on ETH over 6 month without any problem. The room temp ist around 30 Celsius = 86 F. All card running @75-80 Celsius.
So @ Fanboy Amph  u talking to much shit.  Just go and play with ur Nvidia toys.

From the information we got so far, the 1070 is better. If the 480 RX can run 30 at 120 W, then 480 is better.

sure i'm the one talking shit, when as usual who respond to me don't know jack shit, read this and do a favor to yourself http://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/7952/rx-480-shit-heatsink-alert#latest

because no, your betting on this has zero way to succeed, since you are utterly and absolutely wrong on this matter, they have super shitty heatsink at the moment

i'm costantly investigating on the best future gpu rig for the time being, and you think you have a clue on what i'm saying? nvidia at the moment is better deal with it, talking about the 1070 of course

A R9 280x at 92 when mining is nothing unusual - it's just the card is a hot running card - and it probably thermal limits around 95ish.

It is actually 102c where it reaches thermal limits and shut down the computer.. tested it Cheesy

I probably should have said "thermal throttles" not "thermal limits".
My R9 290 Sapphire Reference cards start throttling at 94, not sure what their shutdown temp is as I don't think they ever reached that.

Same here I have a reference card that stays at 94 constantly while mining and throttles down to stay at 94 but I noticed that the system reports the fan at like 40-50% only.  Is there some special trick to make the fans go to 80?

You can use MSI Afterburner. That's what I use. My fans are blowing at around 50%, for a maximal temperature of 58°C (I have 380, not the cards you mention).

I tried MSI Afterburner and they seemed to have no effect on the fan speed of the reference card.  I'm guessing the guy that had it before me put some custom firmware on it or something perhaps.

Does MSI Afterburner recognise the cards ? If I don't intsall AMD Catalyst, mine aren't detected.

Amd new cards cannot undervolt or downclock...

WTF you hear that GTFO with your FUD the new cards have a brand new tool that has been demoed for undervolt and OC

where do these people come from

http://wccftech.com/amd-rx-480-1500mhz-overclocking-tool-voltage-2/

But dude, here's what I think the deal is, because of the thermal issues with extracting heat out of a even smaller area, AMD is turning a bug into a feature with their fancy software. Not only do you have a smaller area, the smaller chip has less thermal mass.

To get to the point, I don't think that this superduper wonderful software was conceived in a vacuum. Companies are always bandaiding hardware using software. You might blow this chip if the heat output ramps up faster than the cooling can ramp up. So I think the point of the software is to be open regarding how fast and how much you can change stuff.

Ive never had an issue with the reference coolers , i have r9 290s that i bought in 2013 that are still going strong, yes they run a bit hot but those cards are my most solid.  If theres an issue i will RMA them after a year or so
either way i dont plan to OC much just to around 1300 mem to get 27-28 mhs, the bigger the fans and the more OC the more power use anyways.

a bigger issue with these ref cards is the six pin power connector, 8 pin would have been better.

Oh!  It will be  nice  Smiley sorry  i didn't heard about it..  now (my 280 and 380xses)  undervolting was only possible if you  flashing bios (with all consequences of flashing)
actually some 380 and 380x can undervolt withoute bios the MSI OC versions cand undervolt
but youre right the majority of 280 and 280x cannot undervolt outside of bios

Ok, guys I chased down the post on the Ethereum forum regarding this 72c temp on the rx480.  It seems the user Koody posted a followup to that information when asked about the settings, ambient temps, etc.  It is winter time where Koody is at and the temps in the room with the miner are PRETTY COLD!

Did you test in an air conditioned area?

Room temp 2°C - 4°C, is winter here, no need air conditioned Smiley

This brings us back to the topic of these cards running hot.  I have seen a few posts now indicating these reference cards are running around 90c.  I think those that are running off to buy these cards without taking this into consideration may regret it.  I would love to jump into one of these pre-orders for these cards, but it would have to be for the aftermarket cards with the better cooling solutions and they are quieter.

I hope I am wrong and just being overly cautious.  I hate being the "Neddering Naybob of Negativity (N3)" here, but I would hate to see folks jumping into these new cards and finding themselves in a pickle.

Just under volt and call it a day I'm guessing..the reference r9 290's run hot, but with a decent under volt (-100) and box fan cooling the rig my cards all run in the mid 70's.
