Hey I'm looking to add 6 RX480s to my gaming PC when they come out and use them for mining.  My motherboard is a MSI Z77-45 gaming and can accommodate 7 cards.  I currently have a Titan X in one slot that I use for gaming and mining with NiceHash.  I'd like to keep the Titan where it is and add the 6 RX480s on risers.  What PSU should I buy during this upgrade/mod?  Is a platinum 1600 watt overkill?  I'm in CA and have expensive electricity.  Thanks!

What is the hash rate you are getting with titan X also if you just want to buy 6xRX480 for gaming its a bad choice but yes 1200$ and the mining speed you will get approximately ~180mh/s on 900 watts .

Is a platinum 1600 watt overkill? I don't think so . 1 card only wants 150 watts .

RX 490 16GB HBM2,9,830 GFLOPS,
Q4 2016

By the time AMD release it, GPU mining will be dead, ethereum will be 1$ and Nvidia will hold 89% of the market Wink

What makes you so sure? I remember people like you saying the same about bitcoin years back when it was only at a few pennies and was CPU mined.

C'mon, grow a beard mate.

real world do not care about mining, atm NV hold ~80%, 1080/1070 are really fast (for gaming we talk here), AMD is late and 480x will be slower, sure they will push price down but NV will answer at same day or even 2 days earlier with 1060...

sure I am miner so atm have AMD cards only, but i do not day dream Smiley

The price of the 1070/80 is too expensive and they are not worth the money to buy for the mining. I will keep on using the 390.

The 1080 and 1070 aren't targeted at large-volumn segments of the market, so even if they DO manage to achieve "89%" of their market segment, AMD will be eating up NVidia sales overall by a WIDE margin with the RX 480 MAINSTREAM product.

IMO AMD made a VERY SMART choice on where to position their first "next gen" card - IF they can get enough into the sales channel to matter.

Thermal design 200w is what that site is quoting, if that is true then wow!

4th quarter means as late as December

I read a post from an amd insider that the r9 480 will do 25mh  if so nice.

It also means the r9 490 may approach 38mh at 200 watts

since the r9 390 does 31 mh at 270 watts it is a big improvement.

That is a good achievement. But December is too late. We might just have 6 months to mine since then.

the 256bit , im not sure will reach 25mhs , i think the RX 480 will produce 20mhs
25mh/s for 6 pin is 75w if even only 20mh/s it is still damn good. I am definitely excited for this new nm of gpu.

Quoting this for reference but we will surely get 30mh/s on 150 watts  and the price is only 200$ i am anxiously waiting 29th . I hope early buyers post the hash speed of this card .

It is great to see that you are working on reducing the number of effective ROP. That could save more energy.

Just so you know, i i already pre-ordered one. From the moment they're available i'll be getting one. (one to start with).

First thing i'll do, is check out that rom and see what i can do, from the looks of it, and what i've read and heard, it seems that it's fiji-like, so i will probably be able to crank it down even more regarding power consumption Smiley So this could be a huge winner.. If..... and also if...... Wink

Follow the lead ot TheStilt and disable some of the ROP units for power savings on a mining-specific BIOS, as well as undervolt?

Still working on that Smiley

Also keep in mind that a card like this shouldn't in theory cause a change in hash rates as its not providing a jump in hash rate and farms only have so much space to place the cards.  So it seems like the biggest win is for the hobbyist being we pay the highest rates on electricity vs. farms. Those farms wont really want to buy this card being it could reduce their net hash if the farm is maxed out on space and their electricity is cheap enough to where they would lose more by switching over.

Most major farms are more limited by heat removal ability and power limits than physical space, I suspect.

I'm limited by Power, not heat, definitely not, cards are running at 50 degrees while it's 25 in the environment.

I do think for the "very" big farms it could be a power limit as well.. Smiley

Huh?
The new 480's could perhaps consume only 100 watts with a under volt and reach a close to similar hash rate most likely around the 23 mh mark to speculate.  If things turn out to be good I will seriously consider switching over my gpus to the 480 and further build dedicated rigs on that card as it seems like it will be pleasure to do so.

How much did you pay for that?

Haven't payed anything yet, i contacted my supplier to get one for me as soon as they can.

And they will. All depends on when they can order from the main suppliers..

I like your argument that the 1070 will ROI a bit earlier due to the fact that you can mine with it very soon.

That is mainly because the difficulty is rising too fast. If you get the card now, you can mine at lower difficulty.
Possibly the best thing to do if you have the funds is buy a couple mine, and release at RX 480 release and lose about $100 per from new price but probably mine much more than worth it by then.
For me its also a farms location power budget - if i add only ~ 750w instead of 1050w ist the matter of farm having 2 additinal rigs or 1
Of course if nano drops in price that would be good - but if its not happaning immidiatly on 10th of june thats roi question again and newer gpu alway preferable
