The "building" typically consists only of "rooms" with similar functionality but different wallpaper. If the interface to make them consist of "anything" is easy enough, then there will spontaneously rise a class of Engineers (which is even mentioned in the intro). They are developers capable of plugging in the new stuff to people's houses and other places.

Crowdfunding and competition between guilds who has the biggest guildhouse with best goods is definitely part of the game!
