All the stories are similar... and I don't see a problem with gambling, I see a problem with someone gambling with money they couldn't afford to lose with the desire to recover the lost money. In the process, you invested even more money that you don't have and gambled even harder and greedier... a disaster in the making.

- Keeping myself busy and focusing on work.

Good thing you stopped before things escalated and got uglier. I have been repeating exactly what you wrote for years... it's the only right way. Each person has to focus on other things and keep himself busy doing those things. In your case it is work and I believe you have found some other interesting activities. In any case it can be anything that is not gambling!

We should never gamble with money we cannot afford to lose. It's smart to take breaks when we are winning and when we are losing, but it's more worth it in the moments when we are losing... that way we can avoid spending too much when we are caught up in gambling fire.

GxSTxV, good luck man! We learn from our mistakes and we try not to repeat them!

Honestly, I wasn't waiting for this huge support from our community of gamblers. I can see that most of old gamblers has suffered or been in similar situations as mine at least once in their journey. I'm happy to see a positive reaction from you all, and not blaming me for what I have done.
This topic will stay open as long as there are many members here sharing their same stories and suggestions. Gambling is a fun activity, however, it should be taken with much cautious. The best thing to heal from addiction is the first step which is admitting to yourself first and sharing with community, family or friends to seek help.
I think that you will be fine and you will cope with it, but you should never relax completely, otherwise you can start on the same path again. Sharing your experiences or failures is one of those points that helps, even if there are no close relatives nearby, then many give feedback on our forum.

I did similar things several times, but the amounts were small, because I realized that it is like a funnel that can suck us in completely, the only question is to stop, the decision about which no one except ourselves will comment. I have not played for high stakes for a long time and have set for myself an amount above which I simply close the game and that's it. This helps me to stay in good shape to this day.

It feels good to see a gambler that's breaking free from gambling addiction, it is not easy, I have seen so many examples and they failed to win the war, you staying on your own for 30 days without gambling is massive, congrats on that brother.

Maybe it is just me but I don't like to be sold some hope that might never work out in the end, gambling most times feels impossible, my mental health struggled with it at times as keeping my safe lane without going off my boundary can be hard at times.

Just keep yourself in the midst of something engaging, an escapist type of world, maybe some TV aeries or some console multiplayer game with friends, you will quickly forget about your gambling life, for me, to understand gambling is to fear gambling, it is all in its definition.

The journey to recovery can be rough but when you're determined, you can achieve it. Congratulations on how far you've come on abstinence to gambling and I hope others learn from your story.
It will definitely start from ourselves, the self admittance that we need help and that we want to recover and forget about gambling addiction, is the best course of action that we can take. And so even if it is very rough road ahead, we can do it and with the help of our family.

Another thing I'd suggest is to not be focused on updating the community about your progress but going behind to test the waters since you don't really have anyone monitoring you. Your determination should serve as a watchman to you because that's the fastest way you can get healing.
It might be good though to update us, at least he still has the "responsibility" to us. And with that he knows that he shouldn't fail because the whole community is behind him. So it's better for him to keep us posted as well and for sure we will encourage him to continue and who knows, in just matter of months he is already back on track and a different person.

I gambled away a significant amount of money that was meant to pay off an important loan. On top of that, I borrowed more money and lost it again.

Here are a few strategies I found helpful in staying away from gambling all this time:
- Spending the money I earn on paying bills and expenses beside the friends I took loand from

Day by day, the desire to gamble is fading and I feel stronger in my journey.

I have quote only that part of your post on purpose. While you say you are in a process of recovery from gambling, could it be that you are only in a process of closing gambling debt? And you only feel relief because the size of the debt is decreasing. You think that you are recovering from gambling addiction, but when you have cleared your debt, it will trigger you to return? That when you will drop chains in a form of a debt, you will continue gambling as previously.

When a gambler realizes that he is addicted to gambling and if he tries to get himself out of that addiction then he can definitely get himself out of gambling addiction. Self-effort plays a big role in getting yourself out of such situations.

Now if I have a friend who is addicted to gambling and I keep telling him that you have to stop gambling or get out of addiction but if he doesn't want to get out of addiction in his heart then no matter how hard I try to get him  I can't get out of addiction.
First of all the addict must have will power. <...>

That's because your friend has not yet hit rock bottom. In the life of an addict there is first the moment when he starts to realise that he has an addiction but he tends to minimise it, he thinks he will be able to control it. At that point it doesn't matter what you or others tell him. In the end, if they start seriously trying to get rid of the addiction, it is because they realise that they have fallen too low and they have to do something about it. Something like that must have happened to the OP when he lost the money he had to pay back a loan and on top of that he borrowed more and lost it too.

If he has the will power, the gambler can do whatever he needs to do to keep himself busy later, such as playing sports, keeping up with his work, or spending most of his time with friends or family. By doing this, his brain will be on the other side and as a result he will gradually forget about gambling.

Keeping yourself busy can be an effective way to overcome addictions, including gambling as you said, because by Diverting attention to other positive activities of course we can slowly reduce the urge to gamble by focusing on activities that may be more beneficial to us and others, but in the case of not having money I think is not the right solution,  Because how difficult it is to not have money will actually have a worse impact on us later, to be honest, I personally will never entrust money to others, because after all it will only add to our minds if maybe the money is also misused by others.
Channeling your attention to work and other forms of entertainment is a good means of coming out from gambling addiction. One can decide to get an extra job or even volunteer for a non-profit organization just to keep himself busy. Identifying another source of getting fun is also good. I love playing computer games and it could be a good alternative to the fun I get from gambling.

Not having a cash or debit card is not an ideal way of controlling gambling activities. An addict can borrow money to gamble just to satisfy that desire. So, it is better to handle the behavior than to access money. But we have to take note that there is no set standard or pattern for fighting addiction. The plan that worked for an individual might be inactive if another person applies it. Individuals should just identify the plan that suits them.

- Keeping myself busy and focusing on work.

Keeping yourself busy is one of the best ways for an addict to distract themselves from gambling. They can find a hobby that they enjoy, or do work, or do other activities that keep their attention away from gambling. Because the problem that gamblers often face is that the urge to gamble arises when they are not doing anything - although this is quite difficult to do because not everyone has the same ability to restrain themselves, but if this is practiced continuously then over time an addict will be able to control their addiction to gambling.
To stop yourself from gambling addiction controlling your daily activities through busyness can be a good decision, although it can be a difficult decision against your mind but if you are able to do it you can establish yourself as a successful person. Real experience is that when a friend of mine broke up with his girlfriend he made himself so busy that he did not give time to his close friends due to which he emerged as a completely successful businessman in a few years. In the case of gambling too, if you feel that you are addicted, you should try to stay busy continuously for alternative income to remove the pain of losing your money so that you can earn money as well as have mental peace. This is a great decision that increases your performance through hard work as well as earn money and try to refrain from regretting the negative decisions of the past.

everyone can busy themselves with what they want according to their wishes but not everyone who is addicted can easily divert their desire to gamble with other things, I'm sure there are those out there who find it very difficult to eliminate their desire to gamble until when they don't have money they will force themselves to gamble.
I never thought about giving personal money even to trusted people like family members. Keep in mind everyone is sensitive to money, someone can change when they already have or hold money, especially a lot of money.
Some of the comments I read said that when you are addicted it will be difficult to get out, and I agree with that right because I believe that when you are addicted it is indeed difficult to recover, some are in the process but I'm sure the process is not easy, maybe even their mentality is tested.

It is indeed difficult for us as humans who are always trapped in gambling, even though there are many gambling promotions from all over the world that make us unable to avoid it, what's more, gambling sites have penetrated the digital world so whatever we can to avoid serious addiction to gambling, even though we ourselves are promoting gambling sites but with this thread chat. we can control ourselves so as not to get caught up in gambling that makes us addicted which endangers our finances in the future, with tips from OP at least we can take an example from OP's journey to stop being addicted to gambling.
Difficult or not depends on how each individual responds to it because if someone is able to control their own desires and lust for gambling activities, then whatever happens with the various promotions they see will not be able to influence someone stance to really stop and limit everything.
Everyone will have different thoughts but OP does provide little picture for all of us to learn and start trying to provide special pressure and limitations even though we are in gambling environment.

It's great that you managed to deal with this problem on your own, as far as I understand. Indeed, the method of replacing gambling addiction with other activities, in this case work, is an effective tool. Viewing information about positive examples of getting rid of gambling addiction is also a great way to fight. It is like when quitting smoking, it is recommended to constantly rejoice that another day has passed without tobacco. Well, spending money on necessary payments with friends creates a feeling of support, although it is a bit of a specific way, nevertheless, it is effective.

It is good if you realize about what happen to you because the accepting of the situation that we face is not easy. But you can do that and can learns from your mistake and wants to change it. You see that having control is necessary and a must in gambling to avoid playing gambling excessively. When we realizes about the risk of playing gambling and we learned from our past, we can be careful when playing gambling. We don't wants to get the same experienced as before so we will always control ourselves when playing gambling.

We know that is not easy to stay aware from gambling but we can keeps trying and learning so we can use gambling as one activity that helps us to use our spare time. But we don't have to use gambling if we think that can give risk too big for us and use the other activities as @OP mention. It is no problem if you still involve in gambling but now, you can control yourself with right and will not do the same thing as before.

Someone who is addicted will not be easy to recover, this is like a drug addiction, maybe there must be a strict disciplined rehabilitation stage. I once experienced an addiction that was not too severe but what happened to my neighbor was worse because he lost his property, assets, house, even his own wife because he was annoyed by his excessive gambling behavior.
This happened because he himself could not recover from his addiction which was caused by the idea of gambling being attached to his brain so that it was difficult to eliminate, even reducing it was difficult.

There are actually many examples that we can see and learn from the cases that have occurred. It's just that there are still many people who gamble by ignoring the many cases of negative impacts of gambling that have occurred, the problem is more about each person's awareness.
Yeah it's not easy to recover from any kind addiction because if something that can make people addicted because it gives dopamine and satisfaction to the user. It's start from the person to try to quit, without this, it's high likely they will back to be addicted.

@OP is a good example how can a gambling addict can slowly recover from the addiction.

Unfortunately not all gambling addicts aware with their activity and they will gamble until they die.

As I commented to you in the other thread, in your case the best thing to do is to leave it for good. If you look at Oshosondy, who left it dry and says that this year he has gambled a few times with small amount he recommends the same, and is that for a person who has had these problems, betting even little can trigger again the pattern of binge gambling.

Besides, the problem I see with this is that you can lose a fortune in a short time. A heroin or cocaine addict can't take thousands of dollars worth of drugs in a day, but with gambling you can lose them in minutes.

So be careful and keep it up.

I would say that knowledge alone isn’t enough but selfcontrol is even more important.

That's right, if it happens as in many things in life. People know what they have to do to lose weight but very few do it. You have to create the conditions in your life to avoid temptation.
