While exchanges are a great place to purchase digital currencies, they may not be the best place to hold such assets.

"Don't store coins on an exchange," emphasized Eliosoff. "In Bitcoin's short history many, many exchanges have gotten hacked," he noted.

"It's fine to buy on an exchange like  Coinbase, but then move your coins into an online wallet like https://blockchain.info/wallet/, a mobile wallet like Jaxx or Coinomi, or create a paper wallet - all free and pretty easy," said Eliosoff.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov said Tuesday that he has been paying network administrators in bitcoin to bypass a government ban on his popular messaging platform.

The messaging app's creator announced Tuesday in his Telegram channel that he had created bitcoin grants for administrators running virtual private networks (VPNs) and other proxy services to allow users access to the platform after the Russian government blacklisted Telegram for refusing to share private messages. That ban went into effect last week, and as reported this week by local media outlets, the government is doing all it can - such as blocking millions of IP addresses - in an attempt to stop people from using Telegram.

While losing Russia-based users - estimated at 7 percent of Telegram's total base - would not have a long-term negative impact on the app, Durov said "it is important for me personally to make sure we do everything we can for our Russian users."

The lightning network is comprised of bi-directional payment channels between two nodes. This means that either one of those nodes should be able to initialize a transaction at any time. These transactions require both parties to be actively participating in updating the smart contracts that keep the channel alive. If one party fails to respond, they are essentially in violation of the smart contract, and are forfeiting their claim to any of the funds in the channel.

Non-responsive clients are a liability to anyone opening up a channel. It means that their bitcoin may be tied up in the channel until the timeout period. An unresponsive node means the channel is wasted. It's similar to a denial of service attack, except it's tying up bitcoin rather than bandwidth.
