This Ripple is very difficult to get started with... i need to "trust" bitstamp... but because i have no XRP, i can not even trust Bitstamp... i am trying to move 3 BTC from bitstamp to my ripple wallet... but this convoluted system simply will not allow me.

Can any kind soul send me 300 XRP?

I will send it back if you want, once i figure out how to turn BTC into XRP from within Ripple.
1 btc I will do it

I've extended 1 USD of trust to everyone I listed previously.

what now?

I'd feel equally comfortable trusting strangers on the internet with small amounts as one internet company with a large amount.

My main interest in Ripple is transferring Bitcoin over it and seeing if there's a way to implement P2P lending club over it.

bitcoin - the aerogel of money

I have a similarly long trust list. I think this is our urge to connect with people driving us to do this...

As said before by more knowledgable people than me, this might not be the best way to go about this. It was suggested we should all trust a handful (currently there only is bitstamp) gateways instead of building a WOT-like net of trust.

I just can't make up my mind (it is that way with many things ripple) wether such community-trust-clustering is a good idea or not.

On the one hand we're distributing risk. Bitinstant runs with our BTC => all gone. Molecular runs with our BTC => only a fraction gone.

On the other hand you'd probably have a hard time collecting your USD 0.1 from me in meatspace somehow. With bitstamp there could at least be joint effort to sue them or whatever.

Thoughts?

The problem I see with trusting too many people is that ripple money will seek the "path of least resistance".

If you grant trust to hundreds of people, all it takes is for one of those accounts to be hacked,  and some anonymous hacker ends up owing money to you instead of the person you trust.

These might be concerns for the future, but right now, we need to start somewhere. In order use/test the full functionality of Ripple I need a minimal web of trust. I don't mind losing a few bitcents just for the entertainment and educational value.

The reason I am only granting BTC is that they are easy to collect both in meatspace and outside.

I think you're on to something there. Didn't someone a year or two ago do a cross-US road trip paying for everything with Bitcoin?

Would it be possible for someone to use Ripple to barter for food and lodging during a cross-country road trip?

Ok. So far, I've granted trust to:

bbit
Severian
Peter Lambert
lebing
Belkaar
Melbustus
gweedo
phelix
kokojie
Mageant
herzmeister
ribuck
AlexNeto
molecular
grondilu

I granted tiny BTC amounts for testing purposes.  I'll keep it tiny until I figure out how exactly Ripple works.

I'd be very grateful if some of you reciprocated, so that I can play around with finding paths etc.

Trying to get started, sent some BTC to my bitstamp account, but i can't withdraw to XRPs because i don't have XRPs in my Ripple wallet yet and can't set up a trust for Bitstamp? I think that's where I'm at :-)

you need xrp, at least 300, I think. It's a prerequisite to establishing trust, making transactions,... if I understood correctly.

just managed to git clone the client repo and have the client running locally now.

here's what I used to get it to work.

https://ripple.com/wiki/Ripple_Client

what it doesn't tell you explicitly: after build, "cp config-example.js config.js"

why would one do this? Maybe to be able to play with / look at the code and/or incorporate patches earlier.

I'm going to try removing my bitstamp BTC trust. This might result in the bitstamp BTC IOUs I hold to be converted to IOUs from any of the many people I still trust with BTC.

Note that I'm doing this for testing purposes, nothing indicates bitstamp isn't trustworthy.

Good idea.  I was also wondering if the trust system is persistent or retro-active.

Where is the thread where I could tell everyone how awesome I think this project is?

you can make one. could result in interesting discussions.

maybe "boil down what ripple is into one short sentence"

I'll make a poll, because I suspect this is going to be a bit controversial.

be sure to post the link here Wink
