I think you should choose etherium for investment. Cause this coin have lot of chance to grow again like 2017.
What ever you choose it's your choice. 500 is good start to buy and if you are going to make a research just do a survey about tron or ethereum to know what is compatible to your 500 dollars capital and for sure you can decided fastly . But ethereum is the coin that you need to have not only now but in the future also you need to have ethereum because that coin is the most pitential coin.

you are right, however the situation is now that ethereum has the potential to grow back. a large community and a very broad market, this can be a quick way to grow prices in the market.
I think, both are equally good. I'm holding both. For TRON, currently the price is significantly increasing and is good for long-term holdings. Divide your funds 50 - 50% to purchase eth and tron. You'll get nice profite, why i said like that ?? Because i tried it and it proved.

i am new to this. bought some TRX last week and staked it. Now in my wallet under tokens i see some BitTorrent (BTT). That means i own those already or I have to buy/redeem that somehow? thx

Buy some TRON and keep am very sure you will be getting some BTT airdropped to your wallet plus atleast its cheap like crazy and is likely to hike up the CMC charts before the years ending so is really a good bet if you ask me

I think ethereum is much better than Tron, it's a wonder why people are interested in Tron, what good is the project, if we speak ethereum, of course ethereum has the capacity in the crypto world, so buy eth 
well, for the popularity problem I think ETH is indeed much better, even ETH is a rival of bitcoink when the price goes up. however, in the type of investment or usability, I think, both have different potentials. but, I also chose ETH on this issue. 
TRON its a good option too for your investment, because their mainnet already reales and most of cryptocurrency community really like the Tron market. More stable and bring a good profit.
