I like the quote on page 13 of the criminal complaint (http://www1.icsi.berkeley.edu/~nweaver/UlbrichtCriminalComplaint.pdf).
"Bitcoins are not illegal in and of themselves and have known legitimate uses."

lol

The only legitimate use of bitcoin is to buy overpriced junk at online bodega shops.

So...

Any word as to why the SR camel is on the background of the seizure notice?

"seized 3.2 million worth of bitcoin"

How would that have happened? Why isn't that money stored in safe cold storage?

Never been to SK, but I think this will turn out to be money in customer accounts / wallets as well as some temporary storage for recent transaction fees.

so is it confirmed bitcointalk admins turned him in basically? in regards to gave his gmail account from his forum post?  thats really shitty to do IMO knowing you are risking the safety of many forum users

Don't know about that...the alleged "hitman" incident was from March of this year, months before they seized his server.

That changes my opinion somewhat. I'll still reserve judgement until more info comes out. It's not wise to believe the government's story on first hearing, though it does look like his hubris brought him down.

I doubt they would have just made something like that up to help their case

I don't share your doubt about American LE. Wink

I think it would be interesting to see the 3-7 days before in terms of traffic as compared the 3-7 days after the shutdown.  That might give some idea of the number of transactions.  I suspect it wasn't a large percent of them, but who knows for sure.

How big part of bitcoin transactions were SR related?

Someone needs to start working on the Hollywood movie of this story. That kind of publicity can only be good for Bitcoin.

If they had the hard drive they most likely had the key to operate the site and thus access to that information.

Which also means that his words about hiring a hitman could be forged in order to screw him to the wall harder and remove support from the Bitcoin community.

What next, Craig Newmark (craigslist.org) going down for conspiracy to commit everything but murder?
i am not sure that is the same thing, SR had categories for drugs. it was intentional. Craigslist has people abuse it and go against their policies. totally different.

Yeah I call bullshit on this hitman stuff, he does not look like the sort of person who would put hits out on people. Probably a smear campaign to make him out to be a hardened criminal rather than an business man.

Seriously, the owner ordering assassinations is fucked up. Not cool, not okay. I am not a drug user, although I think people should be free to make their own decisons however murder is not acceptable. This guy was a bad guy. Bitcoins "Walter white".
