I think social media is the second tool that everyone and companies should use to introduce themselves and their products so that they can be known by many people with a wide reach. Yes, In the past, social media platforms were mainly used by the general public or run as a hobby. Now, it has become a place for businesses to advertise their products and services, and in some cases, even market their business. What's more, they do it everywhere on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and others so as many people as possible can see their offerings. Whatever the end goal, I think social media is at least valuable as a research tool and it works well for businesses, but not necessarily for users. for me, social media is both (a place to do business and also to socialize). I sell women's accessories and 80% of my sales happen because of the activities that I share on social media, even though at the beginning of starting a business, it was my closest friends who helped me by posting the items I sold on their social media. Many of my old friends are also my regular buyers. without a social media presence, I'm sure my sales wouldn't be what it is today.

Facebook themselves have been running their own internal advertising platform for well over a decade now and make a lot of money by allowing advertisers to target certain niches. If you get an effective advert blocker then you should be able to avoid the worst of it, but in another way - these platforms need at least some sort of baseline revenue generating model to offer their services for free.
