Interesting, its funny how social media has changed from its initial concept. My understanding
now is that the socialising part of a lot of what is happening is content consumers are
socialising with content creators. There are big business opportunities in social media but they
are heavily reliant on consumers.

Its true though that the social media concept isnt entirely healthy, it often isnt really fully reflective
of what is real.

People nowadays find that business grows faster when being advertised on social media or products being sold online. We all find ways to survive the inflation crisis and online businesses are the best way to deal with it. For facebook yes but for i.g and twitter, not really. I guess that's because many people uses facebook but in facebook, they have this section called marketplace. That's a more appropriate place to place your business. There are buy and sell groups as well, that can be found inside the platform. This was mainly used before by business minded people before those marketplaces were invented.

Facebook is not only for business but you can still socialize with your friends, family and even strangers. The reasons that you state are right. Those are the reason on why many people are now doing business in social media but the covid 19 is what contributed a lot for this.

This happened a long time ago and is hardly a new trend. Where people congregate there is the opportunity to make money and there are many ways that will be utilized. Ranging from genuine adverts that are built into the social network sidebars or feeds, groups that are set up with the ability to sell products within them or just downright subversive & manipulative marketing which is a form of astroturfing. The worst kinds are fake review type situations where they do not make it clear that they're advertising a product to their "followers". It has never been easier to start an online business, but social networks have to walk a fine line because if the place starts looking too spammy then users might start to gravitate elsewhere.
