Wenger was a brilliant manager, and while I know the narrative really turned on him in his last few seasons, but he's one of the best managers to ever manage in the Premier League era, and I'll stand by that word.

I had high hopes for Arteta, and he did pretty good for a few seasons, at least securing a spot in the Europa on an annual basis.  Sadly the club has been in a steady decline the last few years, and I've lost confidence in Arteta.  Oh, how nice it would be to see a brilliant young manager take the reins.

Oh man guys, what a bummer. Another special KO'd out of the water as Leicester Wolves couldn't score in Half Time, how sad.

That's big bummer.  It was looking like we were going to win that one, would have been amazing.  Kudos to Sportsbet.io for giving us that one, it was a lot fun.

1 point for CORRECT score.

I think you're right about getting 1.5 points, but I think you made a typo in the quoted text above.  You get 3 points for predicting the correct score, and only 1 point if you predict the correct outcome (i.e. correct match winner.)

AND we were 1 point shy of BlackJack for those following. Ah well.

@Welsh: Agreed. It's so tricky for a young player and talent. To have the right club to nurture that talent without burning them out, and to have the right manager to hone that skill plus the right teammates to bring that all out. I think there were too many superstars and egos at United, which is why I'm also not sure Sancho made the right call. Super talented, but I think he needs protection (I always think, for example, of how Moyes protected Rooney before unleashing him, that was underestimated).

Arsenal will do better, don't worry. Saka's going to have a blast this season. Taking risks in Superbru doesn't really reward you though, but I'm glad United went crazy with the scoreline, I took Leeds and lost my precious lead heh.

@NotATether

It's still quite simple. You get 1.5 points for a CLOSE score only 1 goal away OR 2 goals away but correct goal difference. 1 point for CORRECT outcome. Nothing else in between:)

For example, if the score is 2:1
You get 1.5 points for 3:1 or 2:0 (for being 1 goal away) and also for 1:0 or 3:2 (right goal difference but 2 goals away).
Every other correct win outcome gives you only 1 point.

Or maybe I'm not understanding what you mean after all =)

@NotATether not sure how your scoring works? It's fairly simple. 3 points for exact outcome, 1.5 if your score is 1 goal out OR 2 goals out but correct goal difference. 1 point for any other right outcome.

Those numbers weren't calculations for the scoring, but for the "closeness".

I think partially correct gets less closeness than the wrong outcomes and exact doesn't give you any closeness, but these are from my head since I haven't checked yatty89's closeness yesterday (the only person who got partial right last night)

It’s really crazy seeing Arsenal decline over the years.  A lot of people thought that it was Wenger who held the club back, me included.  Lol.  But the truth was it was Wenger who made the squad overperform and finish top 4 almost every year.  Wenger in!  Lmao.  But yeah the problem was already there since Wenger.

Anyway Brentford also played with a bit more intensity and had won the 50/50’s a tad more.  So credit to them.

It's brilliant if you ask me. Wenger was a brilliant manager, and while I know the narrative really turned on him in his last few seasons, but he's one of the best managers to ever manage in the Premier League era, and I'll stand by that word. His transfer shenanigans might have been quite funny at times, but it generally worked out for him securing that fourth. I believe it was a meme that Arsenal would literally always finish fourth. I bet Arsenal fans would pay good money to finish fourth these days.

Also, Burnley screwed me over one minute into their game. I predicted a 0-0 draw, and I had Liverpool at 3-0 later in the day for a return of 247k. I had a few matches from the Euros which I had already won on the accumulator. Although,  I don't mind that they screwed me due to not actually expecting it to come through, but I was looking forward to having that intense feeling watching that game whenever you've got big money riding on it, and they ended that within a minute. Bastards. I was proper hoping that the push on Brighton's player was going to overrule the goal, I may or may have not called the ref a few things Cheesy.

I do have another accumulator running, but Everton are screwing me on that at the moment. To be fair, it's my fault for actually thinking they'd do well Cheesy.

My wild prediction that Brighton, Crystal Palaca and Burnely will drop.
Burnley, and Sean Dyche have mastered beating the drop. So, I think they'll survive. I think Crystal Palace are due to go down, and I agree with Brighton.

2nd goal for Brentford...Arsenal's "defence" looking like a 11th division amateur team even though they paid 50m for ben white

guys, ELI5 why is arsenal so shit? who else is gonna join them in the battle to avoid relegation this season?
New season, same old Arsenal, you can always count on them to play like shit away from home. Granted they were missing Auba and Lacazete so some problems in attack should have been expected but it was their defense that let them down this time around. They looked comical in couple of situations. I liked Smith-Rowe and Tierney from Arsenal today, rest of the team was nowhere to be seen. Toney is a beast in the air and Mbeumo looks like serious trouble to contain when he has ball in his feet. Looking forward to see more from Brentford.

I was sure Brentford is gonna score so I picked both to score for this game and then Arsenal goes and ruins my 5x multi.

@Welsh what's your take on Daniel James, I keep waiting for him to explode but feel like every season passing he's not going anywhere. Harsh?
I've had high hopes for him for a number of years, however it does seem like his career is starting to stagnate a little bit. I didn't want him to move to a Premier League team so soon, I feel like he needed a lot more game time than Manchester United of all teams could provide. I feel like an extra season in the Championship, and then moving to a lower/mid team in the Premier League would have been better for his development.

Even when playing for Wales, he has shown some fantastic ability, and shown that there's quite clearly potential in him, but he has probably still been a little disappointing. From a Wales national point of view, it was incredibly exciting when he first came onto the scene, because of course we all want to eventually replace Gareth Bale, and he's been the closest we've had. However, I think most Welsh fans will likely agree, that was wishful thinking from us.

I honestly think the best move for him, is out of Manchester United to a team where he will get more game time, but also where he isn't surrounded by quality players, and instead can steal the limelight. I think that's when you'll see him at his best. At the moment, he's stagnating, and with the wages, and the fee Manchester United would demand, I don't see him getting a move which is frustrating from a Welsh stand point of view.

I don't tend to watch many Manchester United games for obvious reasons, but I don't think its the right place to be for his development.

I did back Brentford, and I didn't even hedge them in this one. Picked 2-0, and they were in my parlay yesterday (I just ruined it by adding Monaco to it eff me). I know I said this season I'm going to learnt to not keep backing the underdog but this was only a 45/10 team, and yeah, remember Arsenal last season? Betting against them would win you a lot of money over the season and it looks like they're same old, same old.
Fair play, I knew it in my heart that Brentford would come out attacking, and beat Arsenal. However, I opted for the "safe" bet of Arsenal. I've watched quite a bit of Championship games with Swansea, and Cardiff playing there, and I knew just how good Brentford are. I think I need to start taking a little more risks in my predictions.

we can sh*t on Pogba's defensive skills all we want but, god damn is he absolute top class when he's feeling confident. Those first touch assists,, sensational performance

They looked comical in couple of situations.
i like that word. "Comical". perfectly sums up their defending last night

It's a brilliant start for Utd. Leeds would like to forget this match. Most of all, they have regretted the equalizer 🤣

Leeds to beat Man United today?

Superboost active right now (you can use in live betting and can get above 6/10 on this). I took it early at just below those odds anyway and parlayed with Liverpool to I should be happy tonight haha. #nojinx
Well, if you are that sure go place another bet on Leeds now, odds should be much better since united just scored Smiley
Good, fast paced game, I feel like we will see few more goals in this one before final whistle. United is better but Leeds had a couple of promising attacks as well.
I hope not I have 1-0 predictions in the pool so best thing is the score stays the same.
When I saw the lineup for United I have seen that they lacked a bit in the offensive side.
And then Leeds scores .
I guess you are right this game still wide open and goals could be coming from both sides.
And then Greenwood scores for United.
It reminds me of their first game last year where Hammered Leeds 6-2.
Shit Bruno scores again.
I need to get off three goals scored while writing this.

I'm a hedger, in general, but yeah, I do like doubling down but skipped this option altogether. Leeds is aggressive as usual but with Sancho still on the bench and Pogba and Fernandes actually looking sharpish, I think they were the better team all first half long. James really ought to have tested the keeper on 35th min though, and it was tame from him again a minute from HT. @Welsh what's your take on Daniel James, I keep waiting for him to explode but feel like every season passing he's not going anywhere. Anyway. Will be very happy to have more goals from both sides though, we still got some important Specials in play.

I don't mind you (Sojourner) to get points. If we have a season with upset matches most of the time, then you will be the one who will have top score LOL. You and HHampuz (if I am not wrong) are the one who always go with unusual picks all the time. I guess you feel thrilled by doing that 😂

Awesome of you to say, I've resolved not to always go for upsets this season but I honestly would have thought more people would bet on Arsenal to disappoint as they so frequently do.

It's the thrill for sure, but also the value in odds (which of course doesn't make sense in Superbru scoring). I always think most EPL teams on any given day can beat any other team so when you see 10/1 and above, you feel the value coursing through your veins haha;)

I'm really glad we got 43 players so far, so it's quite close to the turnout of the previous season. The first game went very badly for almost all of us, but it doesn't mean anything, and I believe it's always hard to predict the outcomes in the first few rounds, but it gets better as we see how teams actually tend to perform during the season, not how they're supposed to perform hypothetically. Hopefully, we'll see more reasonability today, at least with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Good luck, everyone! Many games to watch today, many points to gain.

Now I'm just 9 games away from £22,000 (in case you're new to the pool, there's a cash prize from Superbru for 9 or 10 exact picks in a Match Week). It's ridiculously difficult to win of course but hey.
Looking for perfect emoji but let's have this 🤓 for now

PS: Responding to cygan here
Game 1:  22'
Game 2:  22'

it looks like our girl has had the right touch with the 22 minute of the first game. Wink
Indeed ☺️
This was my third try in this thread. First I had two different minutes for the matches, OP sent me a PM. Realized I need to change my time. So went with 21 minutes for both, but then checked hilariousandco already had 21 minutes, so went with 22 for both.

A friend of mine was backing the Brentford win. Should've listened. As I said in the PL thread there's always crazy upsets at the beginning of the league. Leeds to beat Man United today?

If anyone still wants to play just message me. Only one game has been played so far and it was a huge upset where everybody but two players lost all points so there's no real disadvantage to starting a little late.

I had Arsenal as a draw as I thought Brentford is going to play strongly in their opening premier game in the Premier League but didn't think that Arsenal would not be able to get a draw out of this game. There are other games today in the Premier League so plenty of room to improve guys.

New season, old Arsenal Smiley. Congrats everyone with season start!
We have 43 players on this pool, slightly less than last season, but still, not bad number. And only 2 predicted Brentford win. Well, seems that in season start we still have expectations that Arsenal can't be so bad Cheesy.
I followed Brentford in Championship last season and it's very interesting team. I was disappointed that they didn't got promoted last season. I expect that they are going to stay in EPL. Maybe they aren't as good as Leeds, but still, they can be somewhere in 15th place.
My wild prediction that Brighton, Crystal Palaca and Burnely will drop.

I kinda suspected Brentford would win all along but two things that held me back was 1) literally everyone else chose Arsenal so there's the risk of falling behind everyone (instead of just buwaytress and yatty89  Grin) and 2) this is their first-ever game in this league, so it was risky teeing them up although they did do exploits against Arsenal previously in the FA cup (or maybe it was in the EFL cup).

We have a rare opportunity to see how closeness works before the other matches start.

0-2 results got 0 closeness (I think this is correct goal difference at work)
1-3 results  got 1 closeness
1-2 and 0-1, and 1-3 results got 1.5 closeness

Finally the worst results for this round are 1-1 which got 2 closeness.

So goal difference comes into play here.

If you're unlucky and just "flip" the score then it doesn't cost you any points (Remember that lower is better). Correct goal difference gives you +1 closeness, anything else that represents the opponents winning gives +1.5 closeness and draws are the worst and will give you +2 closeness.

In the last pool, 3rd-5th place were all tied with closeness so it'd be helpful to know how scoring works and what Superbru doesn't tell you, no?  Roll Eyes

Nothing new with Arsenal this season again and awful play by them . Arteta is a really bad manager and i think he should have been sacked a longtime ago. Even missing Auba and Lacazzete they should have played much better against a newcomer in the league. Arsenal just became a middle place team
