I'm speaking more long-term. Spain was the best in the world, all of the top clubs were looking for Italian players not so long ago and Croatia was everybody's dark horse with our midfield trio.
Spain is now far from the best, Italy has 30 decent players to pick from but no gamechangers and Croatia's midfield trio lacks the legs to repeat the success of the previous tournaments.
They are still really good teams, don't get me wrong. It's just my opinion that both Italy and Spain were a lot stronger 4 years ago.
Agree with this perspective, even if I'm looking in from the league angle. Spain was the talent pool from the days of Liverpool's Rafalution, to tiki-taka Barca, also from the view of "best football" it was hard to argue, personally. Just the most attractive style.
Italy also did themselves favours in the last decade, shrugging off negative football and at club level at least, you were seeing the rise of Atalanta, Napoli, Roma -- powering past the old guards of the Maldinis and Chiellinis.
On the flip side, I'm liking Netherlands in general as the successor to Croatia's dark horse status, almost as if they were taking back total football -- VVD playing as striker a tournament ago, fresh modern strikers who like the ball at their feet (ignore Weghorst).
Should also mention here I think the Scandinavian and Nordic status as small heavyweights is also in decline. Icelandic heroes of a tournament ago (yes, they just beat England) are today's part-timer Norwegians who couldn't even qualify with Haaland. Says a lot only Denmark represents those regions now.
