This seems like a terrible idea to me, the Olympic Games are very expensive as the number of facilities that need to be built is very high due to the number of sports and athletes that go to compete, this is not like the soccer world cup in which if the country already has a decent league they could make do by building just one or two stadiums and modernize the rest, for what I have read most Olympic games from an economic standpoint are a loss and that is with spectators, if they are really thinking of going through without spectators I do not even want to imagine the size of their losses.

That's true. Olympic games cost billions of USD in expenses. And the countries hope for long term impact from the games, in the form of increased tourist inflows and better infrastructure facilities. However in case the foreign visitors are not allowed, then a large part of these gains will be lost. Japan is having a stagnant economy for almost two decades now, and they were hoping for a boost in the form of Olympics.

By the end of the month, we maybe will have the official statement but the idea is to do the summer games with no foreign spectators

What do you think?

I think is a bad idea for them but hey their vaccine's plan is so bad, right now they vaccinated only 0.05% of the population.

I guess it boils down to Japan having a history side-effects on vaccinations, so they are very conservative and probably waited for more positive results of clinical testing first before getting those vaccines. And as a result they are late in acquiring it as compare to more developed countries such as US and others.

Hopefully, then can get it on time and would love to see fans watching the Olympics.

Another factor that played its part here is the low number of deaths in Japan. As of today, the death toll in Japan from COVID 19 stands at just 8,299 (and that is despite having one of the most elderly populations in the world). Compare this to 268,568 deaths in Brazil which is having a similar population. I guess the law abiding nature of the Japanese population played a large part in preventing new infections and deaths. They always go out wearing masks and maintain social distancing unlike the majority of the other nations.

Wow, I didn't knew that Japan have such poor vaccination resukts so far. Many less developped countries are far ahead them. But there still few months left until Olympic games, they still can reach better results.
Olympics without foreign spectators is better than no Olympics at all. Though, I don't know Japan policy, maybe they can let already vaccinated people from abroad to watch Olympics.

Japan is a laggard as far as vaccination is concerned. The government signed contracts with various vaccine manufacturers after a lot of delay, and that is the reason why hardly anyone got the vaccines till now in Japan. In the United States, they have administrated 28 doses per 100 people. And in Japan the figure is 0.05 per 100. On top of this, the public mood in Japan is also vehemently against holding the Olympic Games.

Just a few minutes back, there was a statement from Yoshiro Mori (the head of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics organizing committee). In a speech to the parliament, Mori made it clear that the Olympics would be held irrespective of the status of the COVID 19 pandemic in Japan. Thomas Bach (head of the International Olympic Committee) had made a similar statement a few days back.

So right now, I would say that there is a 95% chance of the games going ahead as per the updated schedule. However, many of the participating countries are likely to skip the event, or may send a smaller contingent due to the pandemic.

The paper for Italy is now ok.

Italy will be with their flag and their anthem to the Summer Games, I don't know why they always wait the last day.  Roll Eyes

The bigger concern is with the hosts (Japan). There is still a lot of opposition in Japan against hosting the Olympic Games. it is perfectly understandable, as Olympics would mean tens of thousands of individuals traveling to Japan from more than 200 different nations. At a time when the pandemic is showing no signs of slowing down, conducting such a huge event is going to be very difficult. According to recent opinion polls, more than 80% of the Japanese public believes that the Games should be either cancelled or postponed.
if the virus continues spreading and doesn't show any sign of slowing down I agree with the Japanese public even with the vaccine currently being distributed around the world. the health and safety of the athletes and the citizen of the hosting country should be prioritized.

anyway, for those who might be interested regarding the poll here's an article about it https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/01/11/national/tokyo-olympics-poll-coronavirus/

Florida has offered to host this year's Olympic games, in case Japan is unable to do so.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2021/01/26/olympics/florida-olympics-tokyo/

Quote
Florida’s chief financial officer on Monday told the International Olympic Committee that the state would be happy to host the Olympics Games amid speculation that current host Japan may back out. Jimmy Patronis sent a letter to Thomas Bach, the head of the IOC, “to encourage you to consider relocating the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo, Japan to the United States of America, and more specifically to Florida.”

I understand that the Japanese officials are reluctant to host the mega sports event, which would mean tens of thousands of athletes and support staff arriving in that country. But Florida is not doing that well currently, with ballooning cases of COVID 19.

Italy has 24 more hours to give to CIO new papers or will be excluded from the Summer Game.

There are some issues between Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The latter has said that they will prevent the Italian national flag/anthem in the 2021 Olympics, if CONI is unable to sort out the concerns related to governmental interference. According to the IOC, CONI's autonomy is threatened by repeated interference from the government.

If I'm not mistaken, the decision to impose sanctions on the Italian National Olympic Committee is due to be announced this week.

Is it just me, or is it just that lately we are seeing more and more politics interfering with sporting events? Russian athletes are already performing without the national flag, now Italian athletes are under attack... I don't see the point in this...

Even though many people write that the vaccines will still be fine, I just don't know. we will get a completely different Olympic Games than in recent years. In Japan it can also be very hot, that will certainly play a role.

We are still 8 months away from the start of the Olympic Games. That gives enough time to vaccinate almost everyone in the world, who are willing to do undergo vaccination. The news from the vaccine front is that Moderna has already made the application for authorization of its vaccine to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Pfizer and others are likely to follow suit. So in all probability, mass vaccinations may start within a few weeks from now.

the amount of money they spent for infrastructure alone will be billions and cancelling the Olympics entirely will not be an option.
Cancelling the Olympics will be a huge loss for Japan as they have spent billions building all the infrastructure but things are not clear on how they are going to proceed with the event.

Already postponing was a huge loss. Since Japaneses are so perfect in planing they already sold most of apartments where contestants will seep. Since games should be months ago at this time new owners of apartments already planed to move in. So now since games will be next year they will have to live for a year somewhere else. This games should be somewhere in Balkan and they would build a infrastructure a year after the plan so right on time Smiley
just to clarify are you saying that the new owners of the apartment built for the Olympics will have to live somewhere else or just until the Olympic is over? I am curious how much the apartment and what compensation the new owners will get since they won't be allowed to live in the apartment they bought for a year.

do you have a source for this? I'd like to read the full story.

Talk of this was when decision for Olympic postponing was decided months ago. I am sure is not hard to google and find.  As the plans was at this moment Olympics should be over and apartments where athletes will live should be already in hands of new owners. I have no ideas how they solved that problem. Maybe they sold them cheaper or they got them substitute apartments for a year. But such problem can happen only in Japan where they have all pre-planed for years in advance.

Warm climate is always preferred when compared to cooler climates, as it slows down the spread of COVID 19. As you might have noticed, the start of winter season in the northern hemisphere is almost synonymous with the second or third waves of the pandemic, in countries such as the United States, Spain and the United Kingdom. As of now, we can assume that the games will be a success.

I remember reading in an article somewhere that they can continue the Olympics with or without a vaccine but with only a limited staff and audience. so yeah, they plan to continue the Olympics in 2021 and the only reason why they postponed it in 2020 is because of the Covid fear and advice of health experts. also, the schedule has been made and the Olympics will start on July 23 next year and will end August 8 in the same year. (information can found on google search)
The Olympics will continue as scheduled without much audience and those tickets sold will be VIP tickets with very large sum of money. Not sure whether we will have a complete vaccine during the games but i am sure they will be implementing really strict testing and everything will take place in a bubble and the revenue will be earned by the telecast.
