I read in the news that at the Olympic Games, Covid-19 was found on the team of Czech Republic.  Now, apparently the whole team will be removed from the competition.  This is generally very offensive for athletes who have been preparing for a record for 5 years, but it does not work out.
There are also losses of athletes due to doping, but this is a common thing in recent years.
And of course, as discussed here above, universal vaccination cannot guarantee the complete absence of the virus in athletes.  Statistics say that there are exceptions and also the possibility of getting sick.
Alas!
Olympics are a great holiday.  But this time some kind of sad...

12 hours-ish at the start with a lot of new Covid cases, was to hard vaccinate them all?  Huh

There are two issues here. First one is that many of the athletes refused to get vaccinated (Michael Andrew, swimmer from the United States is an example). The Japanese authorities haven't made vaccination mandatory for all the athletes, although they encouraged them to get vaccinated with free Pfizer shots. And secondly, most of the athletes who have tested positive for COVID 19 so far has been those who have been previously vaccinated. Vaccine only reduces the chance of getting the infection. It doesn't eradicate that risk. For example, recent data from Ohio showed that 29 individuals who have been vaccinated fully had died of COVID 19 (in percentage terms, 0.0005% of the fully vaccinated population).

Wow, Brazil is thrashing Germany. Richarlison with a 1st half hattrick, he's really looking great recently. He'll probably look for a transfer out of Everton soon.
Looking at the lineups - not really unexpected though. Brazil team looks much stronger and is among the best ones on the tournament. Spain is by far the best looking one though, their Olympic team includes some of the players from the Euros as well (Pedri, Oyarzabal, Olmo, Torres, Simon and Garcia).
When the first half was going on, it seemed that Brazil would arrange a big defeat for Germany and could easily score another couple of three goals. One one-on-one exits with the goalkeeper were consistently arranged by Germany in defense due to defective passes and too high a line-up of defenders because of which Brazil got one-on-one exits with the goalkeeper. But in the second half, Germany unexpectedly won back two goals and the game could well have come to a draw. Probably, the Brazilian national team calmed down too early because of the easily developing match and the advantage of one player due to the removal of a German player, and Germany, on the contrary, shook itself off after the break and shook off the excess excitement.

Track & Field starts next Friday 30th July. It’s probably what I’m looking forward to mostly out of the whole games.
I love the big events like 100m 200m 400m 800m 1500m 3000m 10000m.

not sure what you're trying to point out is but I am just using boxing as an example. besides my point is, not knowing the overall result when watching a recorded match of any sport can still bring the feeling of watching a live match(at least for me).

It is sad to see that athletes of this level have to abandon the Olympic games, so many years of preparation, a single goal and just vanish like that.
yeah, it's unfortunate to see dreams be crushed just like that. although there are will be another Olympic there is no guarantee that the same athlete who was able to qualify for this year's Olympic will be able to qualify in the future.

This year IIHC and European football championships were boring. Cant explain why. Maybe they were boring to me only, maybe this is due to covid restrictions and partly we are used to see sports "behind closed doors". I hope that Summer Tokyo 2020 wont disappoint me.

I will try not to miss Athletics (just to find out who is the fastest runner right now and did he manage to beat Bolts record), Swimming (I miss Phelps), Boxing/Judo/Wrestling - just to check who I will next in UFC Cheesy

Brazil is defending the title from the last games, the team they beat in the final was no other than Germany. Brazil won 6-5 on penalties. Over-23 players are Santos, D. Carlos and Dani Alves

For a second I had read Dani Alves and R. Carlos  Grin.
Some updated for Football even if it is not the real football with the top players.

Spain only 0-0 with Egypt, and France is losing 2-1 with Mexico.

Haha, Roberto Carlos is a manager for a long time. Time pass too fast.
Richarlison finished the job in first half with a nice hat-trick. They also missed a penalty. Brazil is playing like they are too focused on that gold medal. I can see them in final if they keep up with this performance. My other favorite is Spain but they couldn't beat Egypt today, kinda confusing.

Germany - Brazil U-23 football match starting soon. I already miss some football and will probably take a look at this one. Germany's 3 senior players are Max Kruse, Maximilian Arnold and Nadiem Amiri - Amiri is a player I will track a bit.

Brazil is defending the title from the last games, the team they beat in the final was no other than Germany. Brazil won 6-5 on penalties. Over-23 players are Santos, D. Carlos and Dani Alves but a lot of good young players are in the team. The main star will be Richarlison, but players to watch are for sure Martinelli, Antony and Reinier, as well as a few already established ones - like Douglas Luiz, Cunha and Guimaraes.

good tip for Brasil, Richarlison scored three in first half, and Brasil is 3:0, with penalty missed, they are trashing Germany, similar to Germany have them trashed in Rio world cup
Argentina is down in first match, 0:2 with Australia, which concludes all surprises in first round, Spain, France

could Japan win in the end, there is no goals, South Africa is playing a bus-match, all on their half, and Japan is fairly good at the moment

I don't understand this. How they can start any of the disciplines before the official start of the Olympics? The Olympic Games starts from tomorrow (23rd July), but from what I can see, the football tournament started two days prior to that. And it is supposed to end by 7th August (one day before the official closing of the Games). One reason may be that too many teams are taking part. In the men's competition, a total of 16 teams are competing and the group phase alone will stretch for more than a week.

The reason is even this, the modalities that have many teams and have a large number of matches, and yet each game takes longer, usually starts 1 or 2 days before.

Usually it's just football, and this year baseball – which makes its first entry into the Olympic games.

USA women soccer team lost versus Sweden and this is big surprise.

No doubt it's a big surprise.

You have to watch sports events live. Else, the excitement won't be there. What is the point in watching a game, if you already know who is the winner?
I've watched a lot of recorded boxing matches. as long you don't know what the score is or who the winner is, watching a recorded game can feel the same as the live one. but most of the time there will be someone who'll spoil it for you or you will accidentally hear, read, or see it on a news.

Boxing is a different game altogether. The score-lines may or may not correspond to the actual performance. One good example is the first match between Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin. Out of the three judges, Dave Moretti scored 115-113 in favor of Golovkin, while Adalaide Byrd scored 118-110 in favor of Álvarez. How can two judges have such different scorecards, when they are watching the same game? So in boxing, the winner of the game may not always be the one who gave the best performance.

I wonder how they will handle the increasing case of athletes getting infected in the athlete village. I remember reading a week ago that an athlete and 5 staff tested positive to covid and the most recent I've read is that 3 athletes were recorded to have been infected.

The time zone will be the most complicated of these Olympic games, to be able to keep up in Europe.
To watch the competitions, we have to be awake at dawn. Well, when it's the other way around, they suffer from the same problem.
I mean that is just a sacrifice people would have to make if they really want to watch the Olympics live.

In the case where I live the Olympic games, they will have a very large impact on the schedules, since they will usually always be at dawn, because it is GMT + 9, it is somewhat complicated, but this event is worth seeing at any time, It is speculated that these will have a great impact because they may be the most popular Olympic games in all of history.

In these games there are casualties of athletes that have hurt a lot, such is the case of the athlete Jessie Knight, which here is dedicated to a piece of news:

Jessie Knight among British athletes forced to self isolate in Toyko

Quote
“Initially my heart sank because I thought I was going to be told I had it,” Knight said. “To be honest there was panic. I called my coach straightaway and I said ‘please don’t call my family,’ because I thought they would just go into panic mode too.

“But my coach was like, ‘Stay calm, even if the worst happens and you can’t train, you’re going to be fine’. And she just kept me calm. There was only about a half an hour window where we didn’t really know anything but the British Olympic Association was brilliant. They got us information really quickly. And the good news is all the other athletes have also tested negative too.”

While small games are already played the official opening ceremony will be on the 23rd of July at 10 PM local time with no public in the stadium.

To watch the competitions, we have to be awake at dawn. Well, when it's the other way around, they suffer from the same problem.

Well, the main games like finals will be always in the evening LOCAL TIME so they will be in the morning in the EU, not the best thing but better than having them at the 3-4 AM.

I happen to like to watch it live on TV.
But this year, I'll have to resort to recordings or daily summaries.  Roll Eyes

You have to watch sports events live. Else, the excitement won't be there. What is the point in watching a game, if you already know who is the winner? At least this is the case for me. I hardly ever watch recorded matches (although sometimes I go for 5-10 minutes highlights). Being a resident of India, the timing can't get anymore perfect for me. Most of the disciplines start at around 6am and go on until 8 pm (Indian time). And since I am working from home, I can watch whatever event I like, live on TV.
