It was a brave decision by England, as Australia now needs just 5.58 runs per over to win this match. But then, it was more or less expected. Australia is up 1-0, so England can't afford this match to end in a draw. It is perfectly achievable, if the Australians bat sensibly. But all depends on whether the other 10 batsmen will be able to give at least passive support to Steve Smith or not (reports indicate that Smith may not play today, but if he is needed, then I am sure that he can spare a couple of hours). Can anyone tell me who captained Australia today? Their strategy was appalling, as Nathan Lyon bowled 26 wicketless overs and conceded 102 runs. I thought that they could have given more overs to Cummins, Siddle and Hazlewood.

Right now England is in good position and they can take chance just need to have some aggressive inning from Stoke and Baristrow for next 7 or 8 overs and then give chance to bowlers with full powers still draw is favorite but right now this can create some interest in last few hours.

^Test matches can also have the ODI spirit and now both teams need to buck up. Stokes is playing very well now hitting 4s and 6s so I guess declaring is on their mind and they can't take chances with Australia without putting up atleast 280 runs (now 223). See the run rate now: from 3.0 to 3.23 in less than 3 overs.

Well you have noticed that the lead is now 217. 56 overs remaining.

Let's say England even dared to declare the innings now. Still taking 218 runs is not going to be an easy task for Australia. It's a test match, not ODI. This is a dead Test and there are no way for any team to win :-P

I still have hope to see the match result as England have lost wickets and have 197 runs on the board. Once Stokes is out, no other good batsman will be able to stay on the field for long. Let's say if England manage to make 50 more runs in 15 overs (going by the run rate), Australia will have 40+ overs to chase the runs. Game is still ON!

Yeah. This seriously sucks. Draw for the win. On the other hand, Sri Lanka seems to be a better test match team these days when compared to their performances in other formats.

Lol. This is a crazy idea. It would not be a proper match-up and lead to super over style matches which itself is not the best way to determine a winner. I don't think ICC will ever implement something like this in the future.

Nope seriously it will work. We would have max of 5 players removed from the batting in case 100 overs are lost. ( as in this match case). Since we lost almost 100 overs in the very first day, this means each team can now bat with 5 batsmen only and we would easily have the result by now. Wink

On a serious note, I do not see there will be even any thought about it at all. Weather (Rain, wind, sunshine, cold) is a part of cricket match. May be in the future we can see indoor stadium with a huge roof above so that rain can not stop a match than again we will see balls will not swing much because of less windy surface.

Considering the last day of the play and rain could also hit the match . Most likely it could end up in a tie. If full 90 overs of the match just happen and OZ can take 6 quick wickets of England then they have chance to even win this test match. For me Tie is the most likely outcome of this match and second chance OZ winning it. Very unlikely England winning this test match.
