‘If you pick a guy, you back him for the long term’ – Waugh confident of Warner, Bancroft bouncing back

Ashes 2019: Ricky Ponting implores David Warner to free his mind

Last four innings of David Warner:

1st inning of 1st test: 2 runs
2nd inning of 1st test: 8 runs
1st inning of 2nd test: 3 runs
2nd inning of 2nd test: 5 runs

What's wrong with David Warner? Roll Eyes
Well how many innings?
A team like Australia have unlimited options. Indeed Warner needs to come back very soon or he is very close to lose his position. I hope Smith will be fit to play the third test if not then we will see a disaster from Australian team.

I agree. IMO, if Warner doesn't perform in the next test match of the series, he'll be out.

An interesting overview of Warner's alternatives is provided in the following article:

Australia must drop David Warner

https://www.theroar.com.au/2019/08/18/australia-must-drop-david-warner/

I actually think he should be dropped for the third test match and Finch comes in or they could even have Khawaja open with Bancroft. Australia look weak without Smith so I just hope that he will be right to play in the third test. It was good to see England try and get a result from this match and like some have said if there were 10 or so overs left England most likely would of got the win. I thought that both teams played well in this test match and the draw was the right outcome in the end.

Match drawn! Sad end to an innings that could have been in England's favor. Aussies must be very happy as they escaped a loss but the winner is the rain.
Yes, Match drawn but winner is the rain :-P

Australia was looking broken without Smith. If this test could be 15 to 20 more overs longer then we might see a result in favor of England.

Man! It's stressful now.

5 overs to go but technically England needs only 3 wickets. Cummins batted well in the first innings, I hope he can stay in the pitch till the end with Head.

Yes, we are heading there however Australia lost another wicket. So, technically they are 5 down now. It needs only 5 wicket taking balls to get 5 wickets.

Question is: Do one or two English bowler have this magic spells?

EDIT:
Damn! 5th gone! Technically 6 wicket down. England needs only 4 wickets. Remember Smith is not there.

So a draw? As it's impossible to chase down 135 runs in 12 overs with no Smith. Sad that this match got wasted due to rain. Stokes may be the man of the match and he deserves it.

Night for now guys, laters
Good night.

Match update:

Australia needs 157 runs with 7 wickets (actually 6) remaining and 18 overs left. If Smith was there then I am sure they would try to play a T20 style innings to give it a go for winning but it seems they will not going for this.

Everyone is missing Smith.

Because of Archer's bouncer? i was under impression that he came out okay after that.
Yes was the bounder. And Smith was not feeling well in the morning and possibly not fit for batting.

"I started to feel a little bit of a headache coming on last night, probably as the adrenaline got out of my system," Smith said. "I was able to get a good sleep in, which is somewhat rare for me. But woke up feeling a little bit groggy and with a headache again, so had some tests done and upon some further assessments deemed to be a mild concussion unfortunately.

"We did a test this morning here at the ground, did one last night and results changed slightly and unfortunately that and how I'm feeling have contributed to me being ruled out for the rest of the Test match. Yesterday when I came off the ground the results were normal. I passed all the tests and felt fine, felt normal. I was allowed to go back out and bat, upon discussions with the team doctor and the coach as well. They were both happy and I was comfortable as well, so we were all happy and I was able to go out and continue batting.

"I didn't have any real pain in my neck yesterday when I touched it or when anyone else touched it. Today I do have a bit of pain there, whether that's some swelling or what I'm not sure. Perhaps that's leading to me having a headache and feeling a bit groggy. In regards to the arm, the arm feels pretty good today. It's quite a good bruise I have on it and it's feeling a lot better. The movement I have in it is far greater than I had yesterday and that feels really good."

Guys what happen with Smith? why he's not coming to bat. missed out yesterday's play completely and you guys are not helping me to get updated news from this thread Tongue and i noticed @UmerIdrees giving weirdly strange suggestions  Grin
Smith is injured so he is not going to bat in this innings. Aussia are 3 wickets down but technically 4 (since Smith is not going to bat).

Anyway here we stand, England needs 6 more wickets and Australia needs to survive more 25 overs if they want to draw this match. I do not think Australia will give it any try to win. So, I am not considering this option.

This match is getting even more interesting as as I said earlier, England did declare it and Aussies got less than 50 overs to defend a huge score. If they can get Smith's wicket, the match is won.

England declared it at 258 and made 258 in the first innings as well.

Chances of rain now?

No chance of rain, as per the weather prediction. So we will get the full 48 overs (44 remaining now). Australia needs 254 runs to win, while England needs to take 9 wickets (effectively 8, as Steve Smith may not be able to bat). Right now Usman Khawaja and Cameron Bancroft are facing the raw pace of Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad. From their style of batting, I can see that Australia is no longer trying for a win here. And it is sensible. They are without their best batsman, and scoring almost 6 runs per over on the 5th day is going to be extremely tough, and that too against in-form bowlers such as Archer, Broad, Woakes and Stokes.

Aus must be desperate for the rain now.
They lost their 2nd wicket and I can smell trouble for Australia. Since Smith is not batting means they have no rescuer. Seriously will we see a result in this match. If we do then seems like it will be a thrilling win for England.

Warner was super flop in this Test. What happened to him?

Ah! Smith won't play then who will play? Aus are in trouble. They need about 6 runs per over which seems nearly impossible without Smith. Head is not so capable of a big partnership.

If not rain anymore then we are looking at a very interesting ending of this Test.

Aus must be desperate for the rain now.

If not rain anymore then we are looking at a very interesting ending of this Test. Australia will already lost one wicket and I see they are attacking. If they will lose few more wickets then they will change strategy and will defense obviously.

Let's hope for some twist  and see who wins till the end.

^Test matches can also have the ODI spirit and now both teams need to buck up. Stokes is playing very well now hitting 4s and 6s so I guess declaring is on their mind and they can't take chances with Australia without putting up atleast 280 runs (now 223). See the run rate now: from 3.0 to 3.23 in less than 3 overs.
They are trying to make it an entertaining one. If it works then may be (chances are low) we can see a good ending. To take the lead to 280 runs or 300, England will need to play at-lest more 15 to 20 overs. If they do then Australia will have only 30ish over to chase the run.

Impossible to have a result unless England find themselves taking 10 wickets of Australian in this 30ish over :-P

England declared. Australia need 268 runs in 48 overs. This is achievable in ODI but this is a different game all together.  Can Australia make it ? If they do not lose early wickets, who knows.
Australia can achieve this as they have some good and match winning batsmen but this is last day of test match and we have rain so lest see how they start I can bet for Australia to win because Warner and Smith both need to stay on.
