Well in that case we can take both instances and call them the possible causes. Both extremes of one side, one being too rich and one too poor, try to go into gambling to look for something that could help them. The former want adrenaline, the latter need a life-changing experience. Wouldn't really tell that they're equal, but well the world didn't bring us equally here in the first place anyway. There might be special cases though where people just end up being addicted due to, well, playing it for a long time (and I'd honestly place my bets here most of the time).
