So how did he lose it? Does he still have the hard drive? If so I would suggest not using it, and scanning it with software that restores deleted files.

Iv done the exact same thing although not as much Iv only lost around $2k in Litecoins and around $400 in Bitcoins

I have also gone through the proccess of scaning for deleted files and then done a search for wallet.dat files it bought up 6 walet.dat files and I did manage to get some of my Bitcoin back but I have tried with the other wallet.dat files with Litecoin and it just says they are corrupt. and closes the wallet back down

Many people lost their Bitcoins and back in 2011 no one cared about that because you could buy one Bitcoin with 30 cents.
Losing 103 Bitcoins didn't annoy anyone that's why the number of bitcoins lost is huge, I don't think there is a way to know the exact number.

This guy has lost 103 bitcoins he mined back in 2011 and then lost his wallet dat file similar to what I have done but wow this guy must be gutted the amount of money he has lost compared to me

His Address    166BuLPWHUjqoqiYp5rGE3B5r5AmqgHpoL    Final Balance   103.20832384 BTC

So many people have the same problem and I wonder just how much Bitcoin is stuck not being able to be used Sad

He says "I used to mine Bitcoin back in 2011 and I lost my wallet.dat file (through several stupid moves on my part). It's got approx 103 BTC in it, anyone is welcome to it, I've given up trying."

Sad. It's a lot of money. Sad over 1kk $ I do not know what I would do in this situation ...

You really have to feel for the guy 103 btc is no small amount to be lost forever. This just adds to the shrinking amount of bitcoins out there. I can only hope that he has got back into bitcoin and has some stored safely.

A hypnotist advertised that he helps people recover the cost of lost btc keys for one Bitcoin, (negotiable) I have no idea if it actually works but with 103 coins it's worth a shot

A lot of users are in that situation, where they either forgot the password or the wallet seed or simply do not know where you have taken the back up of the wallet and in my opinion around a million bitcoin are lost forever and the majority of the coins are from the beginnning as it was easy to mine the coins. It is not possible to get those coins and no one can help you in recovering those.

That is right, there are definitely going to be victims like this in every revolutionary invention like that of bitcoin  and the blockchain since many will doubt from the start whiles the few will stay with it and profit later as the technology evolves and so he's not alone as there are several others that have lost bigger amounts of bitcoin and it's a lesson for us all.

Yep think there are quite a few of us who have lost Bitcoins and Litecoins from the early days lol.  There was one guy over here who even went as far as searching the rubbish dumb for a hardrive which he threw out. If he could have found it he would have also been a millionare today.

Hello! It's not good situation but the "consolation prize" is that he buy it with low price in 2011! Such situation could be a catastrophe for him if he lost it when price was 20.000$ in 2017. No need be upset. What a pity that if person lost key that means than he lost all!  Interesting how can be slowed problem with "ghost wallet"?

These stories are indeed sad. Anyway, if Blockchain is what I think it is then this guys is not late to the game, he still has chances to catch up. Maybe not a multi millionaire, but he can make good moneys off of Bitcoin.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/up-to-four-million-bitcoins-gone-forever

It says up to 4 million. So that guy who lost his 103 is another statistics. Really just sad though to see someone lost a lot of money because they either don't believed that bitcoin will skyrocketed or they are just plain stupid and not backing up everything and literally throw their money away.

Can you share more about the story though? Is this a new story or an old one because we have seen a lot of people losing their bitcoins. If will be really good if you can give us a link or something.

This study is nothing more than a shot in the dark. They are estimating the number of lost coins based on the addresses that weren't used for a long time. This means that if you bought your coins 2 years ago and kept them on the same address you're probably treated like a person who lost access, which may or may not be true.
You simply can't assume that coins out of circulation are lost forever. There's no proof for it.

Well as he said stupid moves from his part and that for me explains it all. I think that is the payback, you don't care much about bitcoin and do not take it too seriously back then in 2011, you don't get nothing and don't need to complain that you have lost your wallet now in 2018 that those 103 BTC are worth more than 1 mln dollar.

I am sorry for his loss but there is only one responsible here and is the person who lost his wallet.

It really says something about the security that bitcoin has. EVen with people all around to see your money they can't get to it. ALthough in this case, even the owner. So let's be careful guys!

I think the problem was a lot of us messed about with Bitcoin and Litecoins, Feathercoins in the early days but dident really know what we were doing and compared to today the advice wasent very forthcomming lol

I think there is way more Bitcoins lost than that tbh.  Its a shame there is no way for people with the wallet phasprases to still be able to get access to their old wallets . This sure is a huge problem for a lot of people
