we just slow them down a bit

A bit ?

From what you said , with people making hero members in a day , it seems like the time taken has changed from a day to make a Hero Member to a year and a third. 420 days is more than a small duration.

The current system is pretty good, I don't see a post a day being spammy except in rare cases.

Okay maybe I should use "a lot" instead. Tongue
My main point is, there is IMO no way to really stop account farming and slowing it down is already the best we can do.

And yes, I like the activity system as well.

The account farmers don't work really well IMO.
You kinda stop trusting them when you notice that the hero member who wants to trade a lot has posted only in giveaway threads and random altcoins for a long long time.

That's because you can only get a max of 14 points every two week period. You can get another 14 on the 19th. Read the following for further details on activity: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-definitive-explanation-of-how-activity-works-495948

Interestingly, my activity seems to be stuck. I'm past 20 posts (almost thirty!), waited an hour, and it's still at 14 :/

what is the actual benefit of these titles?

The intent is that you should be able to judge how "regular" a forum member is based on their activity.

The unfortunate side effect is that the quality of the posts on the forum decreases, since many members post garbage in order to score "points" (activity) towards their account. There is even a small market for accounts with activity (probably to perpetuate a scam).

I sometimes find myself posting for the sake of posting. Humans love little achievements, after all. At least I try to stick to off-topic. Smiley

That precisely is why the activity system matters. It should encourage participation, but I feel lurking should also be counted -- just to a lesser degree. Otherwise, those who simply like to read more than they like to write are penalized over time.

Activity decreases post quality compared to what? Before it was just post count, and it was really bad then. Only real issue is account farmers, but that's more related to sig campaigns.

We still have account farmers and account trading now...we just slow them down a bit (IIRC, in the past people could get to hero member by just posting hundreds of posts in one single day)...

I was thinking about a system that offered less "points" per interval (i.e. < 14). I didn't realize that prior it was just posts, so I see the wisdom now.

People might say that activity doesn't matter, but honestly though I'd love if the forum software was more flawless in general. I hope the upcoming software is going to fix problems and the devs listen people's requests.

The forum staff listen to all the concerns , and I don't really see any huge problems in the way of a fully functional site.
If you see any obvious flaws , that you would like to be fixed , make a post in the new forum software subforum.

Yup, if you have suggestions feel free to make them. Why would the new forum not fix or improve on this one? I think that's the whole point of it. They seem to have taken on many suggestions from users in the new forum software sub and a lot of them seem to have been acted on or taken on board.

It takes up to thirty minutes to update. You can post on the exact day or anytime in the two week period to get your points, though make sure the new period has actually started with the times in the op.
How long does it take for your forum ranking to update after your activity has risen to the appropriate level?

See the bolded. It updates with your activity.

Let's add all this to the OP , so we don't have more users asking this over and over again. Smiley

As per OP there was an activity update scheduled today :: July 22nd, 2014, 9:06:40 AM

As per https://www.google.com/search?q=gmt+time it is now :: 4:33 PM | Tuesday, July 22, 2014 (GMT)

My activity was and still stuck to 238. May I know what is the blocking or I'm calculating something wrong ?

Your activity won't go up just because you log in your account in a new period.
You need to make a post in order to increase the "time" value in the activity formula.

The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)
