The truth that most Manchester united fans don't want to admit is the club fell off the moment they didn't support their best manager after Sir Alex Ferguson. Sacking Mourinho and backing the players was a huge mistake, it enforces the 'brat' culture that was breeding in the team. So much so that we Ronaldo joined the team, he complained about young players not wanting to take correction and learn.

Manchester United and Ajax both lost yesterday. It may  come as a shock to many fans because Ajax is believed to be a team with strong football culture

I like this quote, I think it's quite revealing that when Man U and Ajax lose, the surprise is that Ajax lose. No-one is surprised that Man U have lost.

Man U have some great individual players, but are not a team. They look disjointed, and rudderless, just a bunch of 11 strangers who happen to wear the same colour shirt. Pit them against a good team, and they will struggle. The answer is probably a permanent rather than temp manager, and then getting in players to fit into a team, rather than just players who are individually gifted but don't fit together properly. I think they can write this season off now, they are out of the Champions League and have little hope of qualifying for next season's competition... Man C, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will take the qualification spots.
The Manchester United team is broken like shattered glass. They need a manager who can pick up the pieces and put them together or replace the glass. I'm beginning to see Ralf Rangnick as a victim here, Manchester United have been falling apart before he came to the club. It is amazing Arsenal who had a bad start to the season made top 4 and Manchester United didn't.

It was such a shocking night for Ajax and Manchester United. I really didn't give any chance to lose for Ajax here. It was like a miracle to me. This is football of course and everything can happen. But Ajax have always seemed to be a very strong team in their home matches. In fact, they played really good here but somehow couldn't score even one goal. Benfica were struggling a lot and didn't find many chances as well. They had only 4 shots in total and 1 of them was on target. And still, they managed to win this by 1-0 and advanced to next round. And as for Manchester United, they were the victim of their defense problems once again and this cost them the Champions League.
Manchester United and Ajax both lost yesterday. It may  come as a shock to many fans because Ajax is believed to be a team with strong football culture but critically looking at the Benfica team, I think they are leveled with Ajax. Moreso, this Benfica were impressive all round. They could contain the Ajax side and score that crucial goal to win the match.

I wonder if Lille can repeat yesterday's success with Benfica today. Although I don't believe Chelsea can lose with a two-goal lead either. As for the second match, I'd like Juventus to win, but Villarreal look just as good. Here the chances are equal and I expect the same minimum score as in yesterday's games, or maybe even a penalty shootout.

Indeed! A Hard Luck!
Atletico won the game however Manchester United truly gave extreme battle.
The energy and want to win was superb. Some of the time you don't have karma however I watched the players truly battling until end. Karma has it's cutoff, they have rode on karma on a few events yet not this time. However, changing managers not the answer to this team building rather a winning team is the big thing and it requires time. I wish Man United will bring in a good defender next season.
Extreme fighting? I don't think it's appropriate to represent Manchester United's performance last night. Manchester United just tried to play well but they didn't manage to create many good chances during the game so they didn't score.

Atletico Madrid didn't win by chance either, but they did everything well with their defense and attack much more organized than Manchester United. Atletico Madrid deserved to win even though they were not the favorites in that match. Atletico Madrid's qualification to the quarter-finals was something that surprised me because they didn't impress in many games. Solid defense and good finishing earned them a win against Manchester United.
Manchester United couldn't play yesterday, for the first time, Christaino Ronaldo didn't have a shot in a UEFA champions league match. Ronaldo was literally invisible. Whilst bunch of United players were average, Frederico Rodrigues was quite outstanding. Overall, Athletico were a far better than Manchester United and are well deserved winners. Same goes for Benfica against Ajax, although most bookmakers favored ajax before the game.

Life, Love and Laughter...
Ronaldo played well against Tottenham, so, Manchester United was able to win. So many people expected Manchester United to win yesterday's match. But United was able to beat Tottenham only for Ronaldo. It is not always possible to win by relying on just one player. Tottenham were able to win against, so the United coach did not change his match strategy. Depends on Ronaldo. Ronaldo did not play well against Atletico Madrid so United lost. This is not surprising. There are a lot of problems inside the United team. This problem will not be resolved until the coach is fired.

I didn't watch the match but looking at the stats, I feel like this is the fault of bad tactics on the part of the manager.  The line up says he played the no. 9 role but why did Ronaldo mostly played at the left flank?  And it seems like he wasn't even drifitng to the middle...  His heat map shows this and his stats says he had zero shots on and off target?

And I was sooo confident my bet for Ronaldo anytime goal scorer at 2.85 would hit.  Lolol.  Cheesy  Sucks cos I don't think it's his fault, just bad tactics as said.

I think it'll be a low scoring affair just like last time but the odds on Atletico seems pretty juicy to me. United does have better quality players and lineup but I can sense a possible upset here. Would be an interesting watch.
Predicted Atletico might win. It was more about how juicy the odds on it and worth the odds the bet was. Paid off. Don't think there'll be any upset today. Chelsea and Juve should be going through into the next round. Juve - Villareal might be another low scoring affair but an interesting watch.

In my memories, I remembered it was Villarreal which eliminated Atalanta in the last match of the group stage by securing the vital 3 points with a victory at the Gewiss stadium. I guess it is time for Juventus to show their home fans that Italian football clubs are also capable of producing good result in the Uefa Champions League, I think there is a high chance for Juventus to beat Villarreal by scoring more than one goal past their opponent today.

I was a little surprised by the results that Ajax got. They played better than Benfica, in fact they were able to control 69% possession throughout the match. Did 16 attempted kicks, but only 2 were on target and even then it didn't result in a goal. The disaster came in the 77th minute after Nunez managed to shake the Ajax goal net and made them have to accept defeat and must be eliminated from the Champions League.

That's a football match, no one can predict who will come out victorious before the final whistle is sounded. Everything can happen even if you control the entire match but if luck is not on our side, we will still lose. like what happened to PSG yesterday, many parties favored PSG as winners but ended up having to lose, even though we all know that PSG is full of star players. And I think that's where the beauty of football is.

Instead of highlighting the front line I'm more interested in highlighting the back line in this case.
they too often allow Atletico's players to attack freely in this case which makes it difficult for them to anticipate when they are close to the goalkeeper area.
The first goal that was disallowed occurred when a quick counter-attack was lucky the referee was still quite observant in this regard.
Renan Lodi's goal also occurred due to the same error that started from a counter-attack that failed to be anticipated properly at first

As I predicted yesterday, Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United. The match was not very entertaining, but that too was expected. But most of all I was surprised by Benfica, I don't think anyone expected them to win in Amsterdam, although Ajax played and looked much better. But I think the curse of Bela Guttman will come true again this season.
I don't know what the definition of entertaining is to you. Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid match was not a dull one. It was entertaining from beginner to the end. Botje teams played good football but Manchester United played better football and dominated from the start to the end of the match. It was really a bad night for them for them not to see the back of the net, even once.

Chelsea football club will join their England counter in the wining stage unlike Manchester United that could not qualify despite playing their best. Chelsea has two goals advantage already and that is enough advantage for a big club like Chelsea.

Chelsea has good advantage from the first leg result from which they can go next. However, what will happen after that and after this season is very vague. Their players don't know, their coach don't know about their future because the club future is uncertain now. The sanction on Russia then Abramovich hurt Chelsea a lot. I hope they will be well after all this chaotic time.
It was an unforeseen consequence where Chelsea had to get a big impact from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, no one knows what the future of this team will be after getting sanctions and several bans, this is very unfortunate because Chelsea is a top team that previously was the owner of the Champions League title.

Chelsea's previous performance was still good for the Premier League match and I don't think it will affect his performance in the Champions League tonight. Chelsea need only a draw to qualify, and that is the most likely thing to think about.

Well played by Atletico - they were well organized after taking the lead yesterday and were a better team overall during the combined 2 legs.
It is another huge blow for United, especially since it doesn't look likely they will qualify for next season's CL.

I was really surprised to see Benfica winning against Ajax though - Ajax was much better in the 1st 90 minutes.

A boring CL day today, I expect most people to watch Arsenal - Liverpool anyway.

Here we are. Atletico Madrid have officially eliminated Manchester United by winning the rematch in Old Trafford by 1-0. It was out of my expectation from this match because I was favouring Manchester United to make it. Now I'm really sure of one thing that Ronaldo won't be staying here after the end of this season. There might be a chance if they manage to qualify for the Champions League by ending in top four in the Premier League. But I don't think that he believes in his team too much now to be successful in the future.

Atletico Madrid never needed to be at their best to beat Manchester United.
The kind of game Atletico Madrid is playing is kind of clear, I have once posted that Manchester United may win but that if they want to win, they have to score up to 2 goals because Atletico do not use to score much goals. Atletico Madrid is good at defence, though the team is not that in form but they still have the Champions League experience. It was not a surprise when I saw Atletico won with just 1 goal difference with Manchester United not able to score a single goal in its own home.
Exactly my point. Playing high possession and dominating football without result in a crucial game like that was unnecessary. I don't know who instructed them to be playing long balls into Atletico Madrid box, it was a tactical blunder. You tried it and noticed it did not work why not try and lure defenders out instead, knowing fully well that Atletico Madrid like to sit in. From the beginning, the approach to the game was wrong. Cristiano Ronaldo was guilty of playing too far away from the box, which rendered him less efficient and less effective. That ended up costing them in front of goal as there was no one else who could take up the role in the team.

I was expecting Manchester United to reach the quarter finals at least. Maybe it was going to be hard but it was quite possible. Manchester United needed to perform nicely to achieve it. But they didn't. Their performance in defense and offense each was not good enough. Atletico Madrid had their usual game plan and got what they wanted from this round of the Champions League. Even though they are not having their best season, they continue on the Champions League successfully.

I actually didn't think Atletico Madrid would be able to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford yesterday. Manchester United looked very promising in the match against Tottenham where they won thanks to 3 goals from Ronaldo. It made me think that Manchester United would win that match against Atletico Madrid, but unfortunately Manchester United's performance was not as expected.
Why not? Athletico Madrid did have a good first leg match and Manchester United fortunately to get 1 point there. Manchester United did not become a stronger team just after a surprising win against Tottenham. Don't forget how bad form they had before that match. And a home stadium is not a big guarantee that they will win against Athletico Madrid.

Quote
For tonight's second leg I think Chelsea will easily qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals after winning the first leg 2-0. Chelsea are the favorites in this match and they will ensure it with a win regardless of whether Lille can score at home. If Chelsea really can qualify, then there are 3 Premier League teams that to the quarter-finals after previously Manchester City and Liverpool.
Chelsea has good advantage from the first leg result from which they can go next. However, what will happen after that and after this season is very vague.
