UEFA has come up with an unusual grouping system that could lead to a "group of death" scenario at Euro 2024. Following last night's matches, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) identified the 21 teams that have secured spots in Euro 2024, including the host team Germany and the top two teams from each of the 10 groups (making a total of 20 teams). The remaining three spots will be determined through the UEFA Nations League.
What's noteworthy is that UEFA didn't seed the teams based on FIFA rankings or their performance in previous Euro finals. Instead, they introduced a peculiar seeding rule, considering teams' performances in the Euro 2024 qualifiers to determine the seedings.
This led to the reigning Euro 2020 champions Italy being pushed down to the fourth seed group because of a lackluster performance in the qualifiers. Other formidable teams in Europe, such as Croatia and the Netherlands, find themselves in the third seed group. Conversely, underdog teams like Albania have been elevated to the second seed group.
The Euro 2024 seeding groups are as follows:
Group 1: Germany, Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England
Group 2: Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Denmark, Albania, Austria
Group 3: Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic
Group 4: Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, three playoff winners from the Nations League
With this seeding outcome, Euro 2024 might witness some challenging groups, with potentially intense matchups between England, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Italy. Similarly, formidable opponents like Croatia (Group 3), Switzerland, and Serbia (Group 4) could pose challenges to other strong European teams.
First of all thank you for sharing this information with us. When it comes to the seeds I can say that even seed 3 and seed 4 are consisting of really powerful teams such as Netherlands, Croatia, Italy and so on.
Turkey have done a really incredible work in the qualifier stage and finished as leader at the same time.
They are doing much better in Montella's management. There have been even some meme videos out on the internet showing the Turkey threat in Euro 2024.
I would also like to see them doing a good job there but let's see. I hope they don't draw very strong teams from seed 3 and seed 4.
