It looks like the German team has a new captain (at least for the next games): Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich.

With Neuer, Müller and Gündogan all out, Joshua Kimmich is set to captain Germany in the upcoming games against Peru and Belgium. Hansi Flick told @kicker: "Usually, the player with the most international caps wears the armband."

For me, it's 100% the right decision: Joshua Kimmich really embodies everything you expect from the captain of the German national team, namely the unconditional commitment to always want to win (which has been a little lost among Germans in recent years). I really hope with him the German team finds back on track. I mean, after the last two tournaments, the German team desperately needs a title once again.

Out of all the players that you mentioned, only Perišić and Kramarić will be in Dalić's consideration to call them up for the UEFA Euro 2024. Lovren already announced that he won't be playing for the national team anymore. Modrić said that he wants to see Croatia winning the Nations League, but I think he'll retire from the national team after that. His dream is to bring the gold medal to Croatia so that's his last opportunity. And Vida is out of the question if you ask me. I think that he didn't play at all in Qatar because Dalić found a replacement for him in Gvardiol.

Hmm.. I forgot about Joško Gvardiol. Yesterday Yussuf Poulsen termed him as one of the best young defenders in the world. Also, he was one of the favorites to win the FIFA Young Player Award (lost to Enzo Fernández in the end). Still, I believe that Croatia will be significantly weakened if all of the senior players are gone. Other players may be replaced, but I don't know how they are going to replace Luka Modrić in mid-field and Ivan Perišić in the attack. Anyway, Perišić will be around for a couple of years more, so that means less headache for Zlatko Dalić.

Croatia is not to be considered a great team by that time but I think 1.5 years is not really that much of a long time to consider all these players gone. At the very least Modric could play here, and I know it would be near impossible for him to play in the world cup, so he will want to leave it after a certain tournament and I do not think that nations league would be that one.

Everyone knows that nations league is just a formal exhibition game for most clubs, they just train together and instead of having friendlies, they play in the nations league, this is why I think Modric will leave after euro cup, because he wants his last cup to mean something.

I am not comfortable with one of the factors within the current Croatian team. There are very few young players and most of the star players are over 30. Dejan Lovren, Domagoj Vida, Luka Modrić, Ivan Perišić and Andrej Kramarić are all in their mid-30s or late-30s. This is like a double edged sword. It gives them an advantage in terms of overall experience. But at the same time, absence of younger players may prove costly while playing against more athletic sides.

Yes, you said it right, on paper Croatia is better than both Wales and Turkey, but Croatia has always had big problems with weaker national teams in qualifying for major competitions.
The qualification for the last European Championship started with a defeat against Slovenia, and the qualification for the League of Nations with a defeat against Austria at home.
After that defeat against Austria, Croatia beat both France and Denmark away from home, so it was once again shown that Croatia always plays the best against the strongest national teams and always has serious problems against weaker teams.
I don't know if this is due to the mentality of the Croatian players, underestimating the opponent or some other reason, but I expect similar problems in these qualifications as well.

BTW, I wouldn't call Austria and Slovenia as weak teams. But I get the point. Both these teams can't be compared to sides such as France. BTW, I am surprised that you have grouped together France and Danmark. The latter are a shadow of their former self and are on a downward slide since the last one decade or so. I won't be surprised if they fail to qualify for the Euro 2024 and FIFA 2026. It looks like Croatia performs the best when they are the underdogs. When they are the favorites, the performance go down.

If they finish within the top 2, then they can qualify for the main tournament. Only other team (apart from Turkey) who can spoil Croatia's chances is Wales. They are one of the most under-rated teams within UEFA and on their day they can make life difficult even for stronger sides such as England and France. But I don't know how they are going to perform this time, especially after the retirement of Gareth Bale. The other teams in that group (Armenia and Latvia) are there just to make up the numbers. During recent times, their quality has gone down and I don't think that they stand any chance against teams like Croatia, Turkey and Wales.

I know than first two spots in the group lead to the final tournament. But my opinion is that it's not the same to finish first or second. Finishing at the first place boosts team's morale and their synergy with the fans. I remember the time when Croatian fans were not so interested in the national team. Then Dalic was appointed as the manager and they started winning strong teams again. Now the stadiums are again full when the national team is playing.

At least on paper, Croatia is much stronger than Turkey and Wales. The other two (Latvia and Armenia) are there just to make up the numbers. And then chances of any upsets are low, because each team will face others two times in the group phase. Even if one of the underdogs win one match by luck, the higher ranked team has another chance to get back at them. In two weeks, Croatia will be playing their first match, against Wales (they will be having the home advantage, since the match is scheduled to be held at the Stadion Poljud in Split). And on 28th they have a tough match, against Turkey.

I would like to know what results the French team should achieve so that you consider this a good achievement. Win several World Cups and European Championships in a row? This is, to put it mildly, a rare event (to win the Euro and the World in a row) and does not at all indicate the weakness of the team. In addition, there is no limit to perfection and you can say about any team that they could perform better. For example, there are also questions for the Golden Generation of Spain  Wink
France still missing to be the winner in UEFA Euro after longer time on 2022 and the best edition on Euro 2016 after lead to final stage before beating by Portugal. But France have good achievement in FIFA World Cup after last two edition success lead to final stage and last edition failed after losing from Argentina.

I have bigger percentage with France get good achievement in Euro 2024 Germany because left one years and team dominance by young players make them easy than other national teams have build it with senior player.
Well, just go back a little further, when Italy won the Euro they didn't go to the World Cup, Portugal when they won the Euro went to the World Cup but they didn't reach the final when everyone expected to see Portugal as a finalist, that's something that didn't happen, what of the Euro is important, but when the World Cup is held things change a lot, there are some players who could have played in the Euro but were not called up for the national team to play in the World Cup, so many things can happen, for me a team Since the French have a lot of history and have very high-level players, that's enough to win any competition.

Croatia is similar to Turkey in that sense. They are known to win against the biggest teams like England and France only to lose the game against some much weaker team. For example, at the start of the Nations league, they have lost the game against Austria 3-0. I don't consider Austria as a weak team, but I think that Croatia is much better team and losses like that should never happen. But everyone has a bad day once in a while. It's better to have a bad day at the start of a competition then in the final game Grin

Sometimes the European Cup is the scene of more exciting matches than the World Cup. France and Germany are among the top teams in tournaments, but Germany has been out of shape lately. Especially after their bad performance in the world cup, they will want to be champions in the European championship.
The 2022 world cup is the most tragic world cup for Germany, as a team of potential champions, but Germany was unable to get out of the group phase and ended up having to go home quickly at that time, I think the current German squad is not qualified and it might be very difficult for them to  compete for the championship, even though they don't have to go through the group phase, the current German squad is no longer as strong as it used to be and I think, the many old players in Germany are the reason for their decreased performance like in the last world cup, if Germany really wants to win it should be Hansi Flick made many improvements to their squad including regenerating players and entrusting more young players to fill the line up later.

I highly doubt that Germany can become the European champion next year. Of course they would love to do it because their country is the host, but wishes are one thing and reality is another.

Ideally Croatia should be able to top the group, but you can never predict matches involving Turkey. They are such a volatile team. On their day, thy can defeat strong teams such as Germany. And on other days they will go down to teams like Latvia and Armenia. BTW, I am surprised that Belarus is taking part in the competition. They were banned by FIFA, because they were seen as too "close" to Russia. I am glad that at least UEFA took the right decision here, by distancing sport from politics. They are placed in Group I, along with Switzerland, Israel, Romania, Kosovo and Andorra.

So, in about two weeks the qualification games will start. Since I'm from Croatia, I will follow my team more closely than others. Yesterday Croatia's manager Dalić said that he wants to keep the same team which won the bronze medal at the World Cup last year. The only real change is that Lovren said goodbye to the national team. We will see who will get to the starting lineup instead of him.

As for the games, Croatia is in the group D with Turkey, Wales, Latvia and Armenia. I dare to say that Croatia is the group's number 1 favorite. It will be interesting to see how will they play their first two games against Turkey and Wales. I see Turkey as second favorite in this group.

The French are in a better position if we look at the younger players. They have Kylian Mbappé (24), Ousmane Dembélé (25), Randal Kolo Muani (24), Marcus Thuram (25), Ibrahima Konaté (23) and Aurélien Tchouaméni (23). None of the other European teams have this many talented younger players. And in case of France, they have an ideal mix of young and experienced players, with Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris, Steve Mandanda and Karim Benzema comprising the second group. They will be one of the favorites to win Euro 2024, but let's see how it works out for them in the end.

This is the reason I like Euro tournament more than the World Cup. There is much bigger concentration of good teams and there is never a strong favorite. Looking at the French players that you mentioned someone would say that they are a strong favorite. But there are other European nations that can beat France. Even Croatia who is never a strong favorite to win a title in Euro or World Cup managed to beat France.

I don't think that failing to qualify for the last World Cup says anything about their chances for the upcoming Uefa Euro 2024. There are a couple of examples where one tournament was a disaster even during the qualification and then the tournament afterwards the team performed very well. I would have to look it up but I remember that those situations have happened before.

The Nations League is a bad predictor for the future performance. The Nations League is often used to test players, usually nobody takes it as serious as the World Cup and the Euro and I agree with that. The Nations League is often boring to watch.

I agree when you look at the whole competition called the Nations league. But this is final four and I'm sure that each of the four teams would love to bring home the gold medal. I know that for Modrić it will probably be the last tournament in the national team and I'm sure that he would like nothing more than bring home a gold medal.

As for Italy, yeah... Other teams also had disastrous results in the Euro competition and then played brilliantly at the World Cup. I'm just saying that Italy is not my favorite team to win the UEFA Euro 2024.

It's true that the Nations league is a less important competition compared to the World Cup and the EURO, but this is still the final tournament and everyone wants to win the trophy.
As for Italy, it is truly incredible that they failed to qualify for the World Cup twice in a row, but in the meantime became European champions.
It's obvious that Italy is facing a generational change and it is difficult to say how strong they will be at the next EURO 2024.
For me, the biggest favorites are France, England and Spain.
I think it can be said that the EURO is a better competition than the World Cup, without weak national teams in the final competition.

France is always seen as the favorite team on paper.  They were the team that made it to the final from the last world cup from the European continent.  Even if they are unlucky against Argentina, at least after seeing their efforts, my favorite for the European championship would be France.  Italy is also a strong European team.  We have to remember what they did in the last European championship.

Italy may be a strong team but I don't consider them a favorite to win the UEFA Euro 2024. After all, they didn't even qualify for the last World Cup. We will see how well will they perform at the Nations League final four in a couple of months. I think that they don't have what it takes to beat Spain in the semi final game.
