There is no disqualification for using the cage for the momentum. Anthony Pettis used the cage to knock down Benson Henderson and it was a crazy move and a highlight reel for a long time as he actually ran on the side of the cage and use that momentum and many fighters use cage to gain the momentum, like super man punch getting the momentum from the cage and it is common. You cannot hold the cage to prevent a take down or hold on to the cage and that is illegal but you can use the cage for the momentum and there is no restrictions on that.

Thanks for yet another answer to the question I've been asking a lot as someone still new to MMA and in UFC I haven't been able to find out for certain despite responses above.

Was sure someone here would be able to point me to the rules clarifying this but I guess it's different for UFC and other types of MMA? The allowed use of the cage for height momentum to me seems logical, great to know, feels like I need to watch more to understand why not more people use it!

Anyway, let's hope we get some all-the-way fights that get us some new cage scenes Wink

True eaLiTy. Thanks for that clarification on the rule in the UFC on cage usage where you just can't grab and hold.

If a fighter is on the ground they usually drag the fight from the center of the ring towards the cage so to have some way to stop their opponent from throwing wild punches.
They aren't allowed but the referee doesn't stop them when they are playing the ground game especially for those who are wrestling.

Ah so you actually aren't allowed to use the cage then, so even height or momentum advantage (say, for example, getting a leap off the cage for some momentum) using cage would be penalised?
Probably get a disqualification if it was done on purpose.
There have been matches where it was done before (not like a wrestling type move) but so fast that it would be taken by the referee as an accidental move and just have the fight go on.

Essentially the main focus was on the sparring session both fighters had and each of them stating they knocked down the other.
I watched the press conference and I see there is a lot of history between Ngannou - Gane and I was not aware of that.
Both of them can understand each other very well and I think they speak French language, they had more training camps together and they know each other well.
I think the winner will be the one with the right mind set, but this is must watch event nobody should miss if they love MMA.

Nobody is talking about co-main event Brandon Moreno vs Deiveson Figueiredo but this can be more interesting to watch than main event.
I see there is Khabib cousin Said Nurmagomedov fighting in this card against Cody Stamann, and Matt Frevola is fighting in prelims, so don't miss that.

Essentially the main focus was on the sparring session both fighters had and each of them stating they knocked down the other.

The main thing to take away from this press conference were the antics between Moreno and Figueiredo.
With one calling their opponent the bad guy and the other the hero of the match. Guess which one is which.

Ciryl Gane's manager released old sparring footage of Gane and Ngannou when they both trained together in france.

Ngannou said: why didn't you show the part of the sparring where I accidentally knocked you out with a left high kick.

Ngannou later apologized saying he should not be proud of it, since it was an accident.

...

Brandon Moreno was on the ultimate fighter, the year Henry Cejudo and Joseph Benavidez were coaches. Later Moreno trained with Henry Cejudo.

Figueiredo says Moreno betrayed Henry Cejudo when Moreno helped Joseph Benavidez prepare for his fight with Henry Cejudo.

Figueiredo says this while training at arizona combat sports which is Henry Cejudo and his brothers MMA gym.

...

Predictions

Francis Ngannou defeats Ciryl Gane via knockout/TKO

If Deiveson Figueiredo can get his weight cutting issues solved, I think he will beat Brandon Moreno.

Brandon Moreno has very good cardio, that is his strength which aligns with Figueiredo's weakness which is cutting weight and endurance.

But it is hard to say who has the advantage there since Figueiredo's weight cut was very bad for the 2nd fight.

Essentially the main focus was on the sparring session both fighters had and each of them stating they knocked down the other.
Gane said he does not remember since it was back in 2019 but Ngannou doesn't buy that excuse but does agree it was a gym where they were not team.
It was all just to create hype and something to talk about in this fight since they do not have any rivalry really going on.
Francis and Jones does.

With one calling their opponent the bad guy and the other the hero of the match. Guess which one is which.
Also Figueiredo complaining about Brandon always bringing out that boom box and blasting it all over the venue.
This to me was quite funny and they actually showed the Moreno camp doing this during the junket.
Ngannou did mention about his partnership with dapperlabs to bring in the NFT market to the UFC under their own brand called UFCStrike. So expect to see some advertisement of this new platform before and during the fight tomorrow.

I think it will be something to watch before the weigh-ins as everybody is saying it will be lit.

Get your thoughts in after watching on what you think will happen during the bouts for all cards.
Am liking a KO from Ngannou in my predictions when I throw down my bet for the main card.

I've heard different rumours. That Gane knockout down Ngannou with a body shot. Dont know whom should we believe. Ngannou boasting that he KOed Gane, or rumours. People often say they have knockout this and that guy in the sparing, because it is hard to refute that. I think that their coach is the only one who knows the truth. Honestly, hard to believe that he really KOed Gane, as in the leaked sparing video Gane looks better and his strikes are more accurate. I predict that Ngannou will get tired and it will be a win by decision ok TKO in late rounds by Gane.

UFC 270 happening this weekend for the first main event of the year with championship title on the line.
After all the hype videos came out early enough into the year showing the two sparring and Francis getting knocked out by Ciryl I wondered why they did
But then saw this article from one of the mma stories they ran:
https://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/33102899/ufc-270-one-gym-paris-launched-careers-francis-ngannou-ciryl-gane-coach-rift-made-rivals
The two practiced in the same gym in France so it was obvious they would be interacting with each other in those training days.
Here is what he had to say about the sparring bout with Ciryl during a press conference a few days ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Pj3UxLRNI

Then seeing the opposite posted on another site saying Francis knocking out Ciryl under the same circumstances:
https://www.mmamania.com/2022/1/19/22892434/ufc-270-francis-ngannou-reveals-accidentally-knockout-cyril-gane-sparring-espn-mma

This should be a main event we will not soon forget!

As for the other matches on the card here is the challenge to put in your picks:

But I am going to back Ngannou, as buwaytress has already mentioned, the hype is approaching so that should heighten the odds for Ciryl backers.

Gane already at 1.91, I'll probably trigger a bet when it's 2/1. Wish there were a limit order you could set on bets to place bets at desired odds... that would actually be a cool feature heh.

^^Just watched some bits of the video, and yeah, I can definitely get some enjoyment from most of the clips. It still feels a little bit different from the muay Thai I used to watch a lot in my youth, but maybe everything just looks better up close, with that damn eerie music playing during the fights. Sight and smell do a lot for the game.

Missing (I feel) from all the clips are aerial battles, which leads me to ask/wonder if opponents are allowed to use the cage to leverage?

Looking forward to more UFC enjoyment this year =)

@Welsh I do also like the odds for Gane. He is not someone to underestimate in this fight and potentially take it the distance.

@Welsh you've sold me, I'm going to look for a 2/1 odds to take him on though, so hoping the Ngannou hype builds up to 23rd.

In any case, let me draw inspiration from some of my favorite boxers, such as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and others, who all dominated the globe with their powerful hands. I don't want to get into specifics, but I believe Francies will knock Ciryl out in the third round.
Never saw them in person but I personally loved watching muay Thai in my youth, and my favourite fights were shorter fist-heavy fighters (in a sport where boxing is probably the least-favoured method) taking on barrage of kicks and elbows to close in and submit with fists.

We're sick of seeing MMA fighters walk over to the boxing ring to fight under boxing rules; it's past time for boxers to go over to the cage and fight under MMA regulations as well.

+1

P.S. Funny video of the week for me. Forwarded by my kid. Heh.

Gane at around the 1.90 odds is an absolute steal. I honestly thought he would've been a 1.50/1.60 favourite going into this fight. If you think about it, Ngannou is definitely a scary opponent, but really all he should have over Gane is his power.

We could see a fight between WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Nagannou after the Jan 22 bout, according to Francies Nagannou, who is ready to accept Fury's challenge. It's over the social media do you have any idea?
Francis knows he won't be able to beat Tyson Fury in a boxing match 9 times out of 10. So, he's proposed MMA rules, but with boxing gloves which pretty much means it'll never happen. I do want to see them in the ring together, and who knows Fury might be wild enough to want to get into the cage, which would be interesting. Realistically though, I don't see it happening.

Did you miss the end of Francies' tweet? Champ stated that he is willing to face Fury in any condition, with or without gloves, in the ring or in the cage! Tyson Fury has remained mute because man must be terrified to death.

Gane Ciryl's numbers are ridiculously absurd, yet statistics do not always matter. I still believe in Ngannuo; it will not be easy, but he will be crowned King on January 22. He's the type of fighter who catches you off guard and knocks the wind out of you, which is why he's the world champion.
As the fight comes closer we are getting more and more videos coming out which brings up those very same questions you just posed.
Ciryl fought Derrick Lewis as most would know him for his other name: The Black Beast and took him down.
We are talking about the crowned knockout king from the last UFC event.

Ngannuo is the type of fighter who doesn't let losses get into his head or wins get into his heart; he takes fight after fight. Ciryl is quite good with his leg and head work, but Ngannaou's major upsets come from his power hand.

The year is coming to a close for the UFC, so they have released a best comebacks of the year compilation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnuh12X-Puw
Since there is nothing until the next event in a couple of weeks. So might as well enjoy these high energy bouts which were ones to remember.
Merab and Charles Oliveirer's comebacks were incredible, but if I had to choose, I'd vote for Merab since he absorbed those early punches and came back like a legend to win the game.
