Having a friend that has his life changed dramatically from average lifestyle to wealthy one is what encourages me to invest in cryptocurrencies. And what's making it even great is that he is not actually spending any little amount of money investing in crypto as he is just a bounty hunter.
Aside from buying Bitcoin and holding onto them, I also buy alternative coins because alts do have potential just like Bitcoin. Bitcoin has its own purpose and so as other coins. But I don't just buy them, I study them first and assess if it is really worth to invest in.
One of the things I look at when planning to invest in a coin is the usage of such coins, which is the product that accompany the project, the next thing is the activeness of the developing team. To be sure the won't abandon the project halfway.
Aside from the team and their project, I also tend to look for the project's integrated benefits. I look for projects that benefits a wide range of audience and isn't focused on a certain group of people or a certain location only. Real world application is also a factor as well as the duration of the usage.

That way i could know whether the project is good or not and also i look on what kind of project they are doing because there are a lot of projects that are almost the same. This choice is random because coins can take off instantly and fall as quickly and you need to make some decisions at this time 
Usually, there are many potential altcoins nowadays, that is why I'm confident in investing altcoins. In fact, there are many promising projects out there. However, altcoin price is difficult to predict but I know potential coin will become successful someday.

It's the same reason why so many people also invest in altcoins which is none other than profits. I really believe that those who buy those altcoins did not really exactly know what their coins do and they only know that it is hot on the market and it has potential to surge and that also encourages them to invest in a specific altcoin.
if you want to buy a new coin then you have to carefully study this project and technology developed by this project. If the technology is interesting and could benefit society and the coin which they develop will also increase the price and attract large investors

And if you want to invest in a token in the market, here I think it's best to study all of its threads and every trace of it. You should check out the use case, the team, advisors and the community that is backing the coin before buying it. Also its a good idea to read the whitepaper, usually you can get an idea from the whitepaper if the team is serious and professional or not.
The idea behind the coin, the usefulness of the coin, the community supporting the coin and the capacity, skills of the developers behind the coin! I also like to see the technical value of such coin and the work that has been done in the past!
