I have been wondering the reason people go into prostitution, some people will say it is because of poverty,  well am not quoting them wrong but I think there are other things that can actually lead people to prostitution aside poverty. I have come to discover that rejection can actually lead people prostitution, some people have never felt loved accepted even by their own parents, no one have ever hug them or even clean their tears, they show love but are not loved back. This can lead them to prostitution. What do you think is the reason
i have seen cases of girls from wealthy homes going into prostitution, could poverty be the cause of this? some girls go into prostitution for the sake of greed and the willingness to belong to a social class that her current status doesnt befit, in order to measure up, she engages in prostitution. On a personal note, i dont think any reason is reasonable enough to engage in prostitution.

The main reason is that they are driven by high needs and prestige because their friends have luxury goods. That's my opinion.

The more horrifying are those who come with innocence and then are traded and used by others. yes, human trafficking. Some of those who plunged into the world of prostitution were to fulfill a luxurious lifestyle.

Prostitution, like it is generally known, is as old as the world itself and what was once a thing of shame, is now practiced in the full glare of the public.
Some women have even glamorized the trade and some see it as a very lucrative, especially those that manage to travel out of the country to engage in prostitution.

But there are reasons why some ladies take to it and most of the reasons may not just be far from the realities in the country.

Pulse List brings you top 10 reasons Nigerian women go into prostitution.

1. Poverty

The first excuse that is given for the proliferation of prostitution has to be poverty, especially if the lady comes from a poverty stricken background.
Young ladies whose parents are incapable of taking care of them and their siblings, tend to go into prostitution so as to make ends meet and take care of their families.

2. Unemployment

It is not every prostitute that is lazy or just willing to sell herself for money. Some of them go into it because there are no jobs for them to do to take care of their needs.
Some of them are well educated but with no job readily available for them to do, they decide to sell themselves for money.

3. Peer Pressure

This is another reason ladies go into the trade of prostitution. Some of the ladies involved are often pressurized into the trade because their friends are into it and they do not let them know the dangers involved in it, only the glamorous part of it.
And before they get to know the dangerous repercussions, they are neck deep into it and find it difficult to get out.

4. Laziness

Some ladies are naturally lazy and expect a man to cater for every of their needs. They want to live the high life, buy high-end clothes, travel around the world and live life to a hilt but they are not willing to work hard for the lifestyle.
So they feel the best way to enjoy both worlds is to become a prostitute.

5. Sexual Addiction

For many, this reason may not be strong enough but research has shown that some ladies go into prostitution because they have a high sexual libido and it is often very difficult for one man to satisfy them sexually.
So they feel the best thing to do is to go into prostitution where they will get an array of men every day to have sex with them.

6. Lack of Parental Care

Some parents do not care about what happens to their children, neither do they feel it is their duty to give them the right guidance as they are growing up.
Such children usually end up getting advice from friends and most times, these advice turn out to be poor.
Children who are from broken homes, with no one to lead them on the right path, are often open to such temptations and they usually fall into the wrong hands.

7. Heartbreak

Believe it or not, a lady who is heartbroken may be tempted to take vengeance on men by becoming a prostitute.
These ladies have very fragile hearts and if a man they love so much breaks their hearts, they feel the urge to take revenge by sleeping with other men, with the wrong notion that they are hurting the man who hurt them too.

8. Money

The overriding reason for women engaging in prostitution is the money they can make from the trade.
In an economy that there are so many uncertainties due to the harsh climate, sex still sells and the ladies reckon that they will always make ends meet if they sell themselves.

9. Victims of Rape and Trafficking

Some of the commercial sex workers we have in Nigeria today are victims of sex slavery, rape, child labour and trafficking.
Those who are sexually abused or raped when they are young see nothing great, divine or important about sex.
Their conceptions about sex have been derailed due to their childhood experiences. Some have low-self esteem and other sexual disorders that later lead them into prostitution.
Some young ones are forced and forced into sex slavery, pornography and prostitution.

10. Loneliness

Loneliness is another reason that can push women into prostitution, believe it or not. A woman who has been abandoned by a man can feel desolate and to prove she is wanted by men, decides to go into prostitution.
It's interesting that all of these points refer to something bad. I think it is quite a comprehensive list, but is it really impossible that a woman (or man) could just choose to be a prostitute? I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing. Don't you think though that it could be a decision that a person makes? Couldn't it be a career choice? There are other more "acceptable" professions where people use their body to provide a service for others. Massage therapists could be one example. The only point you have that could be interpreted as a little bit positive is "sex addiction", but even that sounds like an illness. What do you think?

There are lots of reason why a person choose to be a prostitute.First is poverty.Poverty can usually make a person drag to prostitution just to survived.Second is illegal recruitment. There are lots of cases that a person applied a job abroad or in motherland taught to get a decent job but in the end they are force to work as a prostitute.Third reason is physically and emotionally harassed person. Some people who experienced sexuall harassment may end up as a prostitute because mostly of sexually harassed people suffers of traumatic experience and do some actions like joining prostitution because of their mentality illness.

i think the main reason would be poverty, most of the time prostitutes don't have any other choice to earn money specially if you're from a poor family and wasn't able to study at all... other reason may be abuse from other people or even family members. But i think how to somehow help them is more of a proper thing to think of rather than why do they enter such industry.

There are many reasons why people go into prostitution. Some possible reasons are:
1) Being physically abused as a child
2) Being sexually abused as a child
3) Being involved in drugs
4) Prostitution isn't always a choice though. Sometimes people go into prostitution due to being forced.
5) Sex work also be a lucrative business depending where you are from. Those are not academically capable may choose such a practice as a means to make more money.
So despite the sexual drive, the main reason for prostitution in all groups is money.

While there are many negative reasons for people to become prostitutes, I think there actually are some different cases. In some places prostitution is completely legal. I have never actually talked to a prostitute, but according to some reports there are prostitutes who just choose it as a profession. In places like the Netherlands prostitution is legal and highly regulated. This can make it a safer profession for people than in places where it is not regulated. I read about two twins who are the oldest prostitutes in the world. They have been doing it since the 60s and in their interview they seem happy. I think there are many reasons that a person may become a prostitute. Unfortunately, sometimes it is not the person's choice. There are big problems with human trafficking in many places in the world. I know that sometimes women are kidnapped in Eastern Europe and taken to work as prostitutes in Western Europe. They are sex slaves. They're "handlers" take their money and threaten to kill their families back home if they try to run. They also sometimes by the girls from their poor families. Drugs can definitely be another factor. If somebody needs more money to fuel a drug addiction, sometimes prostitution may seem like a quick solution.

Poverty, rejection are some of the reasons people go into prostitution but I also believe that there's more... Lack of support, moral upbringing, lost for material things, lack of contentment, sexual abuse and battering relationships can also be some reasons why people dive into prostitution. Though all these doesn't justify their actions yet it has placed beautiful souls in the streets at night.

Other than poverty, I believe their upbringing and their emotional state has a lot to do about why the went into prostitution. However, I watched in a TV program years ago, a documentary to be exact, one prostitute went into prostitution just because she loves sex. She was not poor. So I think that's one factor to consider, however I still think that poverty and emotional health are still the main factors.

For me, in a third world country, they resort to prostitution because this is a very simple way to get out of poverty.
This ain't happening on third world countries but this is one major problem of the world and even in the first world countries, they are dealing with this problem.

And some countries instead of dealing with this, they are letting their citizens get close to it and make it as one of their industries.

For me, in a third world country, they resort to prostitution because this is a very simple way to get out of poverty. They are paid with money that they never imagined they can receive their entire life. With this, they are motivated to just continue prostitution for the sake that they have food to eat.

I see a lot of reasons on this thread stating that poverty, frustration, sexual assault etc. are often the reasons behind getting into it. And where as I do agree, I also think that some people just want to make quick easy money (I also don't believe it really is easy money. I'm sure its a very ugly thing).
