I would say that bitcoin is the most popular since it was the first cryptomoney to appear and therefore it remains the standard and thus gives greater confidence to people, experts, traders, institutions, etc....
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency so that makes it the most popular. Since it is the first, its community is big and it is getting bigger as the time flies and it makes its value increase. Other cryptocurrency can't surpass bitcoin because of its very huge value.
