Many are counting on the big expansionof altcoyins in the future, because they bought them at a low price, or vice versa, bought at a high price, and wait for the price to return to the purchase price.
There are some people who really like the projects they invest in, because it makes sense to them. But most of them invest because of the great benefit of the crypto market, though it is risky. I also invest for profit haha 
I will example myself. Me I don't sell my tokens when they release it in exchanger. Because i do really believe that, that token will grow or the price will multiple to 2 or 3. And the other reason is I don't need the money that's why I choose to hold that token but unfortunately the price goes down. At the end of the day, I didn't get what I really want.
I think they hold altcoin because they believe that their price will grow 30-50 times. And then it will be a very good investment.
I think because many people understand that there are already a lot of big and rich people in Bitcoin who are most likely not to allow such a big volatility that they do not need anymore, that's why we, the very founders of crypto currency and the community, crypto, we go to altcoins, because that it is altcoins that can bring us money.

many are of the opinion that altcoyins are more promising and strong in terms of making a profit, and many of them are much cheaper than the same bitcoin.

Actually, most people love trading and holding on altcoins either for long term or for short term, because it is proven and tested.
In my opinion for why people holding altcoins its because they believe the that they will have a better future for this, example the bitcoin pr an ethereum, sometimes we encounter the berish but its okay, because of many people believe on it and people now a days have more knowledgable on cryptocurrencies, all of them or us expirienced also the bullrun which is ypur money became doubled or if. not atlis gain profit...
I think it is the opposite. People are holding altcoin for just a few days or even a second having those coins when they think that the market would go high. Thus, will let them decide and the main purpose for holding it because they would like to trade those altcoins. These people are usually experience and good on trading. They will get altcoins actually not for them to hold but for them to trade. In this way they could earn it through smart trading. This usually happen if that individual has already experience and prove already that is able to earn through it. If there are altcoin that needing or good for holding well those altcoins are established already and prove its worth in the market like ethereum and other top leading crypto.
It is possible for people to hold their Altcoins for reasons best known to them. Some Altcoins are potentially good as bitcoin, so holding Altcoins even in volatile market is not bad. However, not all Altcoins can stand the test of time, in fact some do not even have a working product....... such is not good to hodl.
