They have a lot of weapons and even more, a lot of media and a lot of dollars, in which the people worldwide (still) trust. This makes power.
you know why? why US the most powerful country in the world? not only because they are strong and always win the war. not only because they have nuclear weapons. not only because their technologies are explore and ahead to other strong countries, not only space explore, and have scientific military power. this is a biggest factor why they are most powerful country. they have a lot of secret society and agencies. like example CIA, FBI, NASA, so on and so fort etc. but the a amazing factor why they very strong is, the Jesuits of the US form one of the richest and the most powerful corporation the world ever saw. the Jesuits are only entrenched at the highest levels of all branches and departments of the US. Government, but they are also entrenched at the highest levels of virtually all the major companies and industries in the US. and also the Jesuits are the major stockholders of many of the largest corporations. they own 51% of the stock in bank of America. did you this?

Mainly because USA came late for the party during the world war 2 and collected the spoils. Since all the other nations are destroyed, the US "gave help" to the other nations and of course the nations will owe the US. Since the other nations don't have crap, what they could give is information. Information from them plus the german defectors' info and tech, the US became nation supreme. Of course you want to maintain that position over the others so they strong arm them.
U.S is powerful because they are feeding other countries especially from the middle east. Imagine the oil they are getting from the middle east
America is the biggest stakeholder of this world because they have huge nuclear warheads and have enough military, political and economic status. Also freedom of speech made this country great also. i think the biggest reason is education, because in world top ten universities list 8 are from USA. 
I guess economy is the biggest reason. Their GDP is close to $20 trillion and therefore they can afford to spend as much as $600 billion every year for defense purposes. Another important thing to remember here is that the USD is the reserve currency of the world. Therefore the Americans can get long term loans at very low interest rates.
US is getting actually less and less powerful every year which is passing, because the rest of the world is developing.
Probably already mentioned but that it avoided the devastation of WWII is a big plus. I don't know much about economics but the adoption of the dollar standard also helped afterwards.

If we are taking about the consequences of the war, then it was because of the fact that the mainland US is pretty much spared the damage of war. Now compare that to what happened in Europe. America was well-off by the end of the war that they can afford to fund the reconstruction of Europe. I believe that was called the Marshall Plan.
The colony in the Philippines was leveled but then again America left after defeating the Japanese so they don't have to see to its reconstruction.
Long story short, America benefited from technological advances invented in it (for example, the oil engine) and retained those advantages by keeping out of the war as long is it was possible to.
