If you consider cpu mining, you should consider the whole PC consumption, not just CPU.
Making a "traditional" desktop computer with a 4770K will cost more thant a GPU.

My rig with 5 280X perform @ 2300H/s
My dual xeon 2687w do ~740H/s with Wolf cpu miner and cost a lot more than the rig

DP xeons are really, really expensive compared to desktop CPUs. I don't know the most efficient recipe for a CPU mining rig, but that's certainly not it. Also consider power usage. The most power hungry CPUs are 130W, most are less. Every high end GPU is higher.

Any updated miners ? The GPU now seems to have a massive advantage over CPUs now on monero

Massive advantage how? Claymore reports 600 H/s on a 290x, which is about double what you get on a fast desktop CPU, but it also costs about twice as much. I see no major advantage to GPUs at this point, they are just another reasonable option.

A 280x do ~400H/s
If you are a miner, you surely have one or more rigs, with several GPUs on each.
Having multiple CPU is a bit more complicated/expensive.

It was only the wind.
4770k at stock clocks 250h/s at T-4
2600 non K at stock clocks 234 h/s at t-4

its nothing to do with a fan base, its at current the more powerful miner that supplys the highest output.

Nobody seems to be doing careful testing with complete environment data so we can't be sure, but there is a screen shot for this miner showing >300 on a 4770k. I have no idea if that is overclocked or anything else difficult to reproduce.

i dare say overclocked, or in linux which works better for cpu mineing from what i have gathered.

Yeah I don't really understand why Linux would be faster, and I can't come up with a good reason for it, but I never use Windows any more so it isn't something I'm going to work on.

Because the Windows kernel is retarded and won't take hints.

No, seriously. I can give the linux kernel a hint about how I'm going to be using the memory and how it should handle it. It is, of course, free to ignore me, but it usually doesn't, resulting in faster accesses.

The access pattern hints only matter for virtual memory that gets paged, which shouldn't happen. The prefill hint might matter, but only during warmup, after that they should be the same. The hugepage stuff should result in the same speed on Windows as Linux, if everything is working correctly, though I understand this is trickier to arrange on Windows. There might be other issues, such as how threading is being handled, I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure a good Windows programmer could fix this (as claymore appears to have done) but I'm not one by choice so I can't directly help.

Nope, because readahead. I'm using it for random access, and I tell the linux kernel that with madvise(). It can be mitigated, but not entirely fixed. The reason I haven't done it is because I don't want to boot into Windows to test.

Hello all,

Has anyone successfully compiled Wolfs cpuminer under centOS 6.4?

I tried for a couple hours yesterday to make it work, and even removed some of the values under the makefile but can't seem to get it to compile.

I'm stuck on this error..

./cpu-miner.c:1065: error: ‘MADV_HUGEPAGE’ undeclared (first use in this function)
./cpu-miner.c:1065: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
./cpu-miner.c:1065: error: for each function it appears in.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wolf0, I've ran folding at home using alinux VM before (virtual box) and it ran like native Linux on the CPU side of things.

you could make a prebuilt mining is image for windows users to mine with. Might get you some extra tips too
what do you think?

wolf, another quick question, I was trying to run the miner, while still doing some gpu mining , but when I do so, the % of good hash on the gpu miner starts to take a hit. I even tried just using 1 thread out of the 4 but it still degrades the gpu miner performance, any tips?

Hm... try lowering the priority of the CPU miner and/or raising the priority of the GPU miner in Task Manager. Whatever you do, do NOT use the "Realtime" setting - it always locked my systems up.

Figured it out, I had to set the affinity of processor to not steal from each other

wolf, looked for a help readme but could not find one..thanks for the info.

No problem... maybe I should include a readme or something.

readme would be helpful for the first time users, also the ones who are new to mining.

When writing the batch file to start the miner, how do you specify the number of core, like if I wanted to only use 2.

Thx

hey monero miners!

I'm new in mining, so today it's the first day that i mine monero,
the miner is running for 5 hours now, for me everything looks ok but i didn't get any moneros so far,
im mining with the latest miner of this forum (40-50 hashes) and i've typed in my monero adress
everything is in sync...

I don't know
So my question is how long does it take to get the mined moneros from the pool that i'm mining (extremehash)?

They have to find a block first, then that block must confirm. Only then will you be paid.

^It seems the Wolf's miner is faster on linux.

Yep! Went from 305H/s on Win7x64 to 440H/s on Ubuntu64.

Just looking at youtube videos on how to install Ubuntu - is it complicated to run the software on it or is it just like windows? Whats GPU mining like on it? Is it more stable etc. ?

There is no GPU mining under Linux for XMR/BCN/MNT

I give 200 XMR for open source GPU miner. Grin

Seriously? Because I *might* have one. Of course, it might also be near useless.

i hope ya serious. even i would donate you some XMR for a decent working gpu miner even thou i dont have much.

Nah.
