What would be really nice in terms of the simplewallet functionality is if there was a way to change your simplewallet password.  Is such a feature planned at all?

more unprofitable for the botnet dumpers.

Surely they are at 100% profit, others hashing doesnt affect that right?

It is a myth that botnets are 100% profit. It is well documented that botnet nodes have a market price. If mining brings in less than that, it is better to sell the node (or do something else with it).

Our primary concern though is creating the most secure and private coin and that means (among other things) decentralization of mining. If that includes botnets, well, we can't solve every problem in the world. As fluffypony said it can a relatively small part of the system, assuming a large number of users. But without users, none of this actually matters.

I think you can change your password when you recover from the mnemonic seed.

I'm having trouble with bitmonerod on Win7/64 - it hangs on initializing the P2P server. From bitmonerod.log:

Code:
2014-Dec-09 09:45:42.550851 bitmonero v0.8.8.6-release
2014-Dec-09 09:45:42.550851 Module folder: C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\bitmonero\bitmonerod.exe
2014-Dec-09 09:45:42.551851 Initializing P2P server...

It stayed like this for about 15 minutes before I gave up waiting. In this meanwhile, bitmonerod uses about 4 MB of RAM and has no CPU usage. Any clues?

Cheers for the new missives some steady progress and interesting new features.

I do wonder how many people will use the smart mining feature or how much of the network it would be if people were to use it. In my opinion even if most users ran it we could make up a few % of the network and make it more unprofitable for the botnet dumpers.

Yes, long-term with sufficient easy-to-use interfaces and enough network growth we can make botnets a relatively tiny part of the system.

Very nice missive. I have a couple of questions about the new version.

1) Should transaction fees for withdrawing from Polo be reduced soon (currently 0.1 XMR)?
2) Are there likely to be any problems with any of the unofficial GUI's? As far as I know they haven't been updated in the last 4 months.

Cheers, Q

withdraw fees are exchange-based so they can charge whatever they want unfortunately, I rather beta-test a new official xmr gui Cheesy

But what about that strange character?  AFAIK it's not Spanish and there is no way that I know of to reproduce it.  If that's the case my seed is useless.

Are wallet names case sensitive?  I guess I could try this later.

The strange characters are utf-8 issues, which we're working through. I'd imagine it's a latin character with an accent in the wordlist.

With the seed language: there's a command that will be merged to let you change the seed language, we'll make sure it's in 0.8.8.7 for you. In the interim, the worst case scenario is you lose your wallet files and you use your old 24-word seed to recover:)

Doomed to see the future and unable to prevent it
This Re-doubles my faith in Monero.

https://download.wpsoftware.net/bitcoin/wizardry/brs-arbitrary-output-sizes.txt

Unless I have read this incorrectly it is a simple addition to Cryptonote coins?

Not, not really, and whether or not it's a security improvement is questionable as it adds a new level of associative data to transactions (outputs are exponentially more likely to be smaller mixed in inputs than larger ones). At best you reduce bloat by a constant while introducing a property whose application to forensics is unknown.

Is there a rebute to this "possible" security issue that this purports to address. And when you say no you did not mean it would not be an "easy" integration?

There is no such issue. There are only around 100 possible coin sizes with the current denomination scheme (which could be reduced with something like a 1+2+5 system), so there is no issue with not being able to find matching output sizes for any reasonable non-dust amount.  I don't think they understood how denominations worked when they wrote that (are denominations in the cryptonote white paper?) or simply wanted to write a paper about an application of cryptography and didn't care.

Thanks Guys, it's great that your always here to set things straight. Smiley
