Where's saddam? and long time since tacotime posted here

saddam went off to a camp somewhere, maybe. I can neither confirm nor deny.

Thanks for noticing.  Grin

I have been taking a little time off from the forums to learn some new things. It's good to take a break from this place every now and then for your own sanity.

I see that luigi contributed a dump spend key command to simplewallet, nice!

Hi friends!

Where is Fluffypony? Has his bitcointalk account been recovered after known social ingeneering attack onto bitcointalk?

Also I am confused about http://getmonero.org - it was not attacked, but latest news are dated "March 30"...

Forgot to add - my travels have disrupted the Missive schedule, but we're trying to get everything back on track now:)

Can confirm I'm back, see GPG signed message below (my GPG key is in the Monero source tree):

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

This is to confirm I have recovered my Bitcointalk account.

Also we've had awesome and successful Monero meetups in Brussels, Paris, and Berlin. Tomorrow I talk in Berlin again at the Bitcoin meetup (but this time on the subject of OpenAlias), and then on the weekend I am presenting on Monero at Bitcoinference in Amsterdam.

Hopefully after that things go back to normal:)

So, does anyone still want to keep using this forum? Even after "alts" were downgraded to bellow Română?
No problem... I just want shitcoin announcements. I mine them and I won 1-3 Monepoj a day.
If I put my processor and my graphics card to the task of mining directly Monero, I would only have 0.5.

You have to be careful about drive feezing, because if you go too cold, or run the drive for too long at cold then the spindle bearings will be destroyed. The bearings may damage the platter surfaces if they emit any particles or gelled lubricant while running cold, which would dramatically decrease the chances of data recovery by any paid service.
His failed drive is an SSD.

Yeah... you should microwave those for a little while to fix them.

The oven itself must be upside-down, and placed inside a freezer for some time before and while it's working. A popular saying also says "Not too long though, or it could damage it".

I've heard that a quick 10 s dip in liquid N2 followed by a 10-15 min soak in boiling water can do the trick too...

Nobody answered a question so far, so I will ask again: how do you back up your mymonero wallet?
Apparently, there is a .keys file, but where is it?
Since I am not a developer and/or programmer, some relatively easy path for a "common" web user would be much appreciated.
For example, bitcoin web wallet (blockchain.info) gives you easy means to download the wallet backup file.
Thanks.

You can also go to Account -> Account Details and save your view key and spend key. This will ensure you can recover your wallet if MyMonero.com ever goes down.

Thanks. I guess I just misunderstood this post:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.11422202

That post was directed at people using simplewallet or one of the GUIs based on simplewallet.

blockchain.info works differently. They store your private keys on their server encrypted with your password. Mymonero does not store your spend key at all anywhere. Your spend key is exactly your login seed words. Write those down and you are backed up. It also follows from this that you shouldn't let those seed out of your control in any way. That includes being careful who (or what cameras) can see your screen.

Of course 13 words is probably better [lowtech] solution.
Re cameras-thanks
one can envision a drone in 3-5 years going around and peering into windows trying to get a screen shot  Sad

Where did you hear that? Just saving the 13 word seed is sufficient to back up your account.

Is there a current list of Monero exchanges somewhere?

https://getmonero.org/getting-started/merchants lists only poloniex, bittrex and melotic. (Never heard about the last one, and it seems to be broken as well...)

it seems our ghost non-community member run site monero.org has a full list

http://monero.org/services/exchange/

this is a list as well:

https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/monero/trading_exchanges

I have no idea which one of those work. But from those lists, and from my own googling,

https://bter.com/trade/xmr_btc
https://hitbtc.com/terminal/XMRBTC
bittrex
shapeshift
poloniex

I wonder if /r/monero-markets guy has a good list going.

Melotic has dropped crypto's
