I have spent a few Monero in the last few weeks.

Honestly it was quicker and easier than bitcoin.

Maybe the seller respected the payment method more or something.

XMR has been faster and more economical (by wide margins) than BTC for quite a while.  I use XMR.to if I must pay out BTC.

Im glad Ive had a large position in ETH and some defi coins, but moneros price action has been disastrous. Its also an older coin and they usually dont do as well as the newer stuff. But, this is monero, not your typical coin. Which is puzzling why the price is so low for this long. When will it break out?

Can you please suggest a safe decentralized exchange where I could sell/buy my Monero for other cryptocurrency ?

The closest to be decentralised exchange is BisQ. https://bisq.network/getting-started/  But there is zero logic not use centralised exchanges if they are reputable. Yes there is a risk. But if you send coins, exchange and withdraw. There is very small time frame that something goes wrong.
There are plenty exchanges to trade Monero to crypto. TradeOgre, Binance, Poloniex., ...
There are much lees exchanges offering fiat pairs.

Didn't find any other thread where I can ask about my problem.
I am not so familiar with Linux but learning every day.

I have installed the GUI Wallet in Ubuntu 20.04 and verify the download. A double-click on it doesn't start the GUI. So I compiled the GUI from source according to this tutorial: https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui#installing-the-monero-gui-from-a-package
I did everything which stands there. Point 4 says "The executable can be found in the build/release/bin folder."

Quote
  4. Build

    make release -j4

    * 4 - number of CPU threads to use
    * Add CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH enviroment variable to set a custom Qt install directory, e.g. CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=$HOME/Qt/5.9.7/gcc_64 make release -j4

The executable can be found in the build/release/bin folder.
https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui#installing-the-monero-gui-from-a-package

But there is no executable file (at least I don't recognise anything there). What do I have to type in the terminal for starting the wallet?

FUD about how no government will allow Monero and how all exchanges will delist it is so string that even legal opinion of 100 years law firm that made IPO for Amazon couldn't break it. I wonder if Comptroller of the currencies can.

https://www.occ.gov/news-issuances/news-releases/2021/nr-occ-2021-2a.pdf

National banks and Federal savings associations (collectively referred to as "banks") may use new technologies, including INVNs and related stablecoins, to perform bank-permissible functions

... cryptocurrencies can present risks under AML and countering the financing of terrorism ... because cryptocurrencies may be used by bad actors for the purposes of avoiding the financial system or engaging in other illicit activities. However, banks have significant experience with developing BSA/AML compliance programs to assure compliance

Governments will do anything to keep crypto on centralised exchanges where they have some influence on the exchange. If all crypto gets exchanged thought atomic swaps they lose allot of power.
