@Stryfe, I understand your question, it's a legit one, the way you asked it was not perfect IMO, hence the replies you got  , but by all means, the question is pretty legit.

Let me give you a different answer, running a solo pool is not profitable, the proof is even antpool stopped their solo pool last year, who else would we trust ? the only alternative I can think of would be bsod.pw, i had a few (none btc) blocks that were paid, sadly no BTC block was ever found by them, so hard to know if their BTC solo even works, the other options are pretty hard to trust.

Mining solo is risky, the pool can lie to you about anything, it would be hard to prove anything against them, so you need to trust the pool operator, for obvious reasons most of us trust CK, now regardless of how much BTC he owns, why would he run a losing business? no incentives to do that, if I was him, I would shut the pool down, but we suggested that maybe we can donate to keep the pool up and running and he agreed, so we actually pay to get a decent solo pool which is owned by a trusted person who will not steal the block and say oh sorry something went wrong, go figure.

This is more like supply and demand, if we had a better option, nobody would have bothered with the pool going offline, but since this is a great pool which we all love, we decided to keep it alive, so miners are happy and CK is happy, all good.

yes I understand the meaning of the word lol but quite often - more than not - donations usually lead to or result in benefits as well. Besides, I only asked. Never realized it would cause so much hostility.

Do you understand meaning of word donation? None of your questions is valid, simply because of "donation" word definition.


If anytime in future -ck comes here with something like "Membership upgrade", well, then these are valid questions, but this is not the case.
BTW ckpool is fully opensource, you can fork it now and start your own pool, if you think you can can fully pay the required resources from 2% of found block.

There are no direct benefits ($$/discounts/profits), except for the fact that the pool stays operational and we have a chance to hit a block. Now, with the new server, the pool is better than ever!

CK has stated plenty of times in the past that the servers used were getting old and that he was not even breaking even for the past several years. There is no reason for CK alone to bear the cost/burden when we all use the services. Base on this, and faced with the fact the pool was shutting down, all that could chipped in and donated.

I will state it one more time (already have at least half a dozen times) I do not have any issue with people donating to a pool.

I am simply asking why would they? Is there an incentive for them? do they get a lower fee? do they get part of the pool profits?

I am not being hateful or spiteful - but quite a few here are - telling me to shut up, calling me a troll etc etc.

again - was curious if there was some benefit to contributing or what not.

Again I have no issues - as for the renting of hash - it matters nothing to the pool does it? rented hash is the same as non-rented hash - the pool gets their cut when a block is found so rented hash is also to the pool operators benefit as much as it is to the benefit of those that rent it (well if a block is found, right?)

This is one of 2 reasons I pushed to help get a solo pool fund.

The other is at least ½ the hash is rented and ck gets zero for that.

Nicehash makes out along with mining rig rentals.

I would be willing to say they have earned more money from this pool then ck has .

if part of the cost is paying 3-5% to nicehash up front when you rent.  they donating a fraction to ck is only fair.

I think to answer Stryfe's question and to put the best construction on it we have to realize and admit that a solo pool is no longer profitable nor maintainable out of it's own resources.  But a solo pool is still very beneficial to the entire community.  We all should have a solo pool in our failover list.  Solo mining for the individual is very difficult these days so having access to this solo pool is very beneficial to all.

I ask for donations to any that want to pay them. In any amount they want to pay.

Ok, don't know where to start with all the replies! But first, think about a "pool" ... "solo-pool" isn't able to pay server fees and a little bit tip to -ck !!!   ... what you think ... shut down!  ... right! know, ... there are people (like me) who still like to have a chance to hit a block!!! Even if it's only one Block in about 1 : 1000 years   or 1:100 years  (depending on the climate!) .....    so, we donate some bucks to the pool!  (ok, i donate in the future, but also a lot in the past!) ... where is the problem about this??? Whe like a chance, better then none  peace

I'm the one that said that in one of my replies.  Isn't that what happened?  New, more powerful server in a new datacenter?  Sorry if that is not correct.

I'm also happy to see the solo pool will be staying for the foreseeable future.

again, when did I say I had a problem? I only asked why would they? In my own reasoning I think they should not - I was asking for reasons why they should. Again, no where do I say I have a problem with it.



I guess this is what I have never seen - I have never seen a pool that asks for donations - and in this case neither did CK.

sigh never mind. from the thread, the way I understood it was that if the servers were to be upgraded it would have to be at the expense of someone else other than CK - that was the way I understood it.

I was simply asking why would people pay to do so? I myself could not imagine doing it myself - So I wanted to simply know why others would - if that is too hard to answer (because all anyone has done is attack me for asking lol) then never mind.

from the beginning I said I had no qualms with anyone doing so - I simply did not understand it.

Where did it say that we had to pay to the update hardware?  are you just trolling?  im sure everybody here makes their own decisions and dont need someone to speak on our behalf.
-ck was going to shut down all pools.  us here who play lottery only wanted him to keep up solo, because maybe our current gear is not worth pointing to unlucky pools.  we all know our
risks, decide on our own, and send btc to whoever we want.

anyways what are you trying to get at? do you have a pool and want us to join it?  or do you want us to go to a certain pool?  are you trying to watch out for us? keep us safe?

Because they are free to make contributions if they want to.  It's all documented in the last 3 or 4 pages of this thread.

Why do Tax Payers in the US pay for football stadiums?  At least the folks here have the opportunity to decide for themselves on how they want to spend their money.

For me it is no different than pool owners/operators (or anyone else) asking for donations - except there was never an ask made.  This was grassroots to support a pool and programmer who has done a lot for miners.  

There was never an expectation or ask - just a collection of funds from supporters of a pool.

oh, do not get me wrong - I am not saying anyone cannot do what they want.

but I have never seen a pool where the miners had to pay for upgrades to the servers, the pool operator usually does as they do get paid quite well when miners find blocks. so the pool operator is never "unpaid"

what business has it's customers pay for the upgrades? none, at least not directly - the customers may pay thru the fees or purchases but never directly. when you pay directly you become an investor vs a customer - so maybe now everyone who contributes will be an investor? and get returns on their investment outside of any mining reward they earn?

and yes we can all decide where we put our hash - I never said otherwise nor have I tried to directly make anyone point to anywhere.
