I'll think about it. Actually it's a little known fact that I run 4 servers for this pool, 1 main one that runs the pool and primary bitcoind, 1 backup bitcoind, and 2 equidistant spaced bitcoind servers across the globe (German and Hong Kong) in order to relay blocks to and from the server on the west coast of USA. Even if Matt's relaynetwork went down, I'd still be well placed for quick block changes/propagation.

i dont think anyone would complain if you raised your fee to .25 btc

it costs money to run a server.. and everyone should know that.

Well I never thought I'd say this but even I'm feeling the new diff and it's only going to get worse from here on 

I was hoping for this pool to make more blocks to justify upgrading the server capabilities and performance but that's never going to happen at this rate.

Well, there where two interuptions in the connection for about one second duration.
Cgminer reconnected directly, looks like a "normal" connection loss from europe to usa.
That I see mostly at this time.
I asked con a year ago about those connection loss and he helped me finding out this.
So, no problem at all.

About 5-10 minutes ago my stats page wouldn't load, it does now though .

I fully agree that the persons paying for the rental are going to take a pretty sizable financial loss.  However, it is not a complete loss (they'd still make *something* if and when the pool found blocks).  As the gear owner, I'm still getting paid regardless.  It's only the miners on the pool that get shafted.

As you correctly point out, PPLNS mitigates things, since risk is transferred to the miners.  Had I chosen a PPS pool, then it would be the pool operator that eats the losses.

On PPLNS if they do that, the person paying for the rental is expected to average a sizeable loss also.

Their expected loss % of 25 BTC is their hash rate vs the whole pool.

So if the pool was 2PH (as it is now when we just found a block ) if someone withholding with 5PH started mining on kano.is, they'd expect (of course) to find one block on average per Nd share diff they mine (currently 72.7 billion Diff shares)
For that block they get paid nothing (also no one else on the pool gets paid for that block)

However they are sending 5/7 of the pool hash rate to the pool, so they would actually expect to get 2/7 of their expected payout.
i.e. they'd mine 25BTC worth and expect on average get back 7.14 BTC (a 17.86 BTC loss on average) from their cost to mine - getting that when someone else on the pool finds blocks.
Of course they could be lucky and find more blocks than they expect ... and not get those payouts also
or they could be unlucky and have to spend a lot more than 25 BTC for each block they find and withhold.

They have plenty to gain from it, and nothing to lose.  Let's say I am a malicious user and have written software to withhold any block solving shares.  Let's also assume I own 5PH/s of gear, which is only about 1% of the entire network.  Not a tiny amount of hashing power by any stretch.  I put my gear up for rent on any of the sites.

People start renting my gear and pointing it to this pool, for example.  They're hoping to hit a block.  Well, because of my hack, they'll never hit that block.  However, I will still get paid for the rental.

Now let's say you don't like somebody's pool.  We'll pick on kano's pool here (no offense at all to kano, it's just an example).  You know that my gear has the block withholding exploit in it, so you rent my gear and point it right at kano's pool.  Everybody on his pool is all kinds of excited that 5PH/s just showed up and is looking forward to the payouts.  Uh-oh... no new blocks are found by my gear.  However, blocks are still found by the existing hash on his pool.  So... everyone there complains that the pool is unlucky.  I don't really care because you rented my gear and I'm still getting paid.  Heck, even you will get paid for any blocks the pool finds.  Win for me, win for you, loss for everyone else on kano's pool.
