Ethereum is already well-established so a no brainer to buy and hold. NEO is growing fast also and should have a bright future ahead so makes sense to hold it too. Just split your funds between both of these.
I think better split money between 2 coins. Both has good potential and similar technology so it difficult to choose one.
Buy NEO 
You can hold both of them at the same time, 50 percent each. That way, you won't miss any opportunity.
for the long term I am more entrusting 2 ethereum than neo, for the classical reason ethereum will still continue to be one good and potent coin compared to the neo that is not yet believed to be a stable coin.
I'm going to divide my investments, 30% BTC, 30 %ETH, 30% NEo on binance and 10 % for very small projects that can make x100 if I get Lucky)
quality over quantity i would pick ethereum and if you see some recent shilling about ethereum you find some very wild speculation ... like reaching 5k by the end of 2018.. so who knows.
I would buy NEO because the price is less and gain probably will be better because people like low prices 
But this year the potential of ETH is huge to make the historical pump till the end of the year. So even in this case it's better to buy 1 ETH and 7.5 NEO

The simple answer to your question is: Both of them has huge potential and both of them belong to different blockchain but their aim is a same called smart contract. Better divide your investment into two part 50% in ETH and 50% in NEO.

Hey buddy, based on my idea, i would choose ETH, well i dont care about the other reasons, but think of the liquidity of investments, ETH is more widely used which can be traded to all currencies, and is more popular, and alot of tokens nowadays are ethereum based which make it more transact-able in all currencies, and a lot of trading platforms usually ETH can be traded well. I wont go too far on any reasons but it would defend upon you on how you manage your investment assets. Dividing the investment might be comfortable with you, but for me, i would choose ETH and BTC as my primary investment vehicle.
I respect other reasons, but i am just stating my own perspective on both currencies.

Both ETH and NEO are suitable for investment and retention. If we argue that we are now at the beginning of the development of technology of blockchain and projects associated with it, then of course we will see a high growth of these coins in the future. NEO is quite a promising coin, but I like ETH more, because its platform is 95% ICO, it should affect the price of the coin itself.
50 \ 50. I think that this will be the best strategy. Both coins are very strong and can show strong growth. I invested in both.
As for me i would rather hold 15NEO than to hold 2ETH. Though the market is still favoring Ethereum but i can see more potentials in NEO and i believe that it will grow in no distance time to take the lead with it contemporaries. For long term hold i prefer NEO to ETH.
Ethereum and Neo may be nice to share between the two to invest in each other's competitors. Blockchain technology will reach more investors by increasing its potential when it reaches large masses with more partners.

Eth has a very good position on the market and neo has a big potential for growth. Buying both currencies can give a very good profit in a long term.
I would get 1.5 ETH and 3 NEO in this case. Getting the majority from ETH is the best decission. NEO is something not stable in the eyes of me. ETH provided a working infrastructure to the project owners. That's a reason for me personally.
