Anyone have heard of this news? Pistons fire coach Monty Williams one season into record-setting $78.5 million contract.

Quote
The Detroit Pistons fired coach Monty Williams, the team announced Wednesday. The decision to part ways with Williams now reportedly came at the ownership level. Williams, who was hired last offseason on a then-unprecedented six-year, $78.5 million contract, lasted just one year in his new role with the Pistons. He went 14-68 in a disastrous season that included a 28-game losing streak.

And after just signing a huge contract, first year coach Monty Williams was fired as obviously, I think the expectations was not met by the Pistons and they went into a humiliating season. Williams credibility has been shattered again, he was once a great coach 2-3 seasons ago when he lead the Suns into the finals and then almost win the NBA trophy with a 2-0 lead against the Bucks only to have a meltdown. And after that it was all downhill for them and then the Suns fired him. And now this, just shows that basketball coaches doesn't have a job tenure and they are the first head to roll if a team went very bad.

IMO, we'll see news like this in the upcoming days. Every team is going to reform their roster and as well as their coaching staff.

Whatever is the management for each team think what's best for them, they'd do it even if it's going to take a revocation of a coach, a player or anyone in the organization a contract.

This is what's the ugly side of these franchises and company, they can revoke someone's contract at their own will when they're not satisfied. There's always that clause included in it.

If it's not profitable then they can just let it go, no players or coaches are safe as the managements will always aim for money, and with how the Piston performs last season it's a managements decision to revoke the contract to find a suitable person for a vacant position and hope that it will bring something decent to attract fans to buy tickets and thier merchandise.

As you said, we might see more news regarding to how teams will reform for the betterment of the franchise.

Maybe the first big player news of the offseason… Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Pascal Siakam is intending to return to Indiana and sign a 189.5 million dollar deal that will keep him in yellow for the next four years. I think this is a good move for Indiana and probably for Pascal personally, but I would’ve liked to see him sign with more of a contender.

Boston won the last game and became the champion. They played very well in the final series and deserved it to the end.

I was supporting Dallas but they did not play well at all in this final series and they lost.
After many years, the NBA Cup came to Boston again.
We watched beautiful and enjoyable games, I really enjoyed these games, I just think the final series was uncompetitive.

I agree with you. It was pretty clear at the time that the real series between the two best teams was Minnesota Timberwolves playing against the Denver Nuggets. I think Minnesota just ran out of gas in Dallas, otherwise the Finals would have had a different winner and a much more competitive series.

While everyone is continuing to talk about what happened about the last game for Dallas and Celtics. There goes the moves like this from the other teams and I think this is a good decision for the Indiana Pacers. Pascal Siakam will stay on them for another four more years with a whopping $189.5M deal - max contract as said in the report.

Pascal Siakam and the Indiana Pacers have come to an agreement on a four-year, $189.5 million max contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
[...]
"I'm so grateful and happy that I came in a place where you just feel so supported and you feel like you're needed, you feel like you matter," he told reporters. "And as a player, that's really all you can ask for."

Luka Doncic did all he can, people who keep calling him not doing his best are not realizing how much work load he gets on offense, which means his defense may lack a bit. Warriors kept Curry not defending anyone for many years while they won all those rings, so it's understandable.

Dallas needs to get some amazing defender to help both Kyrie and Luka, because it feels like that is what they are missing right now, if they had some amazing defender then they wouldn't have all of these issues. In the end, we are seeing them doing whatever they can and that is a good thing, they were at the finals. Boston winning in 08 and 24 is also a great meme these days, it's such a big Kobe hate thing and funny to see as well, if Kobe was still alive he would have laughed but be annoyed as well.

It's the overall system that they need to change, not to bash Kyrie, but he was so inconsistent not just in this series, but all throughout the playoff and it was all Luka that carries the team to the finals. And then PJ Washington disappeared in the finals, it's understandable that he played defense, but his long three's are not here in the series and he looks soft against Boston. While in the series against the Wolves, he has the fire in him, tenacity and even flexing his muscles like Lebron.

Probably a good role players who can shoot three's like Paxson and Steve Kerr like player. And they have like a lot of forward/guards that didn't contribute that much, like Exum, Hardaway and Josh Green.

It was a completely deserved victory for Boston Celtics. I have nothing to say against that. I just got disappointed by the way Dallas Mavericks played the final series. They just can't get good contribution from all the players. Doncic and Irving can carry this team until a certain point. After that it is all about teamwork to win. I thought they would be competitive and even go for the championship. Boston Celtics became champions after 16 years which is extra special for them.  Smiley

Not only does Horford deserves the championship, but everyone in the team. Brown and Tatum have spent so many playoff games without getting into the Finals and now they actually made a good job seizing the opportunity as they stepped foot in the finals finally.
I believe Luka will have his time soon, but I'm not just sure if it's together with Kyrie again, but this whole Dallas squad is young and promising. If they can stick to that team in the next 2-3 years they'll probably get a championship within that time frame.

Kyrie experienced will help Dallas to become a better team. It just Boston is a better team this season since Dallas starter is still not well experienced compared to Boston which you can be considered an all star team with KP and Holiday addition in the roster.

Dallas just needs to develop their young roster since they have a potential to excel. They are just lack of experience when dealing with hot team with momentum. They are already missing lots of shots to answer the opponent aggression and committed turnover that’s why they are always being left behind by Boston on 1st to 3rd quarter.

They are just answering back when the lead is already huge.
True. I fully agree with that and it's actually affecting their performance already as we saw in the playoffs especially that series against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The leadership of Kyrie Irving floated that everybody could see how much he also changed.

But it cannot always be Luka and him, you are right they need to develop more but I think what they really lack is good chemistry, especially with Luka handling the ball most of the time. They cannot just wait on the corner or somewhere outside. They need to keep on moving on both ends of the floor and pray that their chemistry will show up.
Still, Jason Kidd did a great job at putting the Mavs in that position. I think he is the best coach for the star duo who plays almost like him handling the ball and looking for the open man.

I guess the first piece of postseason news is out there as Al Horford has decided to run it back another year with the Boston Celtics instead of retiring, which many believed he would have done had they not won it all. I’m happy for Al Horford, but I’m surprised he still gets minutes and makes an impact at his age and with his play style.

If the Celtics had failed to win the title, he would probably have been thinking about ending his career because he is 37 years old, and not at his prime anymore. Overall, I also think Horford deserved it. It's worth noting that he performed well in the final series vs. the Warriors in '22, and it's nice to see that he still managed to get the ring at the second attempt.

Correct, actually it was used to be Smart and Brown and Tatum, but it seems that the 3 is not clicking and Smart wanted to be out of Boston after so many failed attempts, like going into the Finals against the Warriors and then just last season, losing in the East finals.

For the Mavs, Luka is still very young and there could have been criticism of him like too much complaining in he didn't get the foul instead of focusing the game. Perhaps they can also make a move and look for another player that might help them.

And to add, Luka and Kyrie should also be back for the next season, and throughout NBA's history, including Boston's Tatum/Brown, they didn't win the championship on their first try, they were eliminated last year and then lost the finals in 2022.

My point is that not even Michael Jordan won in his first attempt, and it took him years to go over the Detroit Pistons before winning with a good roster that includes Scottie Pippen and other great role players.

They have been in the finals before, but fall short to the Warriors. Celtics just got better when they acquired KP and Holiday, and now with this healthy team, they might win a back to back championship, that should be the goal next season.

I believe Luka will have his time soon, but I'm not just sure if it's together with Kyrie again, but this whole Dallas squad is young and promising. If they can stick to that team in the next 2-3 years they'll probably get a championship within that time frame.
I think Dallas can improve, they just need to fill some role players and they are good to go again. Luka si so talented, there's nothing to improve in his game, the problem is Irving because sometimes he is not consistent with his shooting, just like  in the Finals where he heavily struggle on the road.

Congratulations to the Celtics, they deserved to be champions as the best team in the league. Tatum responded to all the criticism. He also mocked the media for making the Mavericks the favorite. Brown answered the haters with a ring and FMVP after the dunk contest. If this team keeps this roster, they will be the strongest contender next year. We haven't seen back-to-back championships in a long time, the Celtics can do it. I think that's why Horford is staying for another year, it's hard to let go of a team like this.
I agree with you, they can do it again because they are still young and you can see that they have a good chemistry. Hopefully Tatum and Brown's chemistry will remain the same, they should not compete with each other and instead just keep playing for the benefit of the team. Finals MVP is not so big like achieving a championship and people would easily remember a player if they are champions. For Tatum, maybe it's not his year but if they'll win another championship, maybe he'll get the FMVP and that should made him fulfilled if he isn't fullfilled now.

Horford, man, this guy is just old in numbers but he is playing like a young player, he is smart and knows how to give qualiity minutes that's why I can say that he had a big contribution to that championship. This celtics is not only about one team, they played like a team that's why they are successful now, and Tatum has become a good passer, that's so deadly.

Yeah, they really make it sure that Al Horford be back again after being out for a season and then they traded, Robert Williams which is a huge players for them in the center slot, but him being injury prone is one factor. And then also their defensive specialist in Grant Williams and Marcus Smart, tough decision, but Brad Stevens did a great job getting KP and then Holiday. Now, it's just a question on whether the Celtics can make it another run here. Just like when the Warriors won their first NBA ring, we never thought that they will be a dynasty winning 4 rings, but now the Celtics have that possibility to make it again and become the next dynasty in the 2020's.
