Commissioner Adam Silver speaks about the current state of the league just one hour ago.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2885395-adam-silver-says-he-does-not-expect-decision-on-resuming-nba-season-before-may

He said: Not to expect any decision in the month of april. Undecided

Practically speaking, they need more information before making such difficult/important decision in this time of crisis.

With the growing number of people infected with Covid-19 in USA they are having a difficult time on what to do.
I think they are all in panic by now.
Better just stay at home first. This will end soon with the help of each person disciplined into not going out.

If I am in the Commissioner position, I may not have the power anymore to decide all this kind of things when seeing how fast the pandemic is spreading.
He should take a rest for now and maybe that way he could think of something else after this worldwide sickness.

Don't be sad that the NBA will might not resume its season, be sad of what is happening with the USA now, they are strong nation but they are heavily hit by the corona virus, china were able to contained the virus, US did not, and trump even speaking that China are under reporting the number of cases which is not anymore his business, he needs to find the cure, otherwise US will collapse soon.

Agreed.

Last week up to this day. US has twice the number of total coronavirus cases (366,614) to Spain (136,675) in a daily rate of 30,000 confirmed cases per day. That's terrifying number.

I hope in the next upcoming days the numbers won't continue to grow so everyone would go back to normal and so NBA as well as soon as possible when the number of cases per day aren't increasing.

I am sorry to say but I believe US handles it very poorly as their numbers has been pumping real hard.
Italy's number of cases has already slowed down but it seems US cases has been rapidly growing, I don't have a complete information on its cases on a day to day basis but what I noticed is that in 24 hours time, they already have thousands of new cases being reported. As of now, they have over 10,000 deaths and 19,000 recovered only of the total 366K cases, that does not look really good.

Right, this is expected though, I mean the situation in the US is getting worst everyday, with many cases of deaths and spread of the virus is not yet contained to a level wherein we can say that it is safe for everyone.

There are countries that are now extending the total country lock-down to up to end of April or beginning of May, specially those that are heavily affected. So it's really sad, all we can do is wait and be safe ourselves.

Not sure but I don't think there is  a rule like that, most likely the season will be cancelled and all the effort of the teams who are in the playoff spot will just be wasted, they will focus on the next start and will start all over again. That's my opinion only.

I know that's only your own opinion but restarting the whole season won't happen. Teams will not allow that and I don't think that is even considered. If ever the NBA suspension of games will be last until the end of the year (I hope not, that's a disaster for all of us), they can proceed where the season ends once they came back and finish the season. Make some adjustments on the 2020-21 season, just skip the next season or lessen the 82 games. It all depends on when the situation will back to normal.

Hopefully we can see a good progress next month.

Yeah they will protest but how they will continue the season? they will adjust the date? well for sure it will affect the season starting dates in the long run and might it compromise the health of the players if they push to play since playing continuously will be bad on players legs so its best really to cancel the season so that they can give a good competition next time.

although its unfortunate but its no one fault and there's a natural calamity happens so I think its a good ground to implement this decision.

Why can't we just cancel without proclaiming any champions? Maybe we can just simply say that there was no champions this season and call it an end? That would potentially be enough honestly because who really would agree on any champions at all right now, no matter who you pick and how you pick it there will be people who will be against it, and even though becoming a champion automatically would help financially to some teams, it would also not be welcomed all that much because they would know that they will be basically mercilessly mocked for it forever.

I think best case right now is cancelling the league, and saying there is no champions at all, there is no playoffs, there is nothing. Maybe they can do awards though, I know that wouldn't mean too much but MVP, MIP, COTY, DPOY and so forth could maybe happen, those are still viable.

The NBA season including playoffs + post-season activities + free agency lasted a whole year. NBA finals take place from last week May or the first week of June and end on the 2nd or 3rd week of June.

Why such a decision to officially end the season should be made quickly? Why it should be ended right away? It's just postponed and suspended but no need for a rush to decide to end it. We still have lots of months remaining this year. Even how worst we see the status today in the US, surely there will be changes in the upcoming months.

NBA can still continue the season but "obviously" not today or maybe in the next 2-3 months. If the situation stills the same in the 4th quarter of the year, then they will surely consider ending it officially. It will depend on the status. It's ok to start the next season delayed as it already happened before because of the NBA lockout. Therefore, the NBA can still push the current season, even in November, but again, it will depend on the status.

I don't know about the law though. Perhaps they will also need the help of the players association so that players could sign an agreement.
A lot of money will be at stake here. They don't want their own employer which is NBA to go bankrupt or else they will lose their own jobs as a basketball player.
The management would ask for cooperation and that would be very easy for all of them. This is all about cooperation and understanding, the players who are in contract can easily understand the situation. They knew it that no money is coming inside the association and they will be the first one to be hit by the effect of it. The contract can be adjusted and they might apply the common exception that in every rule, it can be applied.
As long as they are protected by law the players can agree in order to help the business, you are right since they are going to be affected if ever that this business collapsed so it's really up to how they will agree from the settlement and how it will gives fair judgement for both sides.
Cooperation is the best solution and not anything else, both parties should bring good desire to solve this concern.
It's a must for them likely an order that they have to follow and no objections should be applied. They only have the option to agree whatever terms that the management will ask them to agree. USA is the number 1 one to be the most affected in this crisis. I don't think that players will do think of the compensation or contracts, what they have to do is to do what they can to help whether it would be agreements, reliefs or anything that they can to make things lighter.

I have convinced myself that the NBA regular season and post season are CANCELLED. due to the rising number of infected people in the USA.

Just want to clarify something, what do you guys thinking? The whole NBA season will be just postponed or cancelled already? If the latter one hapoens, then who is gonna be the proclaimed champion? I am curious about this issue because recently I saw a post on FB (one of sport related pages out there) that if NBA failed to continue the season then they will go with the point system something like that thus Lakers will be the overall champion. Is it a rule? How true this is? Huh

I think it's too early to say that there is no chance to finish the season. In my opinion, there is still a chance that it will succeed.
However, if the coronavirus infection situation is getting worse, I'm afraid the only solution will be to cancel the results of the entire season.
You can't declare a champion if all games have not taken place, it would be unfair.
we are starting 2nd quarter of the year and not because the Corona Virus Infected is growing meaning it will not end because the Increasing numbers of infections are the outcome of massive Testing happening now so this will determine how many need to be cured and now many needs to be stayed in quarantine.

NBA will decide this at least on the 3rd or at least 4rth quarter of the year because they can play games more than a day just to cope with the needed Games to end the season rightful .

No, it doesn't work that way, it will be unprecedented not just on basketball but the whole of sporting worlds. Games need to be settled to declare as who is the champion. It might take months before we can see an NBA games or even years. But the point is that the champion need to earn it and not be awarded without any competition. So we might as well wait till the dust have settled on the US right now as they have been hit very hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Not an analyst but I agree with you the games needs to be settled before they'll be pronouncing the champion for this season, there should be games to resume after this corona before they will crown the new champ, though if there are talks regarding to this matter it will be a long discussions to discuss
in terms of any rules that they will recommend while there's no clear announcement.

No, that is not how it will work.
Perhaps you have read another April Fool's prediction.

They cannot just proclaim one champion base on something that easy.
It will be not fair for other teams who had tried their best just to get to that 8th spot for the playoffs and specially for the Bucks who had an outstanding season.
It cannot be just a lottery too since that will sound stupid.  Grin
We will need to wait for more details about this and they will also need the permission of other teams management on how it will be done.
Its nonsense to consider to have that kind of decision when it comes on selecting the champion and as said where teams would hardly oppose into that one.
Lakers for auto champion? For sure this would be a big debate and would surely be a mess up. This season been just postponed but theres no way it can be cancelled
but well, all things depend if this pandemic would be resolved earlier but if not then lets see on what would be their decision.

I think I have read that the league is talking more about what will they do if the league is suspended, it is much more leaning that way. So we might as well hear them announcing the suspension of the season. They suspended it at the middle of march but they don't expect that the virus will be worst by April, the US now leads the world for confirmed corona virus.

Anyway, it is much safer to suspend it anyway. They still have limited testing. There will be a lot of problems if they decided to continue even without the fans, and life is at risk. They will have lots of problems too when they decides to suspend it. Such as the dates for the next season and yup, financially. But If I were to choose, I'll choose the problems financially, they can earn it again, because lives can't be earned again.

yes it's too early but we know the situation in US, they have now the biggest number in the total people infected all over the world and it would be risky to resume the season knowing the virus was still not contained and there is no vaccine for the virus yet.

I guess we should not expect that it will resume, they've been lay off for already a month if I am not mistaken.
