It's now time for Kai to silence his critics, as he finds himself on a grand stage where everyone is watching. This presents his chance to demonstrate to the world that he deserves a spot in the NBA. Kai Sotto hasn't performed well in the last three tune-up games. If he manages to score at least 20 points here, I believe that would be a significant accomplishment for him. Particularly noteworthy would be if he plays an effective role in limiting KAT.

Unfortunately, when Kai is on the defensive end, Karl Anthony Towns is taking that advantage to eat the young guy alive on the paint. In the end, Coach Chot decided to sit him almost the entire game, unlike in those previous tune-up games where Kai was getting more minutes and that was a good decision for me. Having JuneMar Fajardo and AJ Edu as the center brings more effectiveness to both Gilas' offense and defense.

Looking at how the Gilas performed on that night, it wasn't bad overall, especially against the ranked 23rd Dominican Republic. We are not even down as much as over 10 to 20 points contrary to what the majority is expecting knowing Towns is really a big factor. He's even gone berserk in the second half attacking the paint mostly on his plays but still, Gilas is able to keep it up with the scoreboard.

Take note that, Jordan Clarkson even fouled out only at the 3rd but still, the locals were able to play close with the Dominicans.

Not sure if you watch the game Clarkson was fouled out in the last 4minutes or something of the game and not in the 3rd, but I like your comment about keeping the gap close by using both Edu and JFM but giving the kid less than 2 minutes? Not sure if that's the right calculation to complete the assessment if the player is fit to his position.

It's done and we don't have anything to bring it back. Hopefully, the coaching staff will find the best way to win on their next game,
almost but Dominican Republic survived.

My expectations were mistaken; naturally, he couldn't shine due to his limited minutes. Nevertheless, I comprehend why he was benched after being given some playing time – he didn't quite perform well enough, and he struggled to defend against KAT. Only JMF seemed to have some success in limiting KAT's performance, and Edu's assistance made things challenging for him. Different games might require distinct strategies, and if there isn't a dominant big man like KAT, Kai Sotto could potentially prove valuable.

I'm not familiar with Angola's lineup, but perhaps Kai would be better suited for the upcoming game.

What are your thoughts?

Doubt Kai will step up there are so many opportunity for him to do that but no result shown. Right now he's since on the bench and it seems he will not go back to the game. I doubt Kai can achieve his NBA dream since he can't dominate everywhere he plays and he's performance is really bad. He need to gain muscle since at his position he's so easily swipe out by more bigger center. Also it seems Kai's NBA's dream is over since he didn't play well on FIBA.

I've just watched a video on a sports blogger on Youtube that the Orlando Magic coach is watching closely Kai Sotto's performance in their first game in the FIBA World Cup. Obviously, that will be their key factor if they allow Kai to be signed for the team. Miami Heat Coach Eric Spoelstra too watch that game live to watch specifically how Kai will do and quoting he might give some push for his NBA dream if he will do some surprise.

But it doesn't go well as he's really nothing compared to the Dominican Republic's big man. How come against the big on the NBA?

Also it seems Kai's NBA's dream is over since he didn't play well on FIBA.

There are still 3 games to be played on our bracket. Kai should used those games to cover what he's lacking in their first game. That's the only chance and opportunity to show his skills and not on tune-up games. If he will be the same Kai Sotto against the Dominican Republic on their next game, I would say his NBA dream will be idle again for some years to come and it might not happened now.

Feel bad for Kai as he's getting pressured at a young age but his big dream requires big work in the first place so no reason to give up.

To be safe, betting on the handicap might be the right choice here. +10.5 seems reasonable, considering it's their first game and they have the energy and the crowd's support. The opponents are quite strong, so maybe we can compensate with our 3-point shooting, as it's difficult to penetrate the interior, especially with Town there. I guess no big man has a favorable matchup against Town; he's capable of dominating everyone.

It's +12.5 @1.78 for me and like you have said, the crowd would be a factor in this game. For me, we have a big chance of winning if Towns gives up the ball to his teammates and let them shoot in the corner as that would be the spot where his teammates are going to be open and hope our guards will be quick enough to recover to bother the shot, easily said than done but hope they can execute.

I think Kai could somehow bother Towns though not all the time but life in the middle would not be so easy for him if Kai and Edu were there defending him.

On another note, I came across an update about this game on Facebook. Speaking of the crowd and fans, it has been reported that 43,000 tickets have already been sold out. Imagine the enormity of the crowd at that game. The Dominican Republic is essentially playing against a home team, and although they might be the stronger team, the continuous support from the home crowd could potentially alter the dynamics of the game.

Here are the current odds for that particular game:

Moneyline:
Pilipinas 5.50
Dominican Republic 1.15
Spread: +10.5

Are you gonna take the moneyline or the spread?

Understandable though to see such a huge gap in the odds provided the Dominican Republic is a powerhouse team regardless if Karl Anthony Towns is there or not.
Aside from that, rankings play a big factor in odds distribution regardless if it's a host country or not. If someone will have to bet on our Gilas, it's not about the hue gap but rather to show support from the country.

I myself, understand the distance between Gilas and the Dominicans but no way I will support the latter for an obvious reason.

Though technically, performance is the key, I hope the expected big boost from the crowd will fuel the Gilas to play at their top level.

I think the size average isn't that much compared to the Philippines.

I have taken the +10 in this game. Watching this match is going to be enjoyable since it's our own team playing on their home court; thus, we need to support them. I haven't witnessed an upset yet; I thought Angola would be able to give Italy a competitive game, but they faltered in the 4th quarter, resulting in a loss by double digits. In this game, every quarter is crucial; if Gilas gets off to a good start, they also need to finish strong.

GOOD LUCK, GILAS PILIPINAS!

What do you think of the final 12 guys?

This is the best roster we have, and we need to utilize it. Honestly, I have a few doubts about whether we can really compete. I believe the coaching job will be more important in this game. However, it's a good thing that Coach Tim Cone is beside Coach Chot; maybe he will have a say sometimes, making the coaching even better.

The selected players are very athletic: Malonzo, Abando, and Thompson. These guys will bring good energy to the team. Malonzo could be like Gabe Norwood, who is strong defensively. Let's see his contribution.

I want to see the highlights of Abando, showcasing what he usually does with his team. There was a rumor that Abando might not be selected, so it's pleasant news that he was included in the final roster. I've been able to watch some videos on YouTube regarding Italy, and from what I've gathered, this team employs a strategy similar to the GSW, and some say it might even be better. All five players on the floor are good 3-point shooters; they move the ball rapidly and with confidence.

For our basketball enthusiasts, how do you think Gilas can overcome this system?

We need to focus with our defense and try to work with the offense, it will be tough but our squad have that capability just need to execute good plays and good chemistries inside the court, we can't measure what the national/gilas have until we witness them competing with strong opponents that they've got on their brackets.

My take on gilas is they have the pieces and they've got the talents, it's more on how the coach will use that and how he will manage to bring the right sets of players to compete.

With current system what Gilas have I bet they are way behind on Dominican republic. But still we don't know what will be the outcome this since the current players of Gilas is more talented than last year, so lets just see there if they are really ready yo face bigger opponent since if they could successfully shutdown KAT team then we can say that they have big chance to advance on next round. Tomorrow is exciting day so maybe will wait for few hours before placing my bet.

I think we need to carefully consider this, especially if we are betting a significant amount of money. We still have plenty of time, as the game will commence tomorrow evening. Thus, we can conduct our own research before risking our money. If we bet now, we might be basing our decision on emotions. Of course, we will support the Philippines no matter what. However, if we don't find any value or advantage, putting a small amount would be sufficient, I guess.

BTW, Gilas lost to Mexico by 7 points, 84-77, Jordan Clarkson didn't play as he was rested but Gilas management assured fans that he is okay and good to go on the weekend.

Not so disappointing, in fact, by the looks of it, it seemed like we could really beat Mexico if Clarkson was present.

If Clarkson had played, there would have been a big chance for us to win. However, all of that is just speculation, as Mexico would surely make adjustments if an NBA player were to play. Nonetheless, it was still a good game for them. At least in the last two losses, we didn't look so mismatched.

Perhaps, but it's still speculation. Regardless, as the FIBA World Cup is set to start tomorrow, what are your predictions? Specifically, the match between Gilas Pilipinas and the Dominican Republic.

The style has changed a lot, as most teams are now focused on 3-point shooting. So, we also need to follow suit. While our bigs may not be good 3-point shooters, we have guards who are capable. What we need is consistency, as we cannot win without it. Additionally, we have to be aggressive with our defense, as our opponents are skilled shooters. Just a split-second opening near the rim, and they would seize that opportunity.

Coach Chot has received a lot of criticism already, but he has not been replaced. It's the SBP's fault here.

If what i've read is true then we have the Filas Final 12.

According to Homer Sayson, which he wrote on Spin.Ph, below is the Gilas 12.

PG: Thompson, K. Ravena
SG: Clarkson, Pogoy, Perez
SF: Ramos, Malonzo, Abando
PF: Edu, Aguilar
C: Sotto, Fajardo

So, Kieffer is included in the final 12 and Newsome was cut which i think is fair because K. Ravena has the experience advantage over Newsome for the PG spot but either one of them is deserving to be included in the final roster, its just that Gilas only needs 12 players and players will be cut in the pool.

What do you think of the final 12 guys?

I believe the decision was fair and square. At least Abando was included, so it's his time to shine. Newsome is a good defender, I guess, but in terms of offense, he isn't that consistent. So, it's just right that he wasn't included in the lineup. As for Ray Parks, he can now focus on his love life with Zeinab. LOL.
